You won’t believe who is getting a “distinguished citizen” award!

John Watson is NOT a
“Distinguished Global Citizen”

There are many ways Chevron CEO John Watson has “distinguished” himself to the global community, but none of them deserves praise. Environmental destruction, loss of life, public health crisis, abuse of power, undermining democracy, attacking concerned shareholders and trampling First Amendment rights have been “The Chevron Way” under his watch. Yet, the San Francisco Commonwealth Club has seemingly ignored John Watson’s record and on April 2nd plans to present him with a “distinguished global citizen” award.TAKE ACTION NOW

Send a message directly to the Commonwealth Club
saying that such behavior should be condemned, not rewarded.

Due to Chevron’s egregious actions last year, people in twenty nations on five continents protested against the corporation. Only a few weeks ago, Chevron won the Public Eye Lifetime Achievement Award for corporate abuse. Additionally, Watson himself has a formal complaint filed against him at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. His company, found liable for $9.5 billion for the worst oil-related disaster in history in Ecuador, continues to refuse to pay. Thumbing his nose at the courts, Watson’s strategy has been to attack the very people Chevron poisoned as criminals.

Such behavior is simply appalling. That’s why over 35 environmental and human rights organizations have denounced this award and are calling on the Commonwealth Club to rescind it. John Watson and Chevron must be called out for what they are: corporate criminals who abuse their massive wealth to harm people and planet with virtual impunity.

Please join us and let them hear your voice. Corporate criminals must be held accountable, not rewarded.

There’s no appeasing the gun lobby.

Extreme Risk Protection Orders was exactly the kind of bill the gun lobby and their allies in the Legislature said they could support.

It was bipartisan.  It was about keeping guns out of the hands of those most at risk of perpetrating the next mass shooting – those experiencing a mental health crisis. It addressed all of the Second Amendment concerns raised by the gun lobby.  And it did nothing to infringe on the rights of stable, law-abiding citizens.

Yet, despite widespread support – and despite admitting that the bill could prevent tragedies – elected leaders in the Legislature conspired with the gun lobby to kill the bill.  And they succeeded.

No matter how many hurdles the bill cleared, House Majority Leader Pat Sullivan and his allies found a way to block it at every turn. And Speaker Frank Chopp could do nothing to stop it.

The politicians in Olympia have failed the people of Washington again.  They have failed the victims and survivors of gun violence.  This is a shameful betrayal – and not one we take lightly.  That’s why we’re launching the Hold Them Accountable Fund. Chip in a donation right now and let’s show the gun lobby and their appeasers that we mean business!

This bill might be dead.  But this fight isn’t over.  The mission of the Hold Them Accountable Fund is to shine a bright light on legislators who conspire with the gun lobby and hold them accountable for their behavior.  They think they can do the bidding of the gun lobby without consequence.  We are going to prove them wrong.

Make a donation right now.  Let’s build a grassroots-powered campaign to hold legislators who conspire with the gun lobby accountable.  It’s time to go on offense.

Getting sued is no fun.  Most people try to avoid it.  But not us.  In fact, we’ve asked to join the people of Washington as co-defendants in the gun lobby’s lawsuit attacking Initiative 594 – our new universal background checks law.
Why’d we do it?  Because 594 is keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.  And it’s making our communities safer.  We’ve spent the last two years fighting to pass the initiative and defending the initiative against the gun lobby’s attacks.
And we know how to beat them.
We’re asking grassroots supporters to raise $35,000 by the end of the month – that’s midnight tonight – to help us build the 594 Legal Defense Fund. This is going to be tough fight, and we need all hands on deck.
We’re getting close to hitting the goal, but we’re almost out of time.  Chip in a donation right now, and let’s show the gun lobby that we won’t back down!
Let’s do this!
