Unqualified and Dangerous ~ one is too many but this list grows

The Trump administration has been trying to stack the federal bench with unqualified and extremist judges. In the past two weeks, three judicial nominees withdrew from consideration after public outcry about their lack of qualifications, failure to disclose critical information, and outrageous views. Two nominees had never tried a case or argued a motion. One of them famously referred to transgender children as part of “Satan’s plan.”

The National Women’s Law Center has been on the frontlines of this fight, making sure that Senators and the public have all the facts about judicial nominees’ records — and how women would fare if they were confirmed. Federal courts decide cases that impact women’s lives every day, and preventing unqualified, dangerous ideologues from becoming federal judges couldn’t be more important.

You can help us continue to fight for a fair and independent judiciary by supporting NWLC today. Make your 100% tax-deductible donation now.

These are just some of the individuals whom President Trump has nominated to the federal bench.

  • Kyle Duncan, nominated to a lifetime position on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, has been one of the leaders in the effort to allow employers to use religious beliefs to deny women access to birth control.
  • Damien Schiff, nominated to a 15-year term on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, called Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy a “judicial prostitute” and compared abortion to slavery.
  • Thomas Farr, nominated to a lifetime position on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, aggressively defended a law described by the court that struck it down as “the most restrictive voting law North Carolina has seen since the era of Jim Crow.”

These individuals are just the tip of the iceberg. They weren’t nominated in spite of these dangerous views — they were nominated because of them. We can’t let Congress continue to rubber stamp judges for lifetime positions on the federal bench. We need you for this fight — please support our efforts by making your tax-deductible donation today.

There’s so much at stake. Federal courts decide legal rights and principles that are critically important to women, including the right to privacy, equal protection, anti-discrimination protections at work and at school, and protections for health and safety. And many of the judges President Trump has nominated this year are also on his unprecedented list of judges he would consider for a Supreme Court vacancy. We cannot accept any of this as typical. Not the nominees who have never argued a motion or taken a deposition and not the nominees who posted deeply unsettling and biased commentary on anonymous blogs. We will continue to expose their records and shine a light on the importance of the federal courts.

Contribute to the National Women’s Law Center and help us resist this takeover of our courts.

Sincerely,

have you watched the new video?

Watch the new video:

Paul Ryan and his allies have made it perfectly clear they don’t care about us anymore. After giving the top 1% another massive tax cut at our expense, Ryan now wants to decimate Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. And it’s not even a surprise.

If we defeat Paul Ryan and swing the massive arm of change back toward working people, even a little, it will be worth the fight. This is why we’re going to win, and it’s what separates us from the other side: We care about everybody — and they don’t.

Watch the new video, share it with a friend, and chip in to help Randy Bryce repeal and replace Paul Ryan.

60 things ~ sierraclub.org

Explore. Enjoy. Protect.

The Trump administration has been unrelenting in its attacks on public lands, clean air and water, threatened wildlife, and climate change policies. I’m not lying when I say this is the worst year I’ve seen since I’ve been at the Sierra Club. How bad has this year been? Here are 60 horrible things they’ve done in the last 12 months:

29 rules overturned 24 rollbacks in progress

7 rollbacks in limbo

It’s almost too much to comprehend. We fought back, hard, this year — and we’re going to keep fighting in 2018. We’re mobilizing our grassroots, heading to Capitol Hill, and joining with groups across the country to protect our public lands, vulnerable communities, and clean air and water.

But to do that we need your support. And if you renew your support right now, a group of generous donors will MATCH your first gift up to $250,000. But only for a limited time.

Thank you for all you do,

Michael Brune

We are Working Washington

If spiders worked together...

So sure it’s a little bit of an icky starting place. But if spiders have the capacity to eat all the humans in a year if they just got organized, can you imagine what workers could accomplish if we all worked together?

Well that’s what Working Washington is all about. And there’s nobody else around that does what we do, arachnid or primate.

Don’t get me wrong, I know there are a lot of good organizations out there that do a lot of good work and send out a lot of emails too. Especially this time of year.

But nobody else is building worker power in the fields and packing houses of the Yakima Valley. Nobody else is bringing nannies and house cleaners together to campaign for a breakthrough domestic workers bill of rights. Nobody else is holding businesses accountable for misleading minimum wage surcharges and changing the conversation about wealth, inequality, and the value of work.

Nobody else has racked up anything like our record of breakthrough victories that transform the working lives of hundreds of thousands of people at a time and spark nationwide change.

And I bet nobody else compared you to a spider, either.

But make no mistake: we may like our spider metaphors but we’re about more than sitting on tuffets and climbing up water-spouts over here. Working Washington fast food strikers sparked the fight that won Seattle’s first-in-the-nation $15 minimum wage. Working Washington baristas led the successful campaign for secure scheduling in Seattle, and our members across the state helped drive forward Initiative 1433 to raise the minimum wage and provide paid sick days. We successfully moved Amazon to sever ties with the right-wing lobby group ALEC and improve conditions in their sweatshop warehouses, and got Starbucks to address inequities in their corporate parental leave policy. And we made history once again with the landmark statewide paid family leave law that passed earlier this year.

Help us continue to build power for workers across the state: join us by making an end-of-year contribution to Working Washington today.

Thanks,

Sage, Working Washington

P.S. No, you probably don’t need to google exterminators, it’ll be ok.
