Thurs. Telebriefing for members w/ Wisc. Sen. Chris Larson

This Thursday, March 24 at 3:00pm Eastern Time, please join People For the American Way, Wisconsin State Senator Chris Larson and Michelle Ringuette of the Service Employees International Union to discuss the Right’s relentless attacks on workers’ rights and the middle class in Wisconsin and across the country.

In Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana Florida and other states, right-wing governors and legislators have been using budget shortfalls as an excuse to pursue corporate interests’ longtime goals of busting unions, gutting vital programs that serve the poor and middle class and doing away with other protections for working families. Along the way, these lawmakers have led a campaign to demonize public employees and blame them for the economic mess that Wall Street and big corporations caused.

Can you join us on the phone this Thursday for an important PFAW member telebriefing on the national fight to save the middle class and the American Dream? RSVP now.

www.pfaw.org

Space is limited so don’t delay. We’ll email confirmed participants with the call-in information before Thursday.

Senator Chris Larson of Milwaukee was one of the 14 Democratic state senators who heroically crossed state lines in a last ditch effort to prevent Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature from passing Gov. Scott Walker‘s infamous attack on the basic collective bargaining rights of Wisconsin’s public employees. Ultimately, Senate Republicans did an end run around the rules to ram the Governor’s anti-worker plan through, and now an effort to recall some of those senators is underway. Sen. Larson, a true leader in this fight and a member of PFAW Foundation’s Young Elected Officials Network, will provide an update on the situation in Wisconsin.

In addition to Sen. Larson’s Wisconsin update, we’ll hear from SEIU’s Michelle Ringuette about the national landscape and how similar fights are playing out in other states. And PFAW’s leadership will provide an update on some of our activities and involvement on the state level.

Please don’t miss this opportunity and join us this Thursday at 3pm Eastern.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

UPDATE: Wisconsin Recall

Wow! Folks chipped in over $100,000 since Friday to help us recall Wisconsin Republican senators. Tomorrow, we’ll make some big decisions about how many TV, radio, and online ads we can afford. Can you chip in $3 and help us reach $150,000 by tomorrow? — Adam

——————————————————————————–

This is Wisconsin State Senator Chris Larson — and today, I’m heading home to Wisconsin to join the fight in person.

The last three weeks have shown what progressive strength and worker solidarity look like.

My fellow senators and I know that thousands of PCCC members in Wisconsin and across the nation have been fighting right alongside us — attending rallies, making phone calls, donating to some great TV ads, and telling your friends about the Republican war on workers.

I want to say thank you. I also want to let you know that the fight’s not over.

Republicans need to learn what accountability feels like. It’s time for Republican senators to be recalled from office.

Wisconsin Republicans brazenly stampeded over the will of the people as they engaged in their right-wing attack on workers.

They shut down the public hearings, they shut down the legislative hotline, they shut down debate in the Assembly in the middle of the night, and they tried to lock citizens out of the Capitol. And on Wednesday night, when they had their last chance at redemption, Republican senators chose to bend the rules and join Governor Walker’s war on working families.

The citizens of Wisconsin are rising up and engaging in the democratic process like never before. Recalls of the Republicans are kicking into high gear as clipboards begin to replace protest signs in neighborhoods across the state.

Governor Walker and Republican senators refused to listen to the public — but now the people will be heard all across the state at the ballot box.

Thanks again for standing with us in solidarity, and for being a bold progressive.

The Struggle in Wisconsin …

The struggle in Wisconsin is still ongoing, but MoveOn members like you have already played a pivotal role in fighting back against Governor Scott Walker‘s radical attack on workers’ rights.

Walker expected his budget bill to sail through, but instead, it’s sparked a national backlash and energized millions of people. And that’s thanks, in part, to you.

Since the fight began:

Thousands of Wisconsin MoveOn members attended the massive demonstrations in Madison, made calls to their state legislators, and sent almost 10,000 messages to Governor Walker, which protesters plastered all over the walls outside Walker’s office when he refused to accept them. http://www.moveon.org/r?r=206612&id=26435-17809870-dEjiEix&t=1

MoveOn members contributed more than $100,000 to the Wisconsin 14, the brave Democratic state senators who left the state to prevent Republicans from jamming through Walker’s proposal—providing them a huge boost to fight back against Republican attacks.  http://www.moveon.org/r?r=206615&id=26435-17809870-dEjiEix&t=2

MoveOn members sent more than 260,000 statements of support to the Wisconsin 14. We delivered the statements—all 5,700 pages of them—to State Senator Chris Larson. He was thrilled to share them with his colleagues and posted on Facebook: “Thank you for standing with us! (And yes, people actually do get paper copies of those forms you fill out online. Thank you MoveOn.org).”

MoveOn members nationwide contributed more than $445,000 to support the efforts to recall the Republican state senators who refuse to negotiate. http://www.moveon.org/r?r=206613&id=26435-17809870-dEjiEix&t=4  The folks running the recall report they’re off to an amazing start, beating their signature goal in the first weekend by 35%, and they’re hugely grateful for the early fundraising.

MoveOn members held solidarity rallies in every state capital—our biggest in years, and on just four days’ notice—to say that we are all Wisconsin and we won’t stand by while Republicans try to kill the American Dream. http://www.moveon.org/r?r=206323&id=26435-17809870-dEjiEix&t=5

It’s an amazing and inspiring list. And this fight is far from over. Even if Governor Walker manages to push through his disastrous proposal, the recall efforts targeting Republicans are already off to an amazing start and several of those who support Walker could be thrown out of office as soon as June.

