Urgent: stop McCain’s anti-gay campaign

Tell McCain: All Americans should be treated equally.

Just how far is John McCain willing to take his vendetta against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans?

First McCain tried to derail a bill to protect LGBT people from violent hate crimes.

Now he’s so desperate to fight against equality for LGBT Americans that he’s announced that he will “without a doubt” help block the Senate from repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – the discriminatory law that prevents gay and lesbian Americans from serving in the military.

Last month, the U.S. House voted to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” and according to a recent CNN poll, 78% of Americans favor ending the discriminatory policy.

Fair-minded Americans know it doesn’t matter whether a soldier is lesbian, gay or straight. What matters is that a soldier gets the job done.

But John McCain and the radical right are increasing their anti-gay rhetoric just as the Senate prepares to vote on repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” once and for all. Your senators could determine the fate of this discriminatory policy – and we need your help to drown out these desperate attempts to block repeal.

Repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will make our country safer and stronger. More than 13,000 gay and lesbian members of the military have already been discharged under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” including more than 300 linguists, at least 60 of whom specialized in Arabic.

Given the current needs of the our military, which are already stretched thin and are facing serious problems in recruiting and retaining troops, it makes no sense to continue upholding a policy that keeps able-bodied Americans from serving.

But this discriminatory law doesn’t just hurt our military readiness and national security – it insults the dignity and equality of every lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender American.

This issue is about more than the military. It’s about basic fairness.

And when the man who could have been our president starts trying to score cheap political points using LGBT people as a whipping post, it’s time for every American who believes in basic fairness – whether you’re gay or straight – to take a stand.
Thank you for doing your part to end this discrimination once and for all.

When we started our Boycott BP campaign, we knew we had to get their attention in a language BP understands – profits. Now, we know it’s working:

A chain of Convenience Stores in Philipsburg, Pa decided to debrand three of its BP-branded stations:

“We are debranding BP. We will no longer be associated with BP by the end of the month. We are doing this because of the backlash and bad publicity from the handling of BP’s catastrophe,” Sean Lay, vice president of operations, said in the report. “We don’t want to be associated with them anymore. We’ve had enough.”[Convenience Store News]

Our campaign has been covered by everyone from the New York Times to industry trade newspapers. You can be sure that BP is paying attention. Now, let’s turn up the heat.

Boycott BP until they plug the leak and clean up the mess
Join the Boycott today and we’ll send you a free bumper sticker to help spread the campaign

In spite of these early effects of the boycott, BP corporate headquarters is still playing games with the numbers and continues to escape accountability. Just this morning, the government updated estimates of the amount of oil gushing into the Gulf to be much higher than BP originally stated.

And yet, BP continues to deny the extent of the problem. A report from NPR asks: “BP officials insisted this week they have found no large plumes of oil concentrated underwater, although it begs the question: if the oil isn’t concentrated in the water, where is it?”

Instead of launching a multi-million dollar public relations offensive on T.V. to shrug off the blame and beg for customers, BP must take full responsibility for the cleanup of this unprecedented disaster. They need to know we’re not buying their spin or their gas until they get the job done and the disaster is completely cleaned up.

Pledge to buy your gas from Anyone But BP right now

BP had the resources to drill and create this horrible disaster, now they have the responsibility to clean it up. But, they won’t do it on their own. They need to know we will make them pay one way or another.

Thanks for everything you do.

The BP oil spill is the worst environmental disaster of its kind in our nation’s history. My administration has deployed every tool at our disposal for the response efforts. Thousands are working around the clock, including some of the top scientists and engineers from around the world.

We are working to hold BP accountable for the damage to the lands and the livelihoods of the Gulf Coast, and we are taking strong precautions to make certain a spill like this never happens again.

But our work will not end with this crisis. That’s one of the reasons why I invited lawmakers from both parties to join me at the White House to discuss what it will take to move forward on legislation to promote a new economy powered by green jobs, combat climate change, and end our dependence on foreign oil.

Today, we consume more than 20 percent of the world’s oil, but have less than two percent of the world’s oil reserves. Beyond the risks inherent in drilling four miles beneath the surface of the Earth, our dependence on oil means that we will continue to send billions of dollars of our hard-earned wealth to other countries every month — including many in dangerous and unstable regions.

In other words, our continued dependence on fossil fuels will jeopardize our national security. It will smother our planet. And it will continue to put our economy and our environment at risk. We cannot delay any longer, and that is why I am asking for your help.

Please stand with me today in backing clean energy. Adding your name will help Organizing for America create a powerful, public display of support for making this change happen.

The time has come, once and for all, for this nation to fully embrace a new future. That means continuing our unprecedented effort to make everything — from our homes and businesses to our cars and trucks — more energy-efficient. It means rolling back billions of dollars of tax breaks to oil companies so we can prioritize investments in clean energy research and development.

But the only way the transition to clean energy will ultimately succeed is if the private sector is fully invested in this future — if capital comes off the sidelines and the ingenuity of our entrepreneurs is unleashed. And we can do that by finally putting a price on carbon pollution.

Many businesses have already embraced this idea because it provides a level of certainty about the future. And by pouring resources into research and development, by building new markets, we will reinvent our economy — creating opportunities for entrepreneurship, for new companies and new jobs all across the country.

There will be transition costs and a time of adjustment. But if we refuse to take into account the full costs of our fossil fuel addiction — and if we refuse to heed the warnings from the disaster in the Gulf — we will have missed our best chance to seize the clean-energy future we know America needs to thrive in the years and decades to come.

The House of Representatives has already passed a comprehensive energy and climate bill, and there is currently a plan in the Senate — a plan that was developed with ideas from Democrats and Republicans — that would achieve the same goal. This week, I met with congressional leaders to determine a path forward. But this is an issue that Washington has long ignored in favor of protecting the status quo.

So I’m asking for your help today to show that the American people are ready for a clean-energy future.

A big win — and what’s next

Yesterday, thanks to your hard work, the U.S. Senate did the right thing — voting with the climate science and against a resolution that would have stripped the Clean Air Act’s protections against climate pollution.

The Senate is to be commended for defeating Senator Lisa Murkowski’s disastrously misguided proposal. But the truth is, in the face of the worst environmental disaster in our nation’s history, Senator Murkowski’s resolution never should have even reached the Senate floor.

The fact that we had to work to defeat this legislation is a testament to the continued strength of the fossil fuel lobby. But the fact that we did defeat it gives us fresh momentum for the months ahead, as our nation confronts the costs of our dependence on fossil fuels more directly than ever.

This summer, we can and must set our nation on the path of independence from oil and other dirty energy.

Will you donate to support Repower America’s campaign to pass comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation this summer?

We must confront the growing plumes of oil now consuming the Gulf Coast and soon to affect much of the Eastern Seaboard. We must pass comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation — our best hope of staving off the catastrophic climate change that will dwarf the Deepwater Oil Disaster in scope and devastation. And we must accomplish all this despite the millions of dollars that big oil will spend to defeat us.

Yesterday’s vote shows that when we work together, we can defeat these forces. Over the last two years, over 250,000 of us have taken action to protect the Clean Air Act, including:

  • Submitting over 180,000 comments to the administration urging the EPA to enforce the Clean Air Act’s limits on greenhouse gases,
  • Making over 30,000 phone calls opposing Senator Murkowski’s proposal and
  • Writing over 7,200 letters to the editor.

This summer, it’s time to take exactly the same tenacity and commitment we have shown on these attacks on the Clean Air Act and win the biggest prize of all: comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation that transitions our economy to clean energy.
