a message from … Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader

For more than five months, House Republicans have tried to impose their radical, right-wing agenda on the American people. Just a few weeks ago they introduced a bill to dismantle Social Security just after they voted to end Medicare.

Now is our chance to respond. For the actions you make today can directly impact Democrats‘ chances in 2012.

On June 30th, we’ll face the first Federal Election Commission (FEC) quarterly filing deadline since the Republicans’ shameful vote to end Medicare while protecting tax breaks for the wealthy and Big Oil. The political world will use the grassroots fundraising numbers we report as a measure of Democrats and President Obama’s momentum for 2012.

A contribution today will not only help us to have a strong showing — it can also be put to work immediately to help us expose Republican congressmen and congresswomen back in their districts. This deadline is so important that if you give a gift today, my House colleagues will match it with a gift of their own dollar-for-dollar.

Contribute $3 or more today and my fellow House Democrats will match every dollar you give with one of their own, doubling your impact.

We cannot get distracted by Republican attacks. We must stay focused on recapturing the Majority in the House and electing President Obama in 2012. That’s why I’ve set a goal of raising $1 Million to show the world that we have the grassroots strength to take on the Tea Party Republican fringe and their secret donor-funded attack groups.

Together we can win and show the world Democrats are united behind President Obama’s agenda and have the strength to win the House Majority. Please contribute today.

Thank you. Nancy Pelosi
Democratic Leader

P.S. Shady right-wing outside groups are already gearing up with their secret money to wage misleading attacks against Democrats. We have just 12 days to exceed our $1 Million grassroots goal to show the world that Democrats are strong, united and on the path to winning the Majority. Contribute Now.

Republicans Vs Democrats – the choice is obvious

In 2010, Anthony Weiner spoke up and out against the Republican Tea Parties attack on Medicare.

It is now a fight against, in my opinion a change in how Americans live by enforcing Republican tea Party ideology or that “Family Values Platform”.  If you believe in equality for all Americans, you must support those members of Congress who not only fight back but also realized early that the Republican agenda is to eliminate not only Government Jobs but also Government Services of all kinds. Republicans stated repeatedly their interest in JOBs, JOBs, JOBs and the Economy but the agenda and the mission of all Republican Governors is much more sinister. It has become more clear what side of the Political aisle is doing their job for Americans  not those that back that top 2% they feel are job creators. The notion is great on the surface and yes there has been an increase in private sector jobs but we are still suffering and Speaker Boehner has yet to offer up any JOBs Bills at all. However, it is not lost on me that good legislation that could have moved us into the black sooner has been filibustered for the last 2.5 years. The Republican Tea Parties engagement in deception and lies will continue if we let them  and all things being equal or in our case completely unequal, it will also include a big splash of Political double standards.

We must all speak up and out to save what Republicans call entitlements from privatization and or elimination, which btw affects Republican constituents as well, Fox faux viewers. While it is true that Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security may need to be updated in order to get rid of waste and fraud. These are Government run services that actually help Americans, which is what we as Americans supposedly support on a whole and are all about but given the opportunity, the Republican Tea Party will flip it and put that trickledown theory in full effect and we will all wonder what happened to our America, as we all once knew it.

Original Message:

Dear People For Supporter,

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, already in hot water over failing to report his wife’s income on judicial disclosure forms, is now being called on by 74 members of Congress, led by Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York, to recuse himself from hearing cases on the health care reform law.

It’s really pretty simple. Justice Thomas’ wife Ginni has earned hundreds of thousands of dollars working for and leading groups that have repealing health care reform as one of their chief goals. And considering challenges to the health car law are expected to make it to the Supreme Court, how could that not be a major conflict of interest?

Rep. Weiner and his colleagues are absolutely correct that Justice Thomas should recuse himself.

Challenges to the health care reform law have been largely unsuccessful, but two judges have ruled at least one part of the bill unconstitutional, making it very likely that the challenge will make its way to the Supreme Court.

The court challenges to health care reform are really more political than legal, and the tortured logic used by the judges who have ruled it unconstitutional ignores the text and history of our Constitution, as well as firmly established case law going back to the Supreme Court of the early 1800s. Despite right-wing Supreme Court justices’ willingness to contort the law to suit their ideology – see the their controversial decisions in Bush v. Gore and Citizens United v. FEC, both of which had Justice Thomas in the majority – most legal experts agree that the health care reform law is perfectly constitutional and under no real threat of being ruled otherwise. But outcomes aside, the Thomas family’s profits from efforts to repeal health care reform clearly mean that Justice Thomas should not hear and decide cases about that law.

