Hold Rob McKenna accountable


Oops, someone forgot to purge their files! Rob McKenna got caught… red-handed.

Documents stored at the King County Archives reveal that, while serving as a King County Councilman, Rob was campaigning on the public dime, out of his Council office.

Now McKenna is facing an ethics compliant over his actions, which may have violated ethics law.

Talk about being caught red-handed and red-faced. McKenna’s an attorney. He knows the rules – It is illegal for public resources to be used for campaign purposes.

One of Rob McKenna’s first actions as Attorney General was to hire a Republican campaign operative as his “outreach” director and put him on government payroll. Was this Republican operative reaching out to constituents or working to further McKenna’s political ambitions?

Earlier this week it was revealed that McKenna boosted campaign spending from his Attorney General account in the months before he declared his candidacy for governor – raising concerns with the state campaign watchdog, the Public Disclosure Commission.

After reading these ethics stories, it’s easy to imagine a late-night file-purging party in the Attorney General’s office.

Kendra Obom, a young worker, asks Candidate Rob Mckenna about his stance on the Reproductive Parity Act … he says, “Get a Job”


“Why don’t you go get a job?”

That’s what Republican Rob McKenna said to Kendra Obom when she asked him for his position on the Reproductive Parity Act. Not only was McKenna’s reaction callous and insulting, his stereotype was wrong.

Kendra Obom works with youth at the YMCA.

Right now, more than 288,000 Washingtonians are unemployed. They are construction workers, educators, and manufacturers. They are friends, family, and neighbors. They are women and men.

Our new video, “288,000” asks the question McKenna created with his response: if McKenna will ignore people he thinks are unemployed, will he answer questions from those who have jobs?

With more than 288,000 Washingtonians out of work, we are looking to our elected official and candidates to present a real plan to create jobs in Washington. McKenna’s response won’t put anyone back to work.

Thankfully, Jay Inslee has a plan to build a working Washington – through innovation and clean energy – that will help rebuild the middle class. We need our next governor to listen to the unemployed, and focus on their priorities, if they are going to have a chance to “go get a job.”

When given the opportunity to show remorse for his treatment of Kendra Obom, McKenna doubled down on his attack, calling her “demeaning.” The only person who was demeaning was Rob McKenna; his comments were demeaning to women and the unemployed workers of Washington.

Support Jay Inslee for Governor of Washington State


 This week, when asked by a young woman to take a position on the Reproductive Parity Act, Republican Rob McKenna said: “My position is that I’m a lawyer for the state.” He then told her curtly to “go get a job.”

That’s unacceptable. A serious candidate for governor should have the courage to say whether or not he believes women deserve equal health care access, and arrogantly dismissing a hard-working Washingtonian for asking a fair and relevant question makes his lack of conviction even worse.

It just goes to show that when Republican Rob McKenna can’t have it both ways, we get a sense of who he really is — and the real Rob McKenna isn’t pretty. We need to hold him accountable.

You’ll never have to ask where Jay Inslee stands on women’s health care or reproductive rights. Jay has always stood up for women’s health and won’t allow politics or ideology to take precedence over common sense and science.

That’s why he unequivocally supports the Reproductive Parity Act and efforts to ensure that the partisan battles over women’s health care in “the other Washington” don’t endanger equal access here.

That’s also why both Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and NARAL Pro-Choice Washington have endorsed Jay, calling him a “steadfast champion for a woman’s right to choose.” It’s also one of the reasons I work for him.

Washington deserves a governor who will stand up for women’s health care. Jay Inslee will, but Republican Rob McKenna can’t be trusted.

If McKenna refuses to take a stand one way or the other on women’s health care, then maybe he’s the one who should “go get a job” —  not the young woman he insulted, who, by the way, DOES have a job leading youth empowerment programs.

We can fight back against McKenna’s political ploys and half-truths, and we can make sure there’s no way he’s elected as our next governor — but only by standing together.

On Sunday, Jay Inslee made an exciting announcement.

Effective March 20, Jay Inslee will step down from my seat in Congress to devote myself full-time to my race for governor and to talking to voters throughout Washington about creating jobs and building a new economy for our state.

In the coming years, we have a chance to seize our own destiny, build our own industries, and create our own technological revolutions right here at home.

And because that chance is so important to me, I am going to give everything I have to the cause of building a working Washington, and I am going to hold nothing back.

I am traveling everywhere in our state, and I am going to listen to everybody. If you have an idea, I want to hear it. If you have a problem, I want to know it. If you have a business, I want to help you grow it.

I am getting up every morning, seven days a week, to go out and listen to the people of Washington about their needs, their ideas, and their dreams.

This has not been an easy decision to make. I’ve enjoyed every day of my work representing the people of Washington’s 1st Congressional District. But I have not shied away from hard decisions before.

I did not shy away from the decision to vote against the deregulation of Wall Street. Nor did I shy away from the hard decision to vote against the Iraq war.

I was fully confident in those difficult decisions, and I am fully confident in this one.

THIS is the place where our destiny will be decided. THIS is the place jobs will be created. THIS is the place I can make a real difference getting 290,000 of our neighbors back to work.

I’m excited about what the coming months will bring, and I hope you are too. Thank you to the people of the 1st Congressional District for the honor of representing you all these years. And thank you to all those who have already given so much by helping me in this race.

I’m excited about being able to focus full time on talking to voters. I’m putting it all on the line.
