Russ Feingold’s opponent is Ron Johnson, a millionaire who’s spent $5.2 million of his own money trying to buy Russ’s Senate seat.

Ron Johnson supports NAFTA. He likes the Patriot Act. He thinks speaking out against the war is “extremely harmful to our nation.”

Lucky for us, Russ got Johnson to agree to three debates. Now Ron Johnson going to have to stand next to Russ and defend his extreme positions to Wisconsin voters.

FDL activists stepped up for Russ big time two weeks ago, raising more than $38,000 for his campaign. We want to show Russ and Wisconsin voters that ordinary people want to see Senator Feingold return to the Senate next year, not a self-funded millionaire.

The first debate is TONIGHT. Can you help us reach $50,000 for Russ? It’s critical we make a strong push for Russ right now. Click here to donate:

Russ stood alone and opposed the Patriot Act. He opposed FISA. He opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And he’s done the same thing no matter who controls Congress or the White House. He always put principles before party.

Russ is locked in a tough battle, but he’s fighting hard. He’s got 22 field offices across Wisconsin, more than any campaign in country, and his supporters are working hard to turn out voters.

But a lot is riding on these debates. We want Russ to know going into them that we’ve got his back, so we set a goal of $50,000. We’re almost there – can you please chip in to make sure Russ Feingold can continue to fight for what’s right?

Russ was there for us when it was hard. Let’s be there for him. Click here to donate and help us get to $50,000 for Russ.

With your help, we’ll show Wisconsin voters that principle counts over party; that people power will prevail over a self-funded millionaire who wants to buy his way to the Senate.

Thanks for supporting Russ, and for all you do.

All too often, those who proclaim to have strong principles regarding free speech or domestic spying or torture when “the other guy” is in power abandon those concerns when it’s their own party’s turn at the helm.

Not Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold. He’s the rare person of conviction who stood alone and heroically voted against the Patriot Act when every other member of the Senate voted “aye.” And his principles don’t change just because there’s a new resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

But Russ is in a tough battle. He’s trailing his well-funded opponent by a wide margin. If Russ loses, while party bosses on both sides of the aisle can conspire to keep Joe Lieberman in the Senate, it sends a message to every member of Congress that there is no popular support for those who put themselves on the line in defense of our first amendment rights.

Our country can’t afford for Russ Feingold to lose this election.

Feingold voted against TARP under Bush, and he voted against it again under Obama. He can’t call on the fat cat bankers to fund his race like so many others can.

There’s only one yardstick, and Russ applies it to everyone.

Feingold’s opponent, Ron Johnson, has more “flexible” principles. He’s a millionaire installed by the party chieftans over the objections of local activists. When Wisconsin activists asked Johnson whether he supported the Patriot Act, he said “I wasn’t overly concerned with George Bush in power. I’m a little more concerned about the Patriot Act when you have Barack Obama.”

Johnson, like Joe Lieberman, is no fan of free speech either. Lieberman famously said that “in matters of war, we undermine presidential credibility at our nation’s peril.” Likewise, Johnson said that Feingold was “undermining our troops” by speaking out against the war in Afghanistan, and that it was “extremely harmful to our nation.”

Russ needs your help. Can you please donate $5 or more to help Feingold fight back against his Lieberman-lite opponent?

Russ Feingold is the best defense of civil liberties in the Senate. His defeat would be an enormous blow to the tenuous wall holding back things like biometric ID programs that Joe Lieberman’s Department of Homeland Security is simply salivating over.

The time is coming when Americans will have to decide: do we stand and fight for our right to privacy and individual freedom, or do we capitulate to the continued erosion of our civil liberties?

If you choose “fight,” then join me in fighting for Russ Feingold. Click here to donate $5 or more to Russ Feingold now.

Russ Feingold down by 6

The latest polls show that Sen. Russ Feingold is in serious danger of losing in November—and we simply can’t afford to let that happen. We’re making his race our top national priority, and we need to invest additional resources in Wisconsin immediately. We need at least 102 donations from Seattle today. Can you chip in $5?

Red alert: The latest polls show that Senator Russ Feingold could lose in November. They all him have him down by at least 6 points against a tea party Republican who actually thinks climate change is caused by sunspots.1

There’s no better, more principled Democrat in Washington than Sen. Feingold: The only senator to vote against the PATRIOT Act. A steadfast opponent of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And a passionate crusader against corporate influence in politics.

But since those very corporate interests have already spent $650,000 trying to defeat him, he’s now facing the fight of his political life.2 Because keeping Sen. Feingold’s voice in the Senate is so important, this race has become our top national priority.

We need to invest additional resources in Wisconsin immediately, which means raising at least $375,000 today. That’ll take at least 102 donations from folks in Seattle. Can you chip in $5? Just click here:

With enough resources, we can recruit more volunteers to help Feingold’s campaign get out the vote, run an additional wave of ads in Wisconsin, and double our efforts to expose the corporate money behind the right-wing attacks on him.

We’re ready to expand on the key pieces of our campaign:

  • We’re firing up the recruitment engine we used to turn out hundreds of thousands of volunteers for the Obama campaign in 2008. In the next six weeks, we’re planning to make 500,000 calls nationwide to build a grassroots army and get out the vote.
  • Our team of expert field organizers and specially trained volunteer leaders are working around the clock to expose the corporate money backing Feingold’s opponent, as well as Republicans in other states.
  • And every time the right wing tries to smear Feingold and other Democrats who voted for the health care bill, we’re pushing back with hard-hitting ads and grassroots media campaigns.

Sen. Feingold can absolutely come back and win. Even the pollster who found Feingold down by 11 points predicts it’ll be a dead heat if voter turnout matches 2008 levels—and adds, “Right now these races look very difficult but if Democrats wake up between now and November they have the potential to become toss ups.”3

In a moment like this, with polls so close and just weeks to go before the election, the “ground game” is what’ll tip the balance—and that’s something MoveOn members excel at.

We’ll be able to expand our grassroots organizing and ad campaigns if at least 102 people from Seattle donate today. Can you chip in $5?
