In the wake of January’s earthquake and an ongoing cholera outbreak, CARE has joined the people of Haiti this week in shifting attention to a third life-endangering threat: Hurricane Tomas.

In times of crisis, your support is urgently needed. A gift of $25, $50 or anything you can afford today can help us continue to provide our emergency relief and poverty-fighting programs in Haiti and 71 other countries around the world.

The hurricane made landfall in Haiti on Friday morning bringing howling winds and heavy rain that ripped roofs off of buildings, toppled power lines and caused rivers to burst their banks. The resulting floodwaters have swept into the tents and temporary shelters that 1.3 million Haitians call home.

To help Haitians prepare for the storm, CARE swiftly mobilized. We’ve distributed food, water, first aid kits and radios. We’ve also passed out tarps, ropes and building supplies to help people reinforce their dwellings. And we stocked up on emergency supplies to help people after the storm passes.

As you may know, since late October, Haitians have been facing a serious outbreak of cholera. The deadly, waterborne disease has already claimed close to 450 lives and more than 6,700 cases have been reported. The torrential rains of the hurricane will most certainly worsen the epidemic.

Our priorities include making sure there is a supply of clean water for the most vulnerable — those living in camps — and distributing items to help prevent the spread of disease, such as clean water, jerry cans, aqua tabs, soap and hygiene kits.

In the aftermath of the storm, CARE will continue partnering with Haitians to rebuild their country and help empower them to lift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty.

Our poverty-fighting work doesn’t stop in Haiti. Every single day of the year, CARE is on the ground in the world’s poorest countries. Whether we’re delivering emergency relief or carrying out innovative programs that strike at the root causes of poverty, CARE is there — thanks to the generosity of friends like you.

Please make a tax-deductible gift today to help ensure that we can make a lasting difference in the lives of poor people in Haiti and other countries across the globe.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH

You have 24 hours

CARE -- Double your gift to help her live, learn and earn -- Double your gift

Last Chance!-- Get your gift matched dollar-for-dollar -- Double your gift

Facebook Twitter Tell a Freind

Time is running out — you only have 24 hours left to make your gift to CARE so that it can be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to total match limit of $1 million.

When you give by midnight tonight, your gift will go twice as far, so $15 becomes $30, $25 becomes $50, and $50 becomes $100.

That means your gift will go twice as far to help CARE deliver its poverty-fighting and emergency relief programs in times of crisis, like the recent outbreak of cholera that hit Haiti this past week or the floods that devastated Pakistan last month.

Your tax-deductible gift will make a lasting difference by empowering girls and women to lift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty for good.

Investing in girls and women is one of the smartest choices you can make. They comprise the largest portion of those who are poor and uneducated in the world. They are also the largest untapped resource in the fight against global poverty.

CARE’s innovative programs help empower impoverished girls and women around the world at pivotal moments in their lives: when pregnant and raising an infant, when applying classroom skills in the home and community and when earning a living. When women have the power to do what is best for themselves and their families at each of these moments, they can break the cycle of poverty.

By taking advantage of this special match in the next 24 hours, you will amplify the power of your gift to help CARE make a lasting difference in the lives of girls and women in poor countries and create a brighter future for their families and communities.

Thank you for your commitment to fighting global poverty with CARE.

Sincerely,

Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH

Weekend review &some News -The Heritage Foundation

***Lately, cableheads have been giving out sources for their various claims with the preface of who and where they got their accurate, good or great News info lately and for a news junkie it slightly amused me, definitely annoyed me so the rant is on. I watch and listen to all things Political on the tele but i rarely feel any group, single person or guest on cable is truly giving me the truth.  It is all opinion News and while we all know this the News just seems different  since the first African-American President was elected by 53%. I get the impression from some stations that they are still having a tough time with it and quite possibly the stations who probably are folks leaning to the right of all issues paying folks to those of us left of center tidbits that seems reasonable, fair and balance though i still am not drinking the kool-aid. If you are paying attention you hear what talkingheads consider then spew the news over the course of a 15minute set and all of a sudden a jab, a knock or personal complaint is thrown at President Obama or “The Government” without naming names… which is not just offensive to me but the viewer should get it most cableheads lean right .

