just another rant …

It’s the middle of April , technically spring, the last day to file taxes, but some Americans are still battling snow or summer like temperature while others hear birds chirping and it feels like spring , though if you live on the left coast ….  It still feels like fall.

The weather is like politics …right, seemingly straight forward with designated seasons only to find as the years progress,  little bumps appear that turn into malicious masses and in spite of it those who happen to be addicted to politics like so many wait to see when and where the sequester hammer will fall.   Though the sequester is only about a month old the media seems to have moved on to sizing up how Hillary will do against the various Republicans wanting to be King; I mean President.

If you did not know better and took what the media spews as the truth, it seemed as if we were closer to 2016 than the beginning of President Obama’s 2nd term.  Telling viewers that gun safety legislation was more than impossible and a filibuster was imminent; then President Obama gave a fabulous speech with families of victims of gun violence standing with President Obama in support of better gun safety laws. This led Newtown families to be advocates for their and our futures asking that members of Congress to do their jobs and let the debate on gun reform happen on the floor of the Senate and the first test vote to move forward and debate Gun Reform was taken  on the Senate floor and passed  68 -31. Unfortunately, two Democratic Senators decided to side with Republicans and while gun reform seems like a no brainer to me we should give props to anyone for their bipartisan efforts to move gun laws into the 21st Century.

Now, the media focus still seems to want viewers to accept that nothing positive can be done in Congress and we hear all their skepticism they have leaped frogged from 2016 elections to the pushing public cynicism on all that is on the Congressional calendar.  Yet, this is the time that voters, people who have friend’s family or co-workers fallen victim to gun violence make calls to a Republican member of the House

This week, in Congress the political games are just about to begin; the so-called debates heated and the word filibuster will probably make its way into even the youngest members of our society’s vocabulary, but as Margaret’s Mead said fits …

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. – Margaret Mead

“Don’t Let Seattle Lose Progressive Radio”

Jerry Large has done an excellent article about what we are doing:

Broadcasting a plea for progressive talk radio, April 4, 2013

http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2020704232_jdlcolumn04xml.html

Progressive talk currently available

Steph and the Mooks – KLAY AM 1180 has changed its schedule and is now airing Stephanie Miller “live” 6:00 – 9:00 AM.  According to Bruce of KLAY, Stephanie prefers to air during the live show time slot because they get listeners calling into her show.

Thom Hartmann is still airing on KLAY AM 1180, 4:00-7:00 PM, and KBCS 91.3 FM, Noon-3:00 PM

Other news

A team of people has volunteered to plan a 1090 Listener Rally. We will hear more soon!

We now have over 9,600 signers on the SignOn petition.  We want to build it to over 10,000.  If you know someone who hasn’t signed yet and would be interested in what we are doing, please send them the link: “Don’t Let Seattle Lose Progressive Radio”

The development of our website is progressing.  We’ll let you know when it’s accessible.

A Golden Tennis Shoe

The Golden Tennis Shoe Awards are my favorite event of the year. I get to honor ordinary citizens who have done extraordinary things to improve their communities. I get to the opportunity to spotlight the stories of these exemplary individuals and to recognize their inspiring work. This year promises to be especially exciting because we have the Second Lady, Dr. Jill Biden keynoting and helping us honor this year’s awards recipients.

Please click here to RSVP, this is a very popular event and space is limited!

Here are the luncheon details:

Noon, Monday, April 29th

At the Westin Hotel

1900 5th Avenue

Seattle, Washington

www.pattymurray.com/GTS

I hope that you can join us at the luncheon. It will be an incredible opportunity to see the awardees and hear from Dr. Jill Biden, a lifelong educator who is also a military mom. I am so excited to welcome my friend to Seattle and would love to have your help.

Sincerely,

Patty Murray US Senator

Save Bristol Bay: ~ repost from 2009 ~ sigh

ANCHORAGE – Seattle diners who order the salmon will get their meal with a message.

Chefs at more than a dozen restaurants are cooking up fish dishes that come with a special side: a warning that the creature’s future could be threatened by a giant gold and copper mine proposed for Bristol Bay in southwest Alaska, home to the world’s largest sockeye salmon runs.

Kevin Davis, co-owner of the Steelhead Diner, is an avid catch-and-release fly fisherman who recently returned from Washington, D.C., where he lobbied for permanent protection of Bristol Bay.

“Wild seafood is a rare and special commodity,” Davis said Thursday. “When I heard the news about the Pebble Mine and how it could potentially affect what is probably the world’s remaining strongholds of salmon, I became very concerned.”

To encourage his customers to help in the cause, the Steelhead Diner will feature three dishes using Alaska salmon: Tomato-Crusted Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon, Meyer Lemon-Crusted Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon and Hot-Smoked Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon Cheesecake.

Meeting with a KPTK Insider

SeattleWAthumbpixs

Our Progressive Radio in Seattle (PRS) Team had a meeting this past week with a former advertising sales person for KPTK who provided us with some interesting information about the demise of 1090 Progressive Talk.

  • 1090 has been owned by CBS since its inception and was the only progressive talk station owned by CBS in the country.
  •  CBS chose to not spend any money on advertising for KPTK and did minimal guerilla marketing for promotion.
  • When KPOJ in Portland first became a progressive talk station, they spent money on advertising and it did well for the first year.

Please help us build signers on our petition

Our SignOn petition has over 9,100 signers.  We want to build it to over 10,000.  If you know someone who hasn’t signed yet and would be interested in what we are doing, please send them the link: “Don’t Let Seattle Lose Progressive Radio” http://signon.org/sign/dont-let-seattle-lose-1?mailing_id=9335&source=s.em.cr&r_by=4666192

When we’re ready, MoveOn will pay for making one set of paper copies for us to deliver.  The plan is to create a media event, if we can find a reporter that wants to cover it.  We can deliver electronic copies of the signers anytime.

Website in progress

A volunteer is helping create a website that will be on a free platform.  We’ll let you know when the site is up and running.

Meeting with Al Gore?

A member of our PRS team met briefly with Al Gore (while he was on his book tour) and shared our plight of losing progressive talk radio in the NW.
