BREAKING: President Obama’s marriage announcement

Human Rights Campaign

Just moments ago, President Obama made history by boldly stating that gay and lesbian Americans deserve full marriage equality.

In saying so, he reinforced what most Americans believe – LGBT people should be fully and equally part of the fabric of our society. Our families deserve nothing less than the equal respect and recognition that comes through marriage.

President Obama’s time in office has shown that our nation can move beyond its shameful history of discrimination and injustice.

I hope you’ll join me in sending President Obama a heartfelt thank-you note right now.

Thanks to President Obama’s leadership, millions of young Americans have seen that their futures will not be limited by what makes them different.

And now, in supporting marriage equality, he’s extended a message of hope to a generation of young LGBT Americans, helping them understand that they too can be who they are and flourish as part of the American community.

His words also remind gay and lesbian families everywhere that they are not alone or unheard as they struggle – like their neighbors – to afford healthcare and college for their kids, pay their taxes, and plan for retirement.

The burden of discrimination will one day be no more, in part thanks to the President’s leadership at this very moment.

Send a thank-you note to President Obama now.

President Obama has been a crucial ally to our cause. But it’s ordinary people like you, standing up for what’s right, who will continue to drive our movement forward. I thank you for your commitment, and I hope you’ll continue to work for the day when all are equal.

Gratefully, Joe Solmonese Joe Solmonese President

“Kill every last gay person” by Eden James, Change.org

Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” bill has been re-introduced. Citibank and Barclays wield significant influence in the country, but have so far been silent. Tell the two banks to speak up now and help stop the terrifying bill from becoming law.

Citibank and Barclays could save the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Uganda.

The Ugandan legislature could vote any day on a so-called “Kill the Gays” bill that could result in legalizing the death penalty for any LGBT person in the country. But Citibank and Barclays together have hundreds of millions of dollars invested in Uganda and wield significant influence in the country, just as banking lobbyists wield influence with Congress in the US. If Citibank and Barclays speak out against the “Kill the Gays” bill, Ugandan legislators will take notice in a hurry.

Collin Burton is a Citibank customer — he’s also gay. Collin started a petition on Change.org asking Citibank and Barclays to speak out against the “Kill the Gays” bill. Click here to sign Collin’s petition right now.

Citibank and Barclays are both big supporters of LGBT rights for their own employees, yet they invest money with a government that is threatening to execute LGBT people. “I expect Citibank and Barclays to live up to the values of equality and fairness, not just list them on their websites,” Collin says.

If Citibank and Barclays speak out against the “Kill the Gays” bill, Ugandan legislators will see that they are risking the business relationships that keep their government afloat.

Click here to sign Collin’s petition asking Citibank and Barclays to issue strong statements condemning Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” bill. The bill could come up for a vote any day, so swift action is essential.

Homophobic slurs … Eden James, Change.org

Tell defense contractor DynCorp to adopt policies to protect LGBT employees.

John Friso says that every day he went to work at defense contractor DynCorp, he was berated with homophobic slursHe was called “a f*ggot, a queer” and worse. According to John, his managers watched this happen time and again — and yet they did nothing.

John eventually left DynCorp and sued the company, which settled with him. Yet to this day, DynCorp lacks a non-discrimination policy protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees.

But since the massive private defense contractor relies on U.S. government contracts (also known as your tax dollars) for as much as 96% of its income — billions of dollars — you have the power to help change the culture of homophobia and unchecked harassment at DynCorp.

Tico Almeida is an attorney who devotes his life to strengthening employee protections. Tico was appalled by what he learned about conditions at DynCorp, so he started a petition on Change.org asking that DynCorp initiate and approve an anti-harassment policy to protect LGBT employees. Click here to sign Tico’s petition.

Other major defense contractors like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin have protections in place for LGBT employees. A DynCorp spokesperson recently indicated to a reporter that DynCorp might be open to protecting its LGBT employees: “We are always looking for ways to further strengthen our policies and procedures, and this is one area that we are currently examining,” the DynCorp spokesperson said.

Now that John Friso’s lawsuit has been settled, DynCorp executives may think there’s no urgency in instituting policies to protect other employees. They need to know that nothing could be further from the truth, and that the taxpayers who finance their corporation expect them to take swift action.
