Choice : In The Courts

 NARAL Pro-Choice Washington

Historically, our federal court system has played an important role in protecting citizens’ civil rights. In 1973, the U.S. Supreme court guaranteed women the right to choose an abortion in the landmark case Roe v. Wade. Since then, the court has upheld the core principles outlined in Roe v. Wade, but has agreed to hear cases brought forth by lower courts that are efforts to restrict access to abortion. With a bare 5-4 majority on the Supreme Court in support of Roe v. Wade, it is more important than ever that we protect the independence and objectivity of our courts.

Below you can learn more about attempts to chip away at a woman’s right to choose. Most recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to uphold Bush’s Abortion Ban Act of 2003. This ruling prevents doctors from performing an abortion procedure that is often necessary to protect the health of the woman. This decision allows the state to intervene in a medical decision that should be left between doctors and patients.

Voiceover: “As you’re making your decision … maybe you’re wondering what to believe about Mitt Romney.”
“Well, when it comes to protecting your access to birth control …  and the basic women’s health care services Planned Parenthood provides … one thing we must remember, is this:”
Mitt Romney: “I’ll cut off funding to Planned Parenthood.”
Voiceover: “He’ll cut it off. Cut us off.”
Mitt Romney: “Planned Parenthood. We’re going to get rid of that.”
Voiceover: “Women need to know … the real Mitt Romney.”

President Obama has fought for Native American communities to increase opportunities for tribes and individual tribal members. The President has respected and worked hard to strengthen our government-to-government relationships.  This administration also recognizes our history together and acknowledges the unique heritage of Native peoples that includes you in the dreams that we all share.

Republican women share their history with the Republican Party and how the party’s views are no longer aligned with their own. They don’t support Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and share how Romney and Ryan are wrong for women.
As they share:
“If you truly believe in a small government. That government shouldn’t be deciding what I can and cannot do with my own body.”
“There is no way on God‘s green earth that I would consider voting Republican.”
“I don’t even want to think about them having control—as a woman I don’t.”
“If you’re a conservative woman, and you believe in small government, then Barack Obama is your candidate because he’s keeping the government out of the decisions that should remain between you and God, and you and your own conscience.”

This past weekend, Mitt Romney said that he wants the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade – the decision that recognized a woman’s constitutionally guaranteed right to choose.1

And you know what? He’s trying to make his position sound reasonable so that voters won’t notice.

We’re not about to let him get away with that!

We created this graphic to catch people’s attention – but I need your help to get it in front of as many people as possible.

Share this graphic on Facebook so that people know about Mitt’s plan to pack the Supreme Court with justices who will ban abortion.

When Romney appeared on “Meet the Press” this past weekend, he tried to sound reasonable by saying that people can disagree on the issue of abortion. But in the next breath he told viewers:

“Well, I don’t actually make the decision the Supreme Court makes and so they’ll have to make their own decision…. I hope to appoint justices for the Supreme Court that will follow the law and the constitution. And it would be my preference that they reverse Roe v. Wade and therefore they return to the people and their elected representatives the decisions with regards to this important issue.”

Let’s be clear: Mitt Romney wants to outlaw abortion.

I think that voters need to know where Romney stands – and that he’s ready to pack the Supreme Court with justices who will take away women’s freedom and privacy.

Tell your friends about Romney’s plan to take over the Supreme Court so that it can outlaw abortion. Share this graphic on your Facebook wall.

Thanks for standing up for women time and again.

My best,

Nancy Keenan
