in the pursuit of change … GUN REFORM

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Edmund Burke

repost …

 another day another shooting!!!

we need folks to push for Gun Reform

As more Americans watch, wait and wonder when Congress will take a stand on gun control, more say there is absolutely no reason a civilian should own or have access to an assault weapon. The fact is assault weapons; the standard infantry combat choice for most modern armies has no place in a civil society.  Police already have trouble protecting and serving our communities against illegal (hand) guns, legislation that broadly regulates the firearms industry (ammunition) and firearms owners let alone automatic weapons solely made and meant to kill people quickly.

We have also been asking for some time now, at what point will our (rational, sane & educated) members of Congress, the firearm industry(ammunition) and gun owners stand up speak up or out over the current stalemate to move gun laws into the 21st Century. The NRA has clung on to power by holding an archaic law over the heads of Americans, as well as being a thorn in all our sides, spending millions lobbying for gun rights while controlling votes in Congress.

The Second Amendment, states: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Is it possible that this amendment is in dire need of a revaluation for the lives of our citizens in this 21st Century with all the new guns& weapons now available.

In 1994, Congress added a background check system to strengthen our existing laws to keep guns out of the hands of felons, drug abusers, and the mentally ill.

In 2004, Congress let the assault weapons ban expire. It is time to recognize and change the flaws in the background check system that have been exposed again and again over the years, in the massacres at Columbine, Virginia Tech, Arizona, Michigan, Washington state ,Colorado, Indiana, Portland, China, Chicago, Newtown CT,DC ,LAX airport, families all over this country, Young Black Males and some White males

If not now when, is a good question.

BossFeed Briefing from Working Washington ~

We are Working Washington

BossFeed Briefing for December 4, 2017. Last Tuesday, the city of Spokane passed a fair chance employment ordinance, which bars private employers in the city from categorically rejecting job applicants because of a past criminal record.

Early Saturday morning, the Senate voted for a budget bill which would cut taxes on the rich, threaten Medicare and Social Security, and do a host of other things that people are still figuring out because the bill was passed just a few hours after it was released and some of the language was literally handwritten in the margins.

Yesterday the Seattle Times editorial board argued for a yet another new round of public benefits for Boeing.

And Wednesday is the 110th anniversary of the Monongah coal mine disaster, which killed 361 miners in the worst such disaster in US history.

Just write the check

giant check

Three things to know this week:

plane arriving Thanks to a “glitch” in the company’s scheduling system, every pilot at American Airlines who requested vacation during the holiday season had that vacation approved. The union contract negotiated by the pilots bars the company from just canceling the previously-approved vacation, so instead the airline is desperately offering pay premiums to anyone willing to work in hopes of avoiding the potential cancelation of 15,000 flights.

bus Someone drove a bus directly through a picket line during a one-day strike by Seattle school bus drivers on Wednesdayforcing one person to jump up onto the hood to avoid injury. According to the Seattle Police Department, “it is not clear whether a crime has been committed.”

wrapped present Working Washington is hosting its first ever online auction, where you can bid on unique items & experiences like a custom chef’s knife, your very own ice cream party, and more. Check out the preview here — and of course the proceeds go to support our statewide workers’ movement!

Two things to ask:

Who’s the boss? Two different people are making claims to be the rightful heir to the throne of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the federal agency tasked with protecting consumer rights in the financial industry. One of the dueling bosses, Leandra English, has spent years as Chief of Staff and then Deputy Director working to help the agency succeed; the other, Mick Mulvaney, has called the agency a fraud.

mad WTF? Sexual harassment cases are routinely dismissed by the courts if the conduct involved fails to meet the threshold of being “severe or pervasive”. Judges even reject many cases that involve physical contact and other egregious behavior.

And one thing that’s worth a closer look:

money with wings While the stock market continues to hit new highs, the returns on that capital go almost exclusively to the top 1%, who hold almost all of the stock and other capital wealth. It doesn’t have to be that way, argues Matt Bruenig of the People’s Policy Project in a New York Times opinion piece that makes the case for a different approach. Bruenig argues for the establishment of a “social wealth fund”: the federal government would create an investment fund, owned equally by all adults, and the returns on those investments would be paid out to everyone in a “universal basic dividend.” While more equitable ownership may seem like a far-away dream, the idea of a social wealth fund has a long history, and there are already numerous current examples of social wealth funds in the world, including one which provides an annual check to everyone who lives in Alaska, and one which supports social benefits for the people of Norway.

Stop this unqualified judicial nominee, who failed to disclose conflicts of interest in his hearing, from getting a lifetime appointment.

Donald Trump is systematically trying to pack the courts with unqualified extremists.

His latest attempt is Brett Talley. Talley has never been to trial in the less than three years he’s practiced law. To top it off, the American Bar Association (ABA) unanimously voted him “not qualified” for a federal judgeship.1 Of the approximately 1,800 nominees ABA has rated from 1989 to 2016, just two had unanimously been voted as “not qualified,” Brett Talley of course being one of them.2

Despite Talley’s abysmal record, Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee approved him for a lifetime appointment. Soon, the full Senate will vote — and you can play a role in protecting our justice system.

Tell your senators an unqualified extremist like Talley has no place as a federal judge!

Gavel Take Action_500_Red

It gets worse.Talley failed to disclose his marriage to a top White House official who was recently questioned in the Mueller investigation. Talley omitted this despite being asked point blank to share any potential conflicts of interest.3

Talley is a extremist ideologue who has defended the KKK,4 called President Obama’s EPA a “lawless organ of federal power,”5 and mocked gun control after the Sandy Hook massacre.6 An unqualified extremist like Talley has no place in our courts.Donald Trump has been appointing judges at a faster rate than most recent presidents.7 Many of these roles are vacant because Senate Republicans unjustly blocked President Obama from filling them.

If we don’t stop nominations like Brett Talley, filling the courts with extremist ideologues could be one of the lasting and most damaging legacies of the Trump presidency.

Tell your senators to vote against Brett Talley for a lifetime appointment as federal judge!

In this together,

The SierraRise team

Not One Cent for the 1% ~ americanprogressaction.org

The Senate passed a tax bill that will have disastrous effects on working- and middle-class families while propping up the 1 percent through massive tax cuts for the rich. More than 80 percent of all households end up with a tax increase or get, basically, nothing from the GOP’s so-called middle-class tax cut, and the bill paves the ways for massive cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, education, and other essential programs.

However, the fight is not quite over yet. The bill must go through a final round of votes to get to President Donald Trump’s desk. We still have time to let our representatives know how horrible this bill is.

It’s not too late to stop this bill. Go to TrumpTaxToolkit.org to hold key senators accountable, and let them know that you do not support a bill that enables tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations.

It is not too late to stop this bill before it gets to the president’s desk. Use your voice, and contact your senators using TrumpTaxToolkit.org.
