The stakes for clean air, clean water, and clean energy jobs …


Here’s something Mitt Romney actually joked about with pride — and plenty of scorn — while formally accepting the Republican nomination for president of the United States:

“President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet.”

And the crowd went wild.

It is nothing short of terrifying to imagine a party that openly mocks climate change taking back the White House.

The contrast between our candidate and theirs couldn’t be any clearer.

President Obama has more than doubled the amount of electricity we get from wind and solar over his first term — and his plans for wind power are expected to help grow the wind industry to support 100,000 jobs by 2016. Both Romney and Ryan want to kill the wind production tax credit, which could come at the expense of 37,000 American jobs. Oh, but they would keep giving $4 billion in tax breaks to Big Oil every single year.

And just this week, while President Obama’s administration finalized historic fuel economy standards to double our vehicles’ mileage by 2025 and cut carbon pollution from vehicles in half, the GOP adopted a platform that could kill investments in clean energy, and calls on Congress to prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations.

Surprise, surprise — according to the Los Angeles Times, the platform “was written at the direction of the Romney campaign,” making it heavily influenced by Big Oil interests.

So there you have it — the stakes for clean air, clean water, and clean energy jobs couldn’t be higher. Make sure your friends and family know what we’re fighting for:

It’s crazy, but right now, our governments give nearly $1 trillion a year of our taxpayer money to Big Oil and Coal to destroy our planet. The only reason we shovel cash into the coffers of Big Oil is their lobbyists have a stranglehold on our governments. But if we demand that our leaders green our tax-money, we’ll increase total global green investment by 400% making solar and wind energy cheaper than oil and coal — in the process saving the planet by putting Big Oil out of business!

We’re rapidly reaching a point of no return on climate change and a treaty to prevent catastrophe is years off. Fortunately, momentum behind this new planet saving plan is building. Massachusetts Ranks No.1 in Energy Efficiency

was named the most energy efficient state in the country, according to a
report from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

Massachusetts has been declared the most energy efficient state in
the nation, knocking California out of the No. 1 position for the first
time in four years, according to a national scorecard that ranks states’
energy efficiency programs.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy released its fifth annual State Energy Efficiency Scorecard
last week. While Massachusetts garnered the top spot for the first
time, the Golden State slipped to second place, after holding the top
position for the first four editions of the scorecard.

“Massachusetts regulators have sent a very consistent message
that they want to ramp up their energy-efficiency programs. California
has been staying even, and Massachusetts has been flooring it,” Steven
Nadel, the Council’s executive director, told the Los Angeles Times.

Next year, Massachusetts is on track to reduce its electricity demand
by 2.4 percent, the newspaper reported, while California will cut its
demand by 1 percent.

Rounding out the top 10 most energy-efficiency states were New York,
Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Connecticut and
Maryland, which made its first appearance in the top 10 this year.

The 10 states most in need of improvement were, starting in last
place, North Dakota, Wyoming, Mississippi, Kansas, Oklahoma, South
Carolina, West Virginia, Missouri, Alabama and South Dakota.

The six most improved states included Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Alabama, Maryland, and Tennessee.

Michael Sciortino, the report’s lead author, said states can use
energy efficiency as a strategy to generate cost savings, promote
technological innovation and stimulate economic growth, even during a
recession.

“Clearly, 2011 has not been kind to our economy, but energy
efficiency remains a growth sector that attracts investment and creates
jobs,” he said in a statement.

To draw up its annual scorecard, the Council analyzed states’ energy
efficiency programs and policies in the residential, commercial,
industrial and transportation sectors, including utility programs,
transportation policies, building energy codes, state government
initiatives and appliance energy standards.

IKEA’s dangerous little secret


In Sweden, IKEA‘s factory workers are paid $19 per hour and get five weeks of paid vacation every year. In America? Not so much.

IKEA’s Swedwood plant in Danville, Virginia is the most dangerous plant in the wood furniture industry — workers there have suffered more than 1,536 days of lost work due to accidents on the job in a 30-month period. According to the LA Times, IKEA’s Danville workers are paid as little as $8 an hour and face racial discrimination from their managers. Workers often find out on Friday night that they’ll be forced to work for the entire weekend — and if they can’t make it, they face disciplinary action.

In Sweden, IKEA’s factory workers are unionized, which is one reason they receive better wages and have a safer workplace — but the company is going all out to prevent American workers from receiving those same rights and protections. Please sign the petition to tell IKEA to give its American workers the freedom to organize.

The workers in Danville have filed for an election to start a union of their own — the election could come as soon as six weeks from now. But rather than pay its workers fair wages, Swedwood pays the notorious union-busting firm Jackson Lewis thousands of dollars a day to hold mandatory “captive audience meetings” with the Danville workers. At these meetings, the Jackson Lewis associates inundate the workers with anti-union propaganda and veiled threats that are backed up with random firings.

Here’s the good news: The publicity surrounding this organizing drive has already made a difference — last month, Swedwood announced that Danville workers would no longer be forced to work mandatory overtime. But Liz Cattaneo of American Rights at Work stresses that continued public pressure is extremely important: “If IKEA thinks the public isn’t paying attention, they’re going to play hardball … throughout the election process — which could mean more firings and more union busting.”

Now that the workers have filed for a union election, you can bet IKEA will redouble its efforts to squash their rights. They need our support now more than ever.

fire “Follow the Money” host Eric Bolling


Since Tuesday, more than 65,000 people have signed onto a petition calling on Fox Business Network Chairman Roger Ailes to fire “Follow the Money” host Eric Bolling for his race-baiting comments targeting President Obama.  Will you join us? Your voice can make a real difference.

The response has been tremendous, and major media are covering the campaign.1 Clearly Bolling and Fox are feeling the heat. Bolling issued a weak pseudo-apology earlier this week saying that he had gotten, “a little fast and loose with the language.” But his “apology” was disingenuous, as the offensive material was obviously scripted and premeditated.2

Which is why we’re keeping the pressure on. We plan to deliver the petitions to Fox Business chief Roger Ailes soon. Can you help us get to 80,000 before we do?
