Hello Activists,

We just released a new video entitled: “Because it’s Time to End the Afghanistan War”

With violence in Afghanistan still worsening a year after the military push into Marjah–the start of what some call “Obama‘s War”–it’s clear military solutions won’t work. It’s time to end the war. We want people to share why they oppose the war for a chance to appear in an upcoming Rethink Afghanistan video.

Help us spread the word so that people watch our video and leave a comment on our Rethink Afghanistan wall. Here is how we need you to share:

A Pentagon official recently made a statement saying that if alive, Dr. King might support the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This is simply not true. Dr. King denounced war as an “enemy of the poor” and called for peace.

Slavery at the Super Bowl


 Tell the Super Bowl Host Committee: Don’t be a bystander to child trafficking

Every year, children as young as 11 are trafficked involuntarily to Super Bowl cities. There, football fans – usually men, often inebriated – will pay traffickers to have sex with them.

The Texas Attorney General estimates these kids have a life expectancy of just seven years from the time they’re first trafficked.

This year, the Super Bowl Host Committee is charged “to engage in responsible planning . . . to ensure the readiness of North Texas to host the first Super Bowl in the Cowboys’ new stadium.”

Local anti-trafficking groups have repeatedly offered to help the Committee use its influence to educate fans and the public about the dangers of child trafficking — which could help to prevent thousands of rapes and abuses at America‘s biggest sporting event.

But the Host Committee has refused to take meaningful action. And thousands of children will pay the price.

Tell the 2011 Super Bowl Host Committee to take a stand against child trafficking.

In Dallas, a terrific local organization called Traffick911 has created the “I’m Not Buying It” campaign. They’ve offered the Host Committee free PSAs, posters, banners and informational cards to educate the public and protect children from being abused and raped.

But the Host Committee refuses to display the information.

The Committee is working hard right now to generate good publicity for North Texas and the game, so public pressure at this moment will be especially powerful.

Tell the Super Bowl Host Committee that they have a responsibility to protect the children who’ll be trafficked to Texas for the Super Bowl:

Tell the Mirage to stop its cruel mistreatment of dolphins

The dolphins are trapped in a concrete pool next to a highway. They breathe in fumes and smog day after day. There’s no protection from the desert heat or the winter snow. Seventy-five percent die prematurely.

This is the horrifying existence of the dolphins at The Mirage Hotel and Casino’s “Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat.” Imprisoned in pools that are too shallow and too small, they’re forced to do mindless tricks for high-paying guests day after day – until they develop respiratory infections and diseases that claim their lives.

No creature should be treated this way.

Animal protection organizations have appealed to the National Marine Fisheries Service to deny The Mirage’s requests for more dolphins, but as more and more dolphins die — the death count is now at 14 — the Mirage keeps “restocking” its exhibit.

This isn’t the first time The Mirage has faced criticism for its reprehensible treatment of animals. In the past, The Mirage housed tigers in the building — but due to large opposition from the public, the casino is now tiger-free.

This set a clear precedent: If The Mirage believes the public fallout will be worse than the profits it makes from its mistreated animals, it will stop its despicable behavior.

Together, we can build the pressure needed to free The Mirage’s dolphins. Sign this petition today to tell The Mirage to stop imprisoning, mistreating, and causing the deaths of dolphins:

While we may never know what exactly motivated the shooter in Arizona—and while there are many lessons to draw from this tragedy—one thing is clear: Our country must turn away from the culture of violent, hateful rhetoric that has been pervading our political discourse for too long.

The tragedy in Tucson has shaken us all to the core. Facts are still coming in, and we all must be careful not to jump to premature conclusions.

But in the wake of this disaster one thing is clear: We must put an end to the rhetoric of violence and hate that has exploded in America over the past two years.

We don’t know what motivated the individual or individuals who committed this atrocity. And, if reports are true, it’s deeply troubling that the suspected shooter displayed so many signs of serious mental illness, and our public health institutions failed to respond.1

But the terrifying fact is that this act of violence falls into a pattern that has emerged over the past two years in America and in Gabrielle Giffords’ district in particular.

Windows were smashed at Representative Giffords’ district office last March just a few hours after the House vote on health care reform.2 At one of the infamous town hall events in August 2009, a man attending the event accidentally dropped a handgun on the floor that he had been hiding under his arm.3

And violent tendencies have been inflamed by the careless and irresponsible rhetoric of certain political leaders. Sarah Palin‘s infamous “target list” displayed Democratic districts, including Rep. Giffords’, in crosshairs, as if viewed through a gunsight.4

In addition, violent imagery was prominently featured during the last election. For instance, a rally for Rep. Giffords’ Republican opponent, Jesse Kelly, was promoted with the following notice: “Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M15 with Jesse Kelly.”5

As Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, speaking from the heart at an emotional news conference last night, said:

There’s reason to believe that this individual may have a mental issue. And I think people who are unbalanced are especially susceptible to vitriol… When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous.6
