The world’s poorest communities need trees.

Every time we do a tree-planting, I hear  back from local residents, who tell us how the trees we’ve planted have helped  them provide for their families and have allowed them to live happier and  healthier lives.

They’re really thanking YOU, our generous  supporters. But our work is not done yet.

For every dollar you donate, we’ll plant one more  tree.

Trees provide food, energy and income, helping  communities to achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability.  Trees also filter the air and help stave off the effects of climate change.

With your generous donation, you can improve the lives of  some of the world’s most vulnerable citizens.

Last year, Earth Day Network made an  important commitment to the Global Poverty Project to plant 10 million trees in impoverished areas  around the world over the next five years.

We need your help to meet our goal. Please  consider contributing to this critical effort today.

Associate Director of Earth Day, Earth Day  Network

P.S.  Thanks to our partners at WeWood, there’s a special new opportunity to support  The Canopy Project. You’ll receive a gift you’ll love!

In Memory

visitors-memorials-eve

I was looking to see what if anything had I written or posted for Memorial Day about family  … an in  Memory of and saw something from 2011

… of course the day is full of Memorial Events and some unforgettable programs to see, but as we channel surfed it also included a stop at HGTV  who teamed up with Change the World; a collaborative organization that helps Vets renovate existing housing that provides housing and education to Vets in the community; made me think about my brother, a vet who struggled with all that comes from serving and then …

what a surprise to see my cousin giving up his NFL jersey to Hence, who is doing great things in his community by providing veterans a place to stay, rest, think and move on to better things after coming back from War.

It is a great  find from 2011, reminder and an in memory of my bro and ALL those who took an oath to protect and serve since  … we thank you

Oh and this disclaimer … I do not know if the organization Change the World still exists or is working with HGTV …

April 22, 2012 – Join us to Mobilize the Earth

At the recent United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 17) in Durban, South Africa, world leaders punted once again. Instead of taking meaningful action on climate change today, they put off creation of a global emission treaty until 2020 — a commitment few believe will be honored without massive public intervention. Anticipating this failure, Earth Day Network and our global partners, including Tck Tck Tck, met in Durban to develop a plan for global action in advance of the next major meeting of world leaders at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June.

Our plan calls for using Earth Day as a springboard to pressure world leaders. We will organize a global coalition of environmental, faith based, and human rights groups that together with nascent movement building organizations will take action on Earth Day, April 22nd 2012 and Mobilize the Earth™. Together we will demand immediate action to reverse the damage of climate change and other environmental tragedies. Stay tuned for details to come shortly on how you too can Mobilize the Earth™!

Other News:

Mayors and local elected officials from around the world did make history by joining together to sign the Durban Adaptation Charter for Local Governments, requiring cities to increase their mitigation and adaptation efforts immediately. (Read more about the Charter at the Earth Day Network blog)

On December 5th, Earth Day Network, in partnership with National Religious Coalition of Creation Care (NRCCC), hosted an event in Durban where Ela Ghandi and other prominent women faith leaders spoke about the importance of women’s voices in the environmental movement and the need for simple solutions to address carbon emissions. Together, Earth Day Network and NRCCC will continue to encourage faith communities to implement sustainable initiatives in their everyday lives and places of worship.

Take our quiz: What century are they from? a message from Marissa Graciosa

History is repeating itself

Can you tell the difference?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! They say today everyone is a little bit Irish.

It wasn’t always like that, though. When the Irish first came to America they were met with persecution, ignorance and fear. They were denied jobs, accused of lawlessness and of destroying the United States. Immigration became a rallying point for the Know-Nothings, a political party dedicated to punishing immigrants.

Flash forward to today. Hispanic immigrants are facing the same accusations and the same injustices. History is repeating itself, right in front of us. In fact, it’s getting impossible to tell the difference between rhetoric from the historical Know-Nothings and today’s Republican Party.

Take the quiz: Can you tell the difference?   http://act.reformimmigrationforamerica.org/go/1190?akid=652.164689.coTnOf&t=6

See if you can tell the difference between the historical Know-Nothings and today’s modern ones. Then, take action and tell some of the House’s most extreme right wing restrictionist voices not to keep repeating history. We need constructive solutions, not repackaged racism and xenophobia.

Thank you,

Marissa Graciosa
