Amazon: No face surveillance tech for ICE or police

amazon-ICE-FB

Despite his claims of support for migrants, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has been secretly trying to sell ICE – Immigration Customs and Enforcement – his racially discriminatory facial recognition software, called Rekognition.1
Arming ICE with real-time facial recognition surveillance technology would supercharge the agency’s deportation machine, and could make undocumented immigrants afraid to seek out vital services in places that might have cameras.2 And given how frequently Amazon’s technology misidentifies Black people, it would increase the number of dangerous interactions between Black people and ICE’s law enforcement agents.
As law enforcement spy on Black activists, and the Trump administration continues its assault on immigrants’ rights, putting Amazon’s facial recognition surveillance tools in the hands of ICE and law enforcement will reproduce and amplify existing systems of oppression.3
Tell Amazon and Jeff Bezos: Stop fueling Trump’s anti-immigrant and anti-Black surveillance state. No facial recognition tech for ICE!
Amazon’s Rekognition is a dangerous surveillance tool with racial biases baked in. Academic research has already shown that facial recognition technology is less accurate for darker-skinned faces and women.4 This means that Black and Latinx people are much more likely to be misidentified and treated as a threat to law enforcement, biasing law enforcement agents before an encounter even begins. For Amazon’s Rekognition, the default settings are alarmingly inaccurate and racially biased. In a recent test of Rekognition that ran pictures of every member of Congress against a collection of mugshots, there were 28 false matches, with significantly higher incorrect results for people of color.5 The system even misidentified civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis.
Amazon’s own employees are deeply disturbed by this technology and openly questioning why they are being asked to build it.6 So far, more than 450 Amazon employees have signed a letter asking CEO Jeff Bezos to stop selling this technology.7 In an op-ed published last week, one of Amazon’s own employees warned that the technology’s known struggles with accurately identifying people with darker skin “will only reproduce and amplify existing systems of oppression.”8
At a time when Black and immigrant communities are organizing in public at high levels, despite the continued terror of discriminatory policing, handing this surveillance technology over to law enforcement and ICE threatens our freedom and our lives. We cannot allow Bezos to get away with saying he supports our communities while he profits from the sale of destructive surveillance tools like Rekognition. It’s time to hold Amazon and Jeff Bezos accountable for their contribution to Trump’s deportation machine.
Tell Amazon and Jeff Bezos: Stop fueling Trump’s anti-immigrant and anti-Black surveillance state. No facial recognition tech for ICE!

  • Hy-Vee, Inc., based in West Des Moines, Iowa, is voluntarily recalling six of its meat and potato products across its eight-state region due to possible contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The potential for contamination was discovered after Hy-Vee’s supplier, McCain Foods, announced it was recalling its caramelized mushrooms and fire-roasted tomatoes, which are ingredients that are used in six Hy-Vee products. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with these products. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Kris Kobach — The Top 5 Things You Need to Know

Getting to Know the Author of Arizona’s Anti-Immigrant Laws

AP/John HannaKris Kobach speaks to the Kansas House Elections Committee about voter fraud. Kobach is the architect of Arizona’s S.B. 1070 anti-immigrant legislation.

It’s time to get to know Kris Kobach, the author of Arizona’s S.B. 1070 law—which had a range of racial profiling features and was largely gutted by the Supreme Court yesterday. Unfortunately the one portion upheld by the Court may still encourage racial profiling by Arizona police during traffic stops and other minor infractions. Codifying racial profiling is essential to Kobach’s long-term strategy of “attrition through enforcement.” But just who is Kris Kobach, and what does he really believe?

Here are the top five things you should really know about Kobach:

1. He works for a racist hate group whose stated purpose is to reduce the number of people of color in the United States. Kris Kobach is counsel for the Immigration Reform Law Institute—the legal arm of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which the Southern Poverty Law Center labels a hate group. Kobach’s boss at the Immigration Reform Law Institute, Michael Hethmon, openly argues that the United States’ transition to a country where the majority of its citizens are people of color will lead to violence. And the founder of Federation for American Immigration Reform, John Tanton, wrote, “I‘ve come to the point of view that for European-American society and culture to persist requires a European-American majority and a clear one at that.”

2. He’s a virulently antigay bigot. Kobach uses divisive politics and has grouped gays and lesbians together with pedophiles. During his 2004 run for Congress, Kobach accused the Human Rights Campaign of promoting “homosexual pedophilia” in an attempt to smear him.

3. He’s a birther. In his bid for Kansas secretary of State, Kobach raised the question of whether President Barack Obama’s short-form birth certificate was sufficient to prove his citizenship. Later, when called on it, Kobach backtracked and said that he believed in the president’s citizenship but still maintained that questioning his birth certificate was valid.

4. He’s a self-serving opportunist. When Kobach takes his anti-immigrant show on the road, he makes a pile of money representing local communities, often running up huge bills. Kobach co-wrote anti-immigrant laws across the country, from Farmer’s Branch, Texas; to Fremont, Nebraska; to Prince William County, Virginia; to Hazelton, Pennsylvania; to Valley Park, Missouri; to Arizona; and Alabama. Kobach’s efforts have netted him more than $6.6 million in legal fees. And while serving as secretary of state in Kansas, Kobach appeared on out-of-state media at least 101 times in just one year, with an astonishing 31 appearances just on Lou Dobbs’ shows.

5. He’s antidemocracy. Kobach ran for Kansas chief elections officer on a flimsy voter fraud platform. Using nonexistent cases of alleged voter fraud as an excuse, Kobach pushed a law that will disenfranchise thousands of Kansans. He claimed that his voter ID law does not suppress the vote of citizens, and especially minority citizens, when in reality the opposite is true. After getting this law passed, Kobach did not take the steps necessary to make it possible for citizens who lacked an ID to get one for free, as the law required. This is no doubt one reason that Kobach’s approval rating among Kansans is in the tank at 32 percent.

This is the man behind Arizona’s S.B. 1070. He’s an opportunist earning millions of dollars while working for a racist hate group, which gives him a platform on hate TV and radio shows to peddle his reactionary vision for America. The next time similarly anti-immigrant legislation surfaces in state legislatures across our nation, see if Kris Kobach is behind the effort. Then you will know the real intent of the proposed law.
