June 26, 2013 – MINNEAPOLIS – In June 2013, Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) initiated four medical device notifications to customers worldwide about the SynchroMed Implantable Infusion System. These notifications provide clinicians with information to help identify and manage issues that impact the safe and reliable delivery of therapy using the SynchroMed Implantable Infusion System.

Miami, Florida Dolphin Intertrade Corp. is voluntary recalling “JaDera” and “Xiyouji Qingzhi” Weight Loss Supplement. These product have been found to contain undeclared Sibutramine, Sibutramine was a previously approved controlled substance for the treatment of obesity that was removed from the U.S. market in October 2010 for safety reasons, making this product an unapproved new drug.

Scenic Fruit Company of Gresham, Oregon today announced it is voluntarily recalling 5,091 cases (61,092 eight ounce bags) of Woodstock Frozen Organic Pomegranate Kernels. Based on an ongoing epidemiological and traceback investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) of an illness outbreak, the kernels have the potential to be contaminated with Hepatitis A virus.

Schenectady, NY: Price Chopper Supermarket is voluntarily recalling three varieties of Burst Cookies- Brownie, Almond and Raspberry- a frozen cookie produced by Jacqueline’s Wholesale Bakery and baked off in all of the chain’s in-store bakeries, due to the presence of milk, a known allergen, which was not declared on the ingredient label. The product is not harmful in any way to those who are not allergic to milk products.

Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Why We Vote: Obama Rescinds Controversial Bush “Conscience Clause”

NOTE: This election will be decided on turnout.  We’ll be running posts from the past three and a half years to remind ourselves why we really do need to vote – and get our friends out too!

After two years of trying, the Obama administration finally succeeded, late last week, in rescinding the “conscience clause,” a federal regulation designed to protect pharmacists and health care workers who want to refuse to provide care based on moral or religious grounds. This often translated into pharmacists being able to deny their customers contraceptives or HIV medications, and health care workers refusing to perform in-vitro fertilizations for lesbians or single women. An ambulance driver in Chicago even rejected a woman’s need for transportation for abortion, and there were reports of drugstore workers refusing to sell condoms to men they perceived to be gay.

The new rule only leaves space, which is far less controversial, for doctors and nurses who conscientiously refuse to perform abortions or sterilizations. Health care workers who feel that their rights have been violated can also file complaints.

As the Washington Post points out, this is likely to spark intense debate, especially since Republican legislators are trying to ensconce these regulations in law. The Bush regulation, which was put in place in the last days of his presidency, would have cut off federal funding to institutions that did not comply with these conscience rules. One of the most commonly cited objections to the regulation was that the rules extended far beyond health care workers, allowing receptionists to refuse to make appointments for abortions and janitors to decline to clean up operating rooms where abortions were performed.

This is a clear victory for women’s ability to access abortion, and more generally for people to gain access to contraceptives, HIV medications, and other procedures to which some may morally object.

“Without the rescission of this regulation, we would see tremendous discrimination against patients based on their behavior and based just on who they are,” said Susan Berke Fogel of the National Health Law Program, an advocacy group based in the District. “We would see real people suffer, and more women could die.”

But some Republicans are, clearly, eager to undermine this step forward.  We will continue to watch what happens in Congress, and keep you posted on future choice victories or encroachments on women’s rights.

Promoting Safety and Fairness for Children with Diabetes

My name is Latesha Taylor and I’m scared for my child‘s future.

Every day my 9-year old daughter Loretta goes to school — her life is at risk.

Why? Because without someone available every day to check her blood glucose and administer insulin, Loretta could enter into a coma … or worse.

You see, Loretta has diabetes. Yet her school system doesn’t believe that it’s their job to provide basic care for a child with diabetes when a school nurse isn’t available. Other states have adopted laws that allow school employees to provide diabetes care as trained volunteers … but not mine.

Instead, I’m forced to leave my job every time the nurse is absent or unavailable because the school system refuses to train other staff members in how to care for her. And that means I get fired. A lot.

It also means Loretta is falling way behind in school. She can’t pay attention or keep up with her schoolwork when her blood glucose hits an extreme. And because she has so many absences from leaving school when there’s no nurse available, she’s even been cited for truancy!

Now I’m fighting for my child’s rights … and her safety. And I’d like you to join me. Help fight for the care that children like Loretta deserve at school.
