BREAKING: President Obama’s marriage announcement

Human Rights Campaign

Just moments ago, President Obama made history by boldly stating that gay and lesbian Americans deserve full marriage equality.

In saying so, he reinforced what most Americans believe – LGBT people should be fully and equally part of the fabric of our society. Our families deserve nothing less than the equal respect and recognition that comes through marriage.

President Obama’s time in office has shown that our nation can move beyond its shameful history of discrimination and injustice.

I hope you’ll join me in sending President Obama a heartfelt thank-you note right now.

Thanks to President Obama’s leadership, millions of young Americans have seen that their futures will not be limited by what makes them different.

And now, in supporting marriage equality, he’s extended a message of hope to a generation of young LGBT Americans, helping them understand that they too can be who they are and flourish as part of the American community.

His words also remind gay and lesbian families everywhere that they are not alone or unheard as they struggle – like their neighbors – to afford healthcare and college for their kids, pay their taxes, and plan for retirement.

The burden of discrimination will one day be no more, in part thanks to the President’s leadership at this very moment.

Send a thank-you note to President Obama now.

President Obama has been a crucial ally to our cause. But it’s ordinary people like you, standing up for what’s right, who will continue to drive our movement forward. I thank you for your commitment, and I hope you’ll continue to work for the day when all are equal.

Gratefully, Joe Solmonese Joe Solmonese President

Amendment 1 …Michael Langenmayr, Democracy for America

North Carolinians voted down Amendment One — an anti-gay amendment that has far-reaching implications for all families.
Amendment One doesn’t just ban marriage for gay and lesbian couples — it would ban civil unions, domestic partnerships and any other sort of legal recognition.

This is an issue of Civil Rights …

It would also restrict the rights of unmarried couples — gay or straight — to visit one another in the hospital.
Amendment One restricts other rights from unmarried couples, too — like healthcare. The amendment is so poorly-written that there are many far-reaching consequences. If passed, children of unmarried couples could lose their health insurance and prescription drug coverage.
It even restricts domestic violence protections to married women, leaving unmarried women more vulnerable. Single women would not receive the justice and protections they count on and deserve.
Amendment One is an attack on all families — and we need to stop it, now.

Thank you for everything you do.

By now, you’ve probably seen the reports that our opponents are disorganized, and not collecting many signatures or much money to overturn marriage equality in Washington State. Don’t believe the hype – not even for one second.

They only need 120,577 valid signatures to place Referendum 74 on the November ballot, and we expect them to easily succeed. In fact, the opposition – led by the National Organization for Marriage – has pledged $1,000,000 to ensure this happens.

Below are two things you can do this month to help protect marriage in Washington State.

Pledge to Approve Referendum 74

Take the Pledge to Approve Referendum 74
and protect marriage equality in Washington State this November 6. As we continue to ramp up our operations in the state, we’re going to need all hands on deck to ensure that our efforts are successful. Your pledge will help HRC and Washington United for Marriage identify hundreds of thousands of supporters needed to win.

Volunteer to Approve Referendum 74

To defend marriage equality in Washington State, we need you to volunteer with our efforts to Approve R-74. While the election may not be until November 6th, the hard work of identifying supporters has begun and must continue to grow over the next seven months. We need to identify 1.5 million voters to cast their ballots in our favor – and we need your help to do it.

a message from sen.Barney Frank … Help build a working Washington State!

Help elect a pro-equality governor.

Last year, New York state showed what a difference a governor can make in the fight for marriage equality.

In 2012, Washingtonians have a chance to elect another governor who will always stand up and fight for equal rights: my friend, Jay Inslee.

Jay is facing a tough race against a well-funded opponent — one whose stance on equality couldn’t be further from Jay’s. With landmark marriage equality legislation making its way through the Washington legislature as we speak, Washington will need a governor who can be counted on to stand up and fight for all Washingtonians’ equal rights.

Will you join me and contribute $5 or more to Jay’s campaign today?

All it takes is a quick look at each candidate’s previous statements to figure out where they stand on marriage equality.

Jay is unequivocal. He says, “I believe in marriage equality,” and that equality for all couples is a “quintessential Washington value.”

And Jay took this principled stand at the very beginning of his campaign for governor — before everyone’s eyes were focused on the marriage equality fight in Washington.

Not Rob McKenna. He thinks marriage equality “threatens to destroy all standards we apply to the right of marriage” and has equated it to polygamy.

As Washington’s next governor, one of these men will be responsible for enforcing Washington’s marriage equality legislation. One of these men will lead a state government that will have to choose whether or not to stand by Washington’s gay and lesbian families when that legislation’s validity is challenged.

Only one of these men can be trusted to take on that job: Jay Inslee.

Join me today and help make sure Washington’s next governor is one who stands on the side of equality and will stand in defense of the progress we’ve made.

Make a contribution of $5 or more to Jay’s campaign today.

As a long-time advocate of marriage equality, the progress we have made across this country in the last few years is inspiring.

We couldn’t have done it without the grassroots efforts of millions of people standing together, and we couldn’t have done it without courageous elected officials who refuse to accept discrimination any longer.

The grassroots momentum for marriage equality is building in Washington. As Jay said earlier this week — “We are standing at the edge of history.”

Now we need to make sure Washington’s next chief executive is one who will champion this movement and fight for us.

Contribute $5 or more to support Jay Inslee and help elect a pro-equality governor for Washington.

Thank you for your generous support of Jay’s campaign.

Sincerely,

Barney Frank
United States Congressman
