Back on Offense

After a trying two months, the new and improved HealthCare.gov had more than a million visitors yesterday and is functioning well for most people, enrollment is surging, nearly 1.5 MILLION Americans have been newly found eligible for Medicaid, and the GOP plan still consists of repeal and “we’ll see.”

Here’s today’s top health care stories:

  • 18,000 Enroll Through HealthCare.gov on Monday: Just under 27,000 people signed up for plans through HealthCare.gov during the entire month of October, but some 18,000 people enrolled through the revamped website in just 24 hours on Monday.
  • California Republicans Use Taxpayer Funds on Fake Obamacare Website: In attempt to sabotage the law and convince individuals not to enroll in coverage, California Republicans have rolled out an anti-Obamacare website designed to mimic the state’s exchange website. California Assembly Republicans built the site with taxpayer funds and bill it as a “public service.”
  • GOP Health Care Plan Is Repeal and ‘We’ll See’: When asked today whether Republicans would finally,  after 4.5 years of attacking Obamacare, offer their own alternative, Speaker Boehner’s response was merely, “we’ll see.” Republicans continue to call for repealing the law, which would now take away health coverage from the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have enrolled in the past two months and eliminate benefits that millions of other Americans have enjoyed for years.
  • Nearly 1.5 MILLION Americans Found Eligible for Medicaid: A new report out today from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services found that nearly 2.5 MILLION applications for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) were submitted in October and nearly 1.5 MILLION low-income Americans were found to be eligible for coverage.

BOTTOM LINE: Obamacare is working and it’s here to stay.

Rudy Lopez, Reform Immigration FOR America … Starving for reform

Eliseo and I

Support the fasters by sending a message to House leaders calling for on them to make reform a reality!

Send a postcard!

I have seen firsthand how our broken immigration system tears families apart.  Now that we are so close to passing immigration reform, I am pushing myself to do all that I can to demand that Speaker John Boehner and other House leaders bring reform to a vote. I am taking part in the Fast for Families on the National Mall.

We fast as an act of faith — faith in the power of our communities, and in our country’s ability to pass reform that will keep our families together. But our fast alone will not bring about change. We need support and action from our movement to make sure that the message of our fast has the impact it needs in the House of Representatives.

Today is a Day to Act, Fast, and Pray — a national day of action.

It is our moral responsibility to do everything we can to show our leaders the urgent need to stop family separation and to make immigration reform a reality. Help ensure that our message is heard in Congress right now.

Some fasters have gone more than three weeks without food. I am now on the 13th day of my fast, and I will take part until my body cannot continue. Although we face physical pain from hunger, we know that it is nothing compared to the pain thousands of families face from deportation.

As my friend and fellow faster Eliseo Medina said, “We’re tired. Feeling weak. But you know, as tired as we are, there is still a hunger within us for justice. A hunger to be heard. A hunger for the end of this suffering.”

I have faith that we can move our leaders to act, but we need your prayers and your voice. Send a message to leaders in Congress now.

With faith,immigration

Last week, John Boehner said that Republicans were locked in an “epic battle” to keep the government shutdown going.

As a World War II veteran, I fought in six epic battles. I helped fight the Nazis in the North African seas, and took part in operations that liberated Italy and the South of France, from Germany.

The Tea Party Shutdown is not an epic battle — it is bad governance.

Americans and veterans like me depend on our entire government being open.

I filmed a television ad with VoteVets, and it’s on the air starting today. I hope you’ll watch it and contribute to help keep it up.

After receiving General Wesley Clark‘s email last week, I responded with my personal story about how the shutdown impacts my life, while expressing my disgust with the Republican Party’s politicization of the World War II Memorial shortly after the shutdown began.

I served this nation with honor. Today, I can’t say the same thing about most Republicans in Congress.

Thank you for standing up for me,

Senate Passes Landmark LGBT Rights Bill

Pride Flag Thumbnail Friday (3x2)

Great News: It may have taken nearly two decades, but the Senate finally passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act today on a strong, bipartisan vote of 64-32 (one supporter was absent). Support was unanimous among Democrats and 10 Republicans, including conservative Senators like Kelly Ayotte (NH), Pat Toomey (PA), and Orrin Hatch (UT), also supported the landmark civil rights legislation.

Only one Republican senator even bothered to speak against the bill.

Good News: Before passing the bill, the Senate also overwhelmingly defeated a very damaging amendment that would’ve negated many of the bill’s protections by dramatically and unnecessarily expanding the bill’s religious exemptions, which are already quite expansive.

Bad News: Even before today’s historic vote, Speaker Boehner (R-OH) and other GOP leaders in the House of Representatives already said they won’t bring up the bill, even though it would almost certainly pass with a combination of Democratic and Republican votes.

Ugly News: Shockingly, 32 Senate Republicans voted today to deny one of the most basic civil rights — the right to earn a living — to LGBT people.

Bonus News: Hawaii is set to pass marriage equality tomorrow, which would make it the 16th such state overall and the 2nd just this week!
