Disaster has hit Haitians again. As of today, 262 people have died from a cholera outbreak in the Artibonite and Centre regions of Haiti and nearly 3,800 cases have been confirmed.

Highly contagious and spread by water, cholera can cause dehydration and death within hours, especially for children, if not treated. In response, CARE is amassing cholera prevention and treatment supplies to help avert an catastrophe should the disease spread. We’re especially concerned about a possible outbreak in Port-au-Prince.

An outbreak in the capital city’s extremely crowded and unsanitary tent camps, where 1 million survivors of the January 12 earthquake now live, would be devastating. The rainy season is underway and flooding, coupled with unsafe water conditions, can worsen the crisis. Prevention is critical.

Hundreds of thousands are at risk. When you make a tax-deductible gift today, you can help CARE save lives in Haiti and respond to crisis and extreme poverty around the world.

Since the earthquake struck on January 12, CARE has been tirelessly working to help Haiti recover, including building durable shelters for families; constructing latrines, showers and hand-washing facilities; making sure clean water is available; and promoting good health and hygiene through awareness campaigns, community trainings and more.

As you know, our poverty-fighting work doesn’t stop in Haiti. Every single day of the year, in Haiti and 71 other countries worldwide, CARE provides emergency relief and delivers comprehensive programs that strike at the root causes of poverty.