Ginni Thomas is now a lobbyist, advertising herself to potential clients interested in health care reform as someone with the “experience and connections” to get the job done. Justice Clarence Thomas should honor his office by acknowledge this obvious conflict of interest and recusing himself.

Don’t wait another minute to speak up — add your name to Rep. Weiner’s letter now. www.pfaw.org

Here’s the text of the letter:

Dear Justice Thomas:

As an Associate Justice, you are entrusted with the responsibility to exercise the highest degree of discretion and impartiality when deciding a case. As Members of Congress, we were surprised by recent revelations of your financial ties to leading organizations dedicated to lobbying against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. We write today to respectfully ask that you maintain the integrity of this court and recuse yourself from any deliberations on the constitutionality of this act.

The appearance of a conflict of interest merits recusal under federal law. From what we have already seen, the line between your impartiality and you and your wife’s financial stake in the overturn of health care reform is blurred. Your spouse is advertising herself as a lobbyist who has “experience and connections and appeals to clients who want a particular decision — they want to overturn health care reform. Moreover, your failure to disclose Ginny Thomas‘s receipt of $686,589 from the Heritage Foundation, a prominent opponent of health care reform, between 2003 and 2007 has raised great concern.

This is not the first case where your impartiality was in question. As Common Cause points out, you participated in secretive political strategy sessions, perhaps while the case was pending, with corporate leaders whose political aims were advanced by the [5-4] decision on the Citizens United case. Your spouse also received an undisclosed salary paid for by undisclosed donors as CEO of Liberty Central, a 501(c)(4) organization that stood to benefit from the decision and played an active role in the 2010 elections.

Given these facts, there is a strong conflict between the Thomas household’s financial gain through your spouse’s activities and your role as a Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. We urge you to recuse yourself from this case. If the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision is to be viewed as legitimate by the American people, this is the only correct path.

We appreciate your thoughtful consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

ANTHONY D. WEINER

Tell Clarence Thomas: Recuse yourself

A case challenging the constitutionality of the health care reform bill passed by Congress is headed to the Supreme Court, and Justice Clarence Thomas has a supreme ethical conflict.

It’s been widely reported that the Thomas family has financial ties to the conservative organizations leading the campaign to bring down our new health care law — the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Rep. Anthony Weiner and 73 other members of Congress have signed a letter detailing the appearance of ethical conflict and asking Justice Thomas to recuse himself from deliberations on the constitutionality of health care reform.

We’re asking you to sign a companion letter that Rep. Weiner — a champion of progressive issues — will deliver to the Supreme Court along with the letter signed by members of Congress.

Thomas failed to disclose that his wife Ginni Thomas received a total of $686,589 in compensation from the Heritage Foundation.1 Furthermore his wife is currently advertising herself as a lobbyist who has “experience and connections” to conservative groups who have an explicit agenda to overturn health care reform — by repeal in the Congress or overturning the law in the courts.2

Justice Thomas is no stranger to questions of ethics. Along with Justice Antonin Scalia he attended meetings organized by the secretive, Tea Party-funding billionaire Koch brothers. The Koch brothers have been key players in rewriting the political landscape after the Citizens United Supreme Court decision unleashed the floodgates of corporate money in federal politics.3 And Thomas’ wife has received an undisclosed salary paid for by undisclosed donors as CEO of Liberty Central, a 501(c)(4) organization that was formed to take advantage of Citizens United rules and to play an active role in the 2010 elections.

Unlike other members of the federal judiciary, Supreme Court Justices have no specific code of ethics to which they may be held accountable. But there is a clear appearance of a conflict of interest between his wife’s clear financial stake in overturning the health care law and Justice Thomas’ personal duty to exhibit the highest degree of discretion and impartiality. To protect the honor of the highest court in the land, Thomas must recuse himself from deliberations on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

mashup Monday & some News …

Today, President Obama signed the childhood nutrition bill -very good news.
I have received a lot of petitions to oppose the deal President Obama was able to get done within hours unlike you all in Congress who seemed more worried about the Midterms. He is fighting for the Middle Class because we do not have time for all your principled conversations and or ugly debates. What we need is action now but  Congress does not seem any closer than they were before the Midterms. On the other hand our President and his admin was able to get a deal helping those in need. I want Rep.Weiner to know we all know that the House passed most if not all the bills on the calendar but those same bills died in the Senate and will continue to do if people cannot accept the word compromise and fight to keep the Democratic Party in power by getting more on the floor of Congress.

