Tech workers are sending a message to DoorDash: “We will not work for you until you fix your pay practices”

An Open Letter from Tech Workers to DoorDash

Tech workers are sending a message to DoorDash: “We will not work for you until you fix your pay practices”

$7 billion food delivery startup DoorDash is taking pay from people making close to minimum wage.

The way it works: DoorDash guarantees drivers a minimum payment for each delivery, but use tips to fulfill that minimum. If a user tips more, it doesn’t mean the worker gets paid more. DoorDash just pays less. The driver often won’t benefit from the tip at all, but can’t tell — DoorDash doesn’t disclose how much a user tipped on a given job.

We see you, DoorDash, and we will not be quiet until you give your workers the respect and compensation they deserve.

Gig economy food delivery app DoorDash has recently been exposed for their practice of pocketing tips meant for workers by paying their workers less when customers tip more. In other words, if you tip the driver for your delivery, the driver doesn’t actually get more money — it just means DoorDash gets to pay them less. In fact, DoorDash admits they pay workers as little as $1 per delivery as long as they can use the tip to cover the rest.

Silicon Valley investors may not care about companies like DoorDash cheating workers — but they do care about whether the company can hire the best tech talent. That’s why tech workers are signing on to a pledge to not work for DoorDash until they fix their pay practices by:

This means you must:
* Set a pay floor of $15 for every active hour with an active job, after accounting for expenses like mileage and extra payroll taxes paid by contractors.
* Award user tips on top of pay — not deducted from it.
* Provide drivers more transparency, including a detailed breakdown of pay.

It’s exciting to see tech workers taking a stand and speaking out in support of better pay & more transparency. Gig workers, customers, and supporters are coming together too. Sign on here to get involved with our campaign to make the gig economy #PayUp, and read the full letter below!
