Hurricane Maria:  90 Days of  Health Response and Recovery in Puerto Rico

In the days, weeks, and months that followed Hurricane Maria, HHS deployed thousands of health professionals to Puerto Rico to provide lifesaving care.  Today, the health care system is stabilizing and most health care facilities are open and operational. Public Health Emergency Medical Enterprise Publishes Key Planning Documents

The Public Health Emergency Medical Enterprise (PHEMCE) has released the PHEMCE Strategy and Implementation Plan and the PHEMCE Multiyear Budget.  The PHEMCE Strategy and Implementation Plan provides the blueprint for the PHEMCE to enhance national security through the development, procurement, and planning for effective use of critical medical countermeasures (MCMs).  The PHEMCE Multiyear Budget shows how much HHS agencies are spending or plan to spend over a five-year period to develop, review, and stockpile medical countermeasures.

NIH Lifts Funding Pause on Gain-of-Function Research

This week, NIH announced that it would lift the funding pause on certain types of experiments involving influenza, SARS and MERS viruses. NIH lifted the ban on this research following the publication of the new HHS Framework for Guiding Funding Decisions about Proposed Research Funding, which describes a robust review process that considers the potential scientific and public health benefits, biosafety and biosecurity risks, and appropriate risk mitigation strategies to help inform agency decisions. Learn More >>