I do not agree with the choices I am being asked to make; it seems to be  one side or the other and in my mind the people of America need help -that is who Americans are about, so if i have to make a choice it is to help Americans.  If changes can be made to the deal made that might be a good thing but the quickness by which so many in the Democratic Party turned on President Obama did not sit well with me and many other people i know and we won’t stand for it. I think past President’s not only had the support of their own Party. I now wonder is that still true because i don’t see it. I see a group of progressives and yes i call some of them the “Professional Left” seem to be waiting for this President to fail, make a mistake and or say he was for something when in fact he was not. The votes were not there 20 months ago they still are not there and now look where we are just a couple of weeks before the hammer comes down. I want folks like adam greene the net roots, jane hamsher, ed shultz, bill press and others who have money to stop the BS and look for the compromise that will help get Americans back on track. The BS I and many others are talking about are of this President being weak, not strong, not fighting or does not stand up enough is total BS. I watched the HCR debate and or negotiations and it was not pretty. I blame Congress for being distracted by the midterms. I will say that not all Americans agree with what you are doing Rep.Weiner you don’t speak for me and  i don’t appreciate you hoping from station to station bad mouthing this President or that it is bad decision because it might be the only choice that is, if you are just as worried about the alternative like our President- People first. I am having a hard time feeling this group like you seem to be the enemy not the support we need. The Democratic Party or mostly progressives and liberals need to stop having tantrums and place the blame where it really belongs which is the Republicans and our own Democratic Party that did not get the job done before the Midterm elections and if anyone thinks Anthony Wiener has my support after getting on every cable station with his BS he is incredibly mistaken. It was time to unite in solidarity instead we saw our own Party put off votes, scale bills down ignore what the President asked for and worried about their campaigns. I was pissed then and i am still pissed that not only did the calendar seem hastily done but absolutely no strategy to get the House bills taken care of by the Senate -one chamber was gone the other in session and stacks and stacks of bills waiting to be addressed.

I blame what I call the Republican Tea Party for the lack of improvement of our economy but i will be damned to say the deal is bad when our own party couldn’t get it done and if you paid attention this deal is not just a compromise bro it is a stimulus package 2.0 with some items that clearly need to be changed and even President Obama said this, yet this too was ignored. It makes me wonder do they all even talk or is this a planned move because i know meetings between the President and our Democratic party have happened it begs the question of what is going on. I give Props to Senator Sanders for making the filibuster go National TV style because i truly believe “the Media” has quashed the President’s and the Democratic Parties Message but i am offended by his comments of my President and will continue to support President Obama. I am all for constructive criticism but what has been happening is much more than that and i intend to fight the move from the Professional left to Primary President Obama because of this latest move toward the 21st Century.

I expect more from our Congress. We had a 85million dollar JOBS bill that got scaled down to 15million; bills that died or bills that the RTP cleverly added lewd Amendments to that no one would vote for thus killing real change.
I suggest people on the left remember that stuff -not getting the job done stands out for me, ask someone how long did it take our President to negotiate and possibly keep some people in their homes, food, and or the ability to pay for some bills? The speeches only do some much when you need to pay for your meds like Seniors do.

The action by Senator Sanders on the floor of Congress was commendable but too late in my opinion and most if not all Americans would like to know why this did not happen before the Mid-term elections. I still am trying to figure out how we lost so much if you and the other mobilizers were getting the vote out – only 4.7% of Blacks voted -some call Low information voters, women and gays actually leaned right and look where that got us …whose fault is that?
This letter is written out of frustration because i just don’t believe the debate, speeches and negotiations will help. They are a waste of time when there are so many other things that need to get passed before the new Congress convenes -I am a voter and i want a compromise with folks working behind the scenes on what can be done about the parts that are awful but worth the compromise because it will help millions –
