Could You Survive?

Brave New FilmsFACT: In January 2014, 13 states raised their minimum wage; since then these states added more jobs and have lower unemployment rates than the 36 states that did not raise the minimum wage.

FACT: The U.S. Government could save $7 billion dollars if companies just paid employees a higher minimum wage.*

FACT: Federal minimum wage is $7.25 – and some states actually have a lower state wage of $6.25 an hour.

How can anyone, alone or with a family, survive on minimum wage?

FACT: They can’t.

But together we are fighting to change this. In two weeks, states like Arkansas, Alaska, South Dakota, Nebraska and cities like Eureka and Oakland are casting their votes to raise the wage. And Brave New Films is continuing to expose the Koch brothers’ fight against increasing the minimum wage.

Millennials … Jessica Schumer, The White House

If you’re known as a “Millennial,” you’re a child of the digital age. You’ve traded in dial-up for wi-fi, nighttime dramas for Netflix, and DVDs (or even VHS tapes) for downloads. You still haven’t given up on vinyl.

But what many don’t realize is that “Millennials” — the tech-savvy, innovative generation that we are — are also already making an impact on our country’s future.

The White House Council of Economic Advisers just finished a deep-dive into the Millennial generation to paint a picture of who we are, the challenges we face, and the role we’ll play in building America’s 21st century economy.

Check out this infographic to get a good look at the Millennial generation and how we fit into America’s new economic foundation — then share it on social media:

This is an infographic about Millennials

Given the way many of us like to consume our news, here’s a breakdown of the key points from the report that you need to know — in list form, of course. (But if you’re old school, you can read the full report here.)

  1. We are now the largest, most diverse generation in the U.S.
  2. We’re shaped by technology, we value creativity, and we’re innovative (see also: Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr).
  3. More of us are going to college, especially women. But when you couple that with rising tuition, we are left with an ever-increasing share of the student loan debt burden.
  4. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, we are much more likely to have health insurance without being job-locked (which means we can pursue that start-up idea we keep telling people about).
  5. We are moving into urban areas and we’re paying rent. We’re less likely to own a home during our 20s than previous generations.

Coming of age during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression means that young Americans face certain obstacles on the path forward. But no generation is better equipped to overcome them.

That is why President Obama is championing policies that will help unleash the creative energy of young Americans so we can break into new sectors of our economy and develop new enterprises.

The President has increased support for higher education and is giving nearly 5 million Americans the chance to cap student loan payments at 10 percent of their income. He is pushing Congress to pass fair pay legislation and to raise the national minimum wage. He created initiatives to connect more Americans to the internet and empower innovation.

Whether acting with Congress or on his own where he can, the President will continue to invest in our teachers and schools, make education more affordable and accessible, build on our technology boom, expand health coverage and homeownership, and train every hardworking American with the skills they need to find a job they want.

So share this infographic or peruse the full report to get all 15 economic facts about the Millennial generation.

It’s a bit longer than 140 characters, but I think it’s worth the read.

Thanks,

Jess

BIG CHANGES to bus service beginning Sept 27 ~~ King County Metro

So, Prop1 failed and now the lives of folks who depend on Metro will forever change unless or until funds are found. The question most folks are asking is what happened to the $$ its citizens invested in Metro over the last few years, least we ask about the deal struck voted and passed between Republicans and Democrats to take away the free zone and make $$ which, was said to be a savings … we all remember what happened right … bus tickets for the homeless etc were provided for about a year …

…. Now, there are 28 routes eliminated and counting ? Nativegrl77

I’m a mom with a rare form of cancer. ~~~ Victory

On February 18, Florida Hospital Healthcare System agreed to cover Holly’s surgery in DC. Holly said “I just received word that Florida Hospital/FHHS has formally signed the agreement and that my surgery can proceed as normal. I can’t even begin to thank you enough for your support and willingness to share this petition to help make this happen. I’m in the process of developing a CaringBridge link where my family and caregivers can share my progress once I’m hospitalized. THANK YOU!!”

Florida Hospital/FHHS: Authorize a single case contract with Dr. Sugarbaker / Washington Hospital Center so I can have my lifesaving surgery

       By Holly Freuler

          St Cloud, Florida

My name is Holly Freuler. I am a 35 year old married mother of 2. I have a very rare form of cancer: Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma. Only 130 cases have been reported worldwide.
I was first treated for this cancer back in June of 2012. Unfortunately, my most recent CT scan indicated a recurrence of my disease.
This type of disease requires a specialized surgery (Cytoreductive Surgery with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). No doctor within my insurance network has ever treated a case like this before and no doctor performs the surgery necessary to save my life: Cytoreductive Surgery with HIPEC (open perfusion). My local surgeon who is considered, “in network” recognizes this fact and is also recommending I have surgery with Dr. Sugarbaker in Washington, D.C. He has stated that, “No one here can cure what you have. You need to go to Dr. Sugarbaker.”
Cytoreductive surgerywithHyperthermic Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is the standard treatment for my disease. There is NO alternative curative treatment.Itis approved by the FDA and my surgeon has a 90% survival rate at 5 years (well above the rest).

In 2012, my health insurer, Florida Hospital/FHHS, authorized the surgery with the same surgeon/hospital I am requesting now after I created a Change.org petition. Now, I need FHHS to authorize this treatment and sign a single case contract with Dr. Sugarbaker/Washington Hospital Center again. Since they have set a precedent of treatment and clearly agreed with the points I raised in my appeal in 2012, I hope they will authorize this treatment once again.
My surgeon’s office has been attempting to obtain authorization in a timely manner prior to my surgery date of February 26th, 2014. Unfortunately, they have been given incorrect fax numbers, claims of numerous lost received faxes, and other roadblocks preventing us from receiving the authorization.
I am proud to have been a Florida Hospital employee for 3 years. I’ve been a registered nurse for over 10 years.  Through my work not only as a registered nurse but also in Information Technology, I strive to provide the best solutions for our patients. It’s time for Florida Hospital to “extend the healing ministry of Christ” to one of their own employees: Me. They can do this by signing a single case contract to let me have my life saving surgery to cure me of cancer.
Please sign my petition and help me once again to convince Florida Hospital Healthcare System to give me the same chance at beating cancer as they did in 2012.
