Dear MoveOn member, We just witnessed an election bought and paid for by corporate front groups and secret donors, and we have exactly 63 days to do something about it.A bill in the Senate would force the high rollers behind the millions in attack ads to come out of the shadows. If we know who they are we can hold them accountable for trying to buy elections for the Republicans who support their pro-Wall Street, pro-oil company agenda.

This is our last best chance to put some rules back into our election process before newly elected Republicans take office and kill any hope of campaign reform in January. We must start to put democracy back in the hands of the American people.

Earlier this year the DISCLOSE Act came up one vote short. Several Republicans have said they support the principle of transparency but didn’t want it to take effect until after the election.

That means right now we have an opportunity to get that final vote—but we need to convince the Democrats to bring up the bill before the end of the year and put pressure on the potential Republican supporters to stand by their claims.

A coalition of organizations is backing a new push for the DISCLOSE Act launching today to support a final vote for this common-sense measure. By adding our voices today, we can help make sure the Senate seizes on the opportunity to hold corporations and CEOs accountable for their attempts to buy our elections.

Important update: Late Monday night, we got a call informing us that Lauren Valle, a MoveOn supporter, was attacked by campaign volunteers for Rand Paul, the Republican Senate candidate in Kentucky. The video is pretty awful: Three men threw Lauren to the ground, held her down, and stomped on her head and neck. She ended up in the hospital with a concussion. She’s still recovering, but she’s already speaking out about what happened—and pressing charges against her attackers, at least one of whom is so unrepentant he just demanded an apology from Lauren.

This is upsetting and outrageous and fundamentally anti-democratic. What’s worse, it’s part of a growing pattern of right-wing violence and intimidation, fueled by violent rhetoric from Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Sharron Angle, and others.

Here’s the thing, folks: we can’t let this intimidate us or derail us (which is the intent, after all). Instead, let’s work even harder over the next week to defeat the candidates that are stirring up hate. Lauren’s not stopping, and we won’t either.

Tuesday: Stop secret corporate ads in Seattle
 

 

MoveOn members in Seattle are holding a press conference on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at 12:00 PM to expose the hundreds of thousands of dollars that right-wing groups are spending on ads to deceive voters in Washington. Can you make it?

$10 million in one week?!

That’s the amount of money that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is spending right now to attack members of Congress who supported health care reform.1

And they have help. Across the country, we’re seeing deceptive campaign ads from harmless-sounding groups like “American Crossroads” and “Americans for Job Security.” These right-wing corporate front groups are pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into winning back Congress for Republicans.

Too many voters in Washington are seeing the ads but aren’t hearing the truth—so we need to get the word out about who is behind the avalanche of right-wing attack ads.

On Tuesday in Seattle, local MoveOn members will release a new report that details how much money these national groups are spending on swing races in Washington.

We need to get this message out to the media and to swing voters in Washington—before it’s too late. 

It’s a busy season for many folks—but coming out to this event is a great way to help fight corporate influence. This is the first big electoral season in the wake of Citizens’ United—and it’s crucial that we speak out together against out-of-control special interests throwing their weight around. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the poster child for corporate corruption of our electoral system.

This year alone the Chamber has pledged to spend $75 million on ads attacking candidates who don’t meekly bow down to the biggest and wealthiest corporate interests.

However, an explosive new report by the Center for American Progress reveals that some of that corporate cash might be coming from foreign entities, which would be a federal crime.

There is already entirely too much corporate cash spent on our elections. It’s intolerable that our democracy would be further undermined by illegal donations from foreign interests.

That is why we are joining our friends at MoveOn in asking Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department to open an investigation immediately.

The Chamber of Commerce denies that it uses foreign money in any way that’s illegal, but the Center for American Progress has documented how the Chamber aggressively raises money outside the United State from foreign entities — including state-run companies in Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, India and Russia — and deposits that money into the same general fund used to fund the Chamber’s political program.

Because of the Chamber’s tax status as a trade organization, it is able to shield most of its financial information from the public. So without a government investigation, all we have is the Chamber’s woefully insufficient word that it is abiding by the law.

Given the stakes of this election, we cannot settle for nothing more than “Trust us” from an organization with such a huge credibility problem. And we cannot wait as this issue winds its way through a Federal Elections Commission rendered slow and toothless by its Republican members.

That is why we are calling on the Department of Justice to immediately move to investigate this explosive charge.