With similar fights happening across the country and in Washington, we’ve got a long way to go before we put the American Dream back in reach for all Americans. But Wisconsin has sparked a national uprising and given us the strength to fight back.

For the moment though, we just wanted to take the time to say thanks, for all you do.

–Daniel, Joan, Kat, Lenore, and the rest of the team

P.S. With Republicans in Washington pushing devastating federal budget cuts—to education, student loans, NPR, environmental protection, family planning, health and nutrition programs for pregnant women and small children, and more—we’re looking to highlight the stories of those who’d be affected by the cuts. If any of the Republican budget cuts would affect you or your family.

Wisconsin Democrats

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker got prank called this week by someone pretending to be a billionaire Republican.

Walker revealed that Wisconsin “is ground zero” in the fight against “the public-sector unions.” He also said, “sooner or later there will be pressure on these [Democratic] senators to come back.”

Well, Wisconsin Senate Democratic Leader Mark Miller joined thousands of PCCC members on a call yesterday and vowed that he and other Democratic senators will “never stop fighting.”

Click here to watch a video summary of the call and donate $14 to these bold leaders — one dollar for every Wisconsin Senate Democratic hero.

We were also joined by the leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus — Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) — and a young progressive Wisconsin senator named Chris Larson who said, “We’re standing firm.”

Rep. Ellison called the senators “heroes.” And Rep. Grijalva declared, “If we win this battle for middle-class workers in Wisconsin, we will win everywhere else.”

These bold words made news in the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Politico, Talking Points Memo, many local newspapers, and more.

But Governor Walker will be ramping up the pressure on these senators.

Thanks for being a bold progressive,

Wisconsin state Senators joined with protesters …

Thank Wisconsin‘s courageous state senators who have joined with protesters to block the Republican attack on public employees.

Support the Wisconsin 14

Clicking here will add your name to this note to Wisconsin’s Democratic state senators:

“Thank you for taking a courageous stand. I stand behind you in your fight to block a vote on Gov. Walker’s outrageous attack on nurses, teachers and public employees.”

Amazing. Inspiring. This is what people power can do.

When Republican Governor Scott Walker attacked state workers and threatened to call out the National Guard if they protested, it sparked a popular uprising in Wisconsin. And now the extreme proposal to take collective bargaining rights away from public employees is temporarily blocked as a result of mass protests.

Tens of thousands of people — including members of CREDO Action — have been out in the streets and in the Rotunda in Madison, Wisconsin. Students and citizens are protesting in solidarity with nurses, teachers and workers.

And the people are not alone. Instead of caving to the opposition, their elected representatives are fighting with them. In fact, Democratic state senators boldly left the state in order to deny Republicans the quorum they need to pass Governor Walker’s radical anti-worker, anti-union bill. As long as every Democratic state senator refuses to go to the capitol, a vote cannot be held.

Thank the Wisconsin 14 — the Democratic state senators who have fled Wisconsin to block Gov. Walker’s attack on workers. Click here to automatically sign your name. http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=7158&id=16906-2591629-_fzv8Kx&t=9

Wisconsin state Senator Chris Larson, who is one of the senators in hiding, laid out the stakes in an open letter and asked for our support:

The ability to organize and get fair treatment are qualities that built our country… If this bill moves forward in Wisconsin, rights in all America we have grown to take for granted will no longer be so reliable… If this passes here, it will pass in your state… It is an unprecedented attack on workers, their communities and our tradition of working with labor to move our state forward… I am seeking your support for the fight ahead of us.

Larson, and his fellow Democratic senators, are literally working to evade capture by state police in order to prevent this radical attack on public workers. He’s asked for our support.

Let’s show the Wisconsin 14 that we wholeheartedly support their actions and offer our profound thanks for their leadership in this fight. Clicking here will automatically sign your name. http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=7158&id=16906-2591629-_fzv8Kx&t=9

Too often our elected representatives refuse to lead. But Wisconsin is proving that big things can happen when our elected officials work together with committed activists and fight back.

All 14 Democratic state senators are holed up outside the reach of the State Troopers who are working on orders of the Governor to forcibly return them to the capitol. If even one Democratic state senator is returned to the capitol, Republicans will be able to pass Gov. Walker’s bill. Not only that, but Republicans are organizing recall efforts to throw them out of office. The Wisconsin 14 need to hear encouragement from progressives nationwide. Let’s show them resounding support for their actions.

Thank Wisconsin’s 14 Democratic state senators and tell them they have your support. Click here to automatically sign your name  >> click on link >>http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=7158&id=16906-2591629-_fzv8Kx&t=9

Our teachers, nurses and other public workers wouldn’t have the chance to fight for their rights without the bravery of these Wisconsin state senators. I’m proud to have grown up in Wisconsin. I received an excellent education from its public schools and was raised in a working-class community that valued the contributions of every citizen. Wisconsin would not be the great state it is without the work of thousands of people who have dedicated their lives to public service.

Thank you for taking action in solidarity with the uprising in Wisconsin.

P.S.: SEIU has a list of solidarity actions planned for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in 21 states. For a list of actions compiled by SEIU and to RSVP, click here. http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=7165&id=16906-2591629-_fzv8Kx&t=13

P.P.S.: Special thanks to the worker who took our order Saturday afternoon at Ian’s Pizza on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin. When we asked if he could deliver pizzas to the protesters on behalf of CREDO Action members, he replied, “Hell, yeah!”