The article below was first written February of 2009. I only included a portion of it, so if you want to read the complete article i guess you have to go to their website but it is apparent the article was intended for fellow members of the Heritage Foundation. The problem for me is that this group was on just about every News station all during the 2008 election campaign  giving out information that the public was asked to absorb and believe as the truth …We are now about 2 years later and while they are not on main stream tv as much the rhetoric has become nastier and they  have taken to CSPAN with what I consider dangerous rhetoric.   The point is that the Heritage Foundation is not a neutral organization as many have claimed and even ed shultz had to question their intent last week as well as a few other cableheads.  If you are listening to Republicans on any given day on any talk show all you hear are talking points given to them by the Heritage Foundation and these candidates are spewing them almost verbatim…it is offensive. This article grabbed my attention in 2/2009 and it just keeps being played over and over verbally by the right even now.

Stimulus Bill Abolishes Welfare Reform and Adds New Welfare Spending …

by Robert E. Rector and Katherine Bradley … To heritage foundation members

But overturning welfare reform is just the beginning. In his recent press conference, President Obama explained that the stimulus bill would provide “tax relief” and “direct investment” in infrastructure. He neglected to mention that of the $816 billion in new spending and tax cuts in the House stimulus bill–32 percent or $264 billion–is new means-tested welfare spending, providing cash, food, housing, and medical care to poor and low income Americans.[5] (The figure in the Senate bill is about 15 percent lower.)

I have to ask is what the Heritage Foundation saying truly an American attitude?

Double your power to change the world

CARE -- Mothers are the pillar of the home. Help her live, learn and earn. Double your gift now

Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar for the next 10 days. Give today to double your power to change the world. -- Double your gift now

Facebook Twitter Tell a Freind

Last week, I asked you to help us meet our goal of raising $3 million to invest in poor girls and women to empower them to escape poverty for good.

I’m thrilled to tell you that generous friends of CARE have committed to helping us reach our goal even sooner, by matching every dollar you give, up to $1 million. But this special opportunity is only good for the next 10 days.

That means, when you give within the next 10 days until the end of the day on Saturday, October 16, your gift of $15 becomes $30, $25 becomes $50.

Investing in girls and women is one of the smartest choices you can make. Girls and women comprise the largest portion of those who are poor and uneducated in the world.

They also face greater health risks. Almost every minute of the day, a mother dies during pregnancy or childbirth, leaving her children vulnerable to a similar fate. We know how to prevent almost every single one of those deaths, but we need your support to help deliver these lifesaving programs.

“The mother is the pillar of the home. If a woman dies, the children don’t know where to go. If the mother lives, the family will stay together. That’s why we focus on saving the mother’s life,” says Bacilia Vivanco, a midwife at CARE-supported Ayacucho Regional Hospital in Peru.

Our work doesn’t stop with health care. We also help girls and women tap into educational and financial resources that enrich their capacity to learn and earn. As a result, girls and women, and their families and communities all benefit.

That’s also why we’ve set an ambitious goal of raising $3 million from now until the end of the year. But please don’t wait. You only have through October 16 to get more bang for your buck. Double your power to change the world by making your gift today!

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH

“All my books are lost,” says 12-year-old Adil. “I am missing my school and home.”

Many survivors of the floods that devastated Pakistan recently didn’t have much to begin with and now, like Adil, they have nothing.

But you can give help and hope to children like Adil and so many others who face dire circumstances every single day in the 72 countries CARE serves.

The situation in Pakistan remains bleak. Most survivors of the floods live under open skies — with no sanitation and no clean water. This leaves them vulnerable to potentially fatal diseases, such as cholera and acute diarrhea.

In addition, many children and pregnant women aren’t getting enough to eat. Malnutrition is spreading.

CARE has been on the ground in Pakistan helping men, women and children with emergency relief, but we need your support to continue carrying out our disaster and long-term poverty-fighting programs around the world. Every single day, CARE works to address the root causes of poverty, including low-quality education, poor health care and hunger.

When you give to CARE, you open a world of possibilities for impoverished people everywhere. Let me share an example: With the generous support of friends like you, CARE was among the first responders to the earthquake in Haiti. Eight months after the quake, CARE continues to work with the people of Haiti to help rebuild their country — we’re reopening schools, setting up cash-for-work activities for women and providing counseling for children traumatized by the earthquake.

As you can see, the work we are doing in Pakistan, Haiti and the other countries CARE serves is vital to alleviating suffering and fighting poverty. And it’s only possible because of the generosity of supporters like you.

You can help by making a gift to CARE. You will be a proud partner in changing lives and helping children like Adil regain hope and overcome poverty.

Sincerely,
