Redefining rape? a repost and reminder

when you vote! #VoteBlueToSaveYourRights

Dear MoveOn member,

Think “no” means “no”?

Well, 173 members of Congress don’t.

A far-reaching anti-choice bill, introduced by Republican Chris Smith and supported by 173 members of the House, includes a provision that could redefine rape and set women’s rights back by decades.1

Right now, federal dollars can’t be used for abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or when the woman’s life is in danger.

But according to the New York Times, the Smith bill would narrow that use to “cases of ‘forcible’ rape but not statutory or coerced rape.”2 This could mean cases where women are “drugged or given excessive amounts of alcohol, rapes of women with limited mental capacity, and many date rapes” would no longer count as rape.3

As far too many women know, bruises and broken bones do not define rape—a lack of consent does. The Smith bill is scary. And with 173 supporters it already has a frightening chance of passage—unless the public speaks up right away with an outcry that can’t be ignored.

Can you sign the petition to Congress today, demanding they oppose the sexist, anti-choice Smith bill? >> http://pol.moveon.org

Federal funds are already severely restricted when it comes to reproductive rights and women’s health care, a situation that ends up hurting lower-income women in particular, who tend to use federally-funded services more often than wealthy women. The last thing we ought to be doing is legislating to make these laws more stringent.

In addition, the Smith bill is full of dangerous anti-choice provisions as well as the rape redefinition. Called “Stupak on Steroids” by NARAL Pro-Choice America in reference to Rep. Bart Stupak‘s failed attempt to push stringent restrictions on insurance coverage for abortion during the health care debate, it would “force millions of American families to pay more taxes if their health plan covers abortion care, jeopardizing abortion coverage in the private market.”4

The Smith bill is just the first of many attacks on women’s rights to come in the new GOP-controlled House.5 If it moves forward, it would set an incredibly dangerous precedent for GOP action in the House for the next two years.

Can you sign the petition asking Congress to denounce the Smith bill to redefine rape?

Defeat :::::: Anti Woman Agenda :::::::: a repost from 2013

NARAL Pro-Choice America

Want to know the kind of world we live in? We live in a world where extremist groups actually brag about becoming a “political machine” to be able to more effectively marginalize and actually endanger women who don’t agree with them.

The Susan B. Anthony List is one such group. And this organization is raising millions of dollars to test its power in Virginia’s 2013 gubernatorial race — with the intention of electing a slate of anti-woman candidates in 2014. And we know this will only lead to even more horrific state-level anti-choice laws in states across the country.

We have to match them dollar for dollar  to protect women, to protect choice, and to protect our constitutional freedom. Will you help us stand up to the SBA List and other anti-choice organizations like them?

SBA List’s positions are like a greatest-hits collection of anti-choice, anti-woman zealotry. They’ve called Todd Akin “an excellent partner.” They said they supported former Senate candidate Richard Mourdock’s comments about pregnancy from rape that “life is always a gift from God.” They even defended Virginia’s forced ultrasound bill.

The SBA List is raising millions of dollars to elect a governor in Virginia who will try to pass even more extreme laws. And it’s coming for states across the country.

I’m trying to stop them. Will you help me stop them, and protect choice at all levels?

UPDATE: Abortion ban subcommittee hearing today

NARAL Pro-Choice America

20 Week Abortion ban gets Congressional Hearing

Today, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) is holding a hearing in his subcommittee on legislation that would take away women’s constitutional rights and put women across America in danger.

Ironically, Franks‘ panel is called the “Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice,” neither of which Mr. Franks seems very interested in using to protect women.Womenshc

This is incredibly dangerous legislation. It’s a blatant attempt to roll back a woman’s right to choose. We need to fight it every step of the way. People need to know this is happening. People need to know what’s in store if these anti-choice zealots have their way.

Please make an emergency gift to stand against this bill and to stand up for women.keepabortionlegal

Yesterday, the radical anti-choice group Susan B. Anthony List stood with Rep. Franks and declared their support for this terrible bill. Anti-choice activists want to drag us back to the days when abortion was illegal and desperate women had nowhere to turn. I won’t go back. Will you?

Every 11 hours

NARAL Pro-Choice America

Ilyse G. Hogue President, NARAL Pro-Choice America

Every 11 hours we move closer and closer to a world without the rights we’ve fought so hard to preserve.

That’s because every 11 hours, another piece of anti-choice legislation is introduced somewhere in America. Nearly 300 anti-choice legislative attacks have been introduced in Congress and in states across the country this year — and the year isn’t even half over. That’s more than two anti-choice bills for every single day of the year so far.

But, before the next anti-choice legislative attack is introduced, you have time to make a difference by helping NARAL Pro-Choice America track and defeat anti-choice legislation — protecting women’s reproductive rights across the country.

Please make an urgent contribution to NARAL Pro-Choice America before another 11 hours pass.

We’re watching every single one of these legislative attacks. We’re fighting them in Congress. We’re fighting them in the states. We’re fighting for women. But the clock is ticking.

Before extreme anti-choice politicians have time to make another move, please stand with us.

Together, we can make choice real for all women. Are you with us? Tick, tock, tick, tock …

Have You had enough

NARAL Pro-Choice America

I can’t believe it’s 2013.  Judging by the latest slew of anti-choice laws being passed in the states right now, you might think it was 1973 all over again.

It’s dangerous right now for women. In Kansas, Arkansas, North Dakota and other states across the country, women are at risk of losing their constitutional right to choose. That is why we are launching a hard-hitting campaign to stop the onslaught of abortion bans nationwide.

We need you with us today, standing strong, and sending a clear message to anti-choice forces that they can’t get away with this. Will you make a generous donation right now?

Women in all 50 states are counting on you and me to be their voice.

Friends, NARAL Pro-Choice America can’t be the watchful eye for women alone.  We need you with us right now.

We’re going to stand up and let politicians know that they can’t strip women of their rights without hearing from millions of us across America. They think they can pass these laws and we won’t notice? They think they can take away women’s reproductive rights and nobody will lift a finger to stop them?

Well you know what?  I’ve had enough.  And I’m sure you have too. We have to stand together and stop these attacks.

Are you with me? Please make a generous donation right now.

Together we can help make choice real for all women,

Ilyse G. Hogue
