Remove humane officer that shot kittens in front of children from his position

On June 10 in Lorain County, Ohio, North Ridgeville “Humane” Officer Barry Accorti responded to a call regarding a feral mother cat and her five kittens living in a woodpile in a homeowner‘s backyard. He told the homeowner that shelters were full and that the cats would be going to kitty heaven. He then pulled out his gun and shot to death the five 8 to 10 week-old kittens.

We are told that he discharged his gun approximately 15 feet from the backyard patio. Never did Officer Accorti let the woman know that he would be killing the kittens on site or that he would be firing a gun in her backyard. The woman ran into the house to shield her children who were screaming and crying. The mother cat is still alive.

Not only are there more humane ways to put down feral kittens, the poor judgement Accorti showed by firing a weapon in a backyard surrounded by other homes put people in danger. Allegedly Accorti told the woman that he isn’t suppose to do this, but it was justifiable.

I live in Lorain County and this is not the type of behavior or poor judgement we expect from our police officers. Our citizens are outraged that this happened yet Police Chief Mike Freeman has already cleared Accorti of any wrongdoing. We find that unacceptable. Officer Accorti should not continue his position as a humane officer with the North Ridgeville Police Department.

	Help us protect girls from sexual assault and bullying and continue other vital work with a generous donation.

When you see the news, it’s the same disturbing story. The four-letter word our friends, sisters and daughters face in school? Slut. Sometimes even after experiencing sexual violence. Here is the story of one Michigan high school student.
She was sexually assaulted at school in a soundproof band room by a star player on the basketball team and then felt discouraged by the principal from filing charges. The girl and her parents filed charges anyway. Despite an obligation under Title IX, which requires federally funded schools to ensure an environment free from sex-based discrimination, school officials took virtually no action. And the victim was subsequently subjected to intensive harassment and bullying by the assailant and other students — both at school and online.
The National Women’s Law Center has joined with a Michigan law firm to file a lawsuit in federal court to hold this school district accountable for its failure to adequately address the harassment and to send a nationwide message that sexual assault, bullying and harassment is never okay. Your help allows us to take on cases like this and continue our work to protect women and girls. Please donate $10 to support our work.
Sadly, this student is far from alone. Every two minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. As we’ve seen in Steubenville, Ohio and across the country, this problem is not going away. And often after a sexual assault, survivors are made to feel ashamed instead of supported.
The chilling message students are receiving from some schools is that they should remain silent in the face of sexual assault. It’s time to end that. Please donate $10 to support the Center’s work.

On a cold February day, people on the east coast put on top hats and tuxedos while Woodchuck weatherman Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, but as the days passed record warmth as well as tornadoes rain and winter storms interrupted the living caused the deaths of many.

No one really had to tell us but as meteors flew by en masse, several trained meteorologists set out to dash our hopes for an early spring in strange and wonderful ways. I have to say it seemed as if most laughed it off at first but as we slid into the first day of spring those weather people confirmed that we will indeed have two more weeks of cold weather. In fact, just days from rain a snowstorm made itself known on the first day of spring. It was is sunny and or hot in parts of the country, mostly on the left coast while others are getting up to 30 inches of snow reminding us not only of that natural disaster Katrina but that climate change is no joke . The winter cold snap is still plaguing the Mid-West and East Coast while spring like weather tries to break out on the West Coast as cold morning’s move into afternoon warmth that dips into lower temperatures when the evening rolls back around. I will say it again, talk about some useless prairie dogs ok, they are from the woodchuck, whistle pig, land and beaver family … whatever, Punxsutawney Phil was wrong !

My public high school threatened to suspend 20 students for wearing pro-gay t-shirts. Tell my school to stop discriminating and allow students to create a Gay-Straight Alliance.

The students at my high school need your help. I’m a 16-year-old junior at Celina High School — a public high school in northwest Ohio. We’re trying to make our school more accepting and safe for gay students, but the administration won’t let us.

Recently, 20 students tried to fight homophobia by wearing homemade t-shirts to school that said things like “Straight but Supportive” and “I Support [Rainbow].” Our Vice Principal told students that they had to stop wearing the shirts or face suspension.

I’m straight, but I think it’s wrong that my school is discriminating against gay students and suppressing students’ rights to express our opinions.

I started a petition on Change.org demanding that my school promote a more welcoming environment, including allowing students to create a Gay-Straight Alliance. Click here to add your name.

We all know that anti-gay bullying is a serious problem. In the past few years, we have seen so many kids tragically take their own lives because they were bullied for being gay or perceived to be gay.

I think it’s crazy that at my school, it’s not the kids doing the bullying. It’s the adults who are supposed to be our leaders and role models.

Well I’m not going to take it anymore. Other kids have gotten their schools to allow Gay-Straight Alliances after they started petitions on Change.org — I know that if enough people sign my petition, my school administrators will cease their shameful behavior and create an environment that is supportive for all students, not just straight ones.
