Tell McCain: All Americans should be treated equally.
Just how far is John McCain willing to take his vendetta against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans?
First McCain tried to derail a bill to protect LGBT people from violent hate crimes.
Now he’s so desperate to fight against equality for LGBT Americans that he’s announced that he will “without a doubt” help block the Senate from repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – the discriminatory law that prevents gay and lesbian Americans from serving in the military.
Last month, the U.S. House voted to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” and according to a recent CNN poll, 78% of Americans favor ending the discriminatory policy.
Fair-minded Americans know it doesn’t matter whether a soldier is lesbian, gay or straight. What matters is that a soldier gets the job done.
But John McCain and the radical right are increasing their anti-gay rhetoric just as the Senate prepares to vote on repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” once and for all. Your senators could determine the fate of this discriminatory policy – and we need your help to drown out these desperate attempts to block repeal.
Repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will make our country safer and stronger. More than 13,000 gay and lesbian members of the military have already been discharged under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” including more than 300 linguists, at least 60 of whom specialized in Arabic.
Given the current needs of the our military, which are already stretched thin and are facing serious problems in recruiting and retaining troops, it makes no sense to continue upholding a policy that keeps able-bodied Americans from serving.
But this discriminatory law doesn’t just hurt our military readiness and national security – it insults the dignity and equality of every lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender American.
This issue is about more than the military. It’s about basic fairness.
And when the man who could have been our president starts trying to score cheap political points using LGBT people as a whipping post, it’s time for every American who believes in basic fairness – whether you’re gay or straight – to take a stand.
Thank you for doing your part to end this discrimination once and for all.
