Three years later and while there are natural disasters occurring … Haiti still needs help

After more than seven months of work and a prolonged effort by Organizing for America supporters, House and Senate leaders just agreed on a final Wall Street reform bill. They’re moving fast toward final votes.
This is the final hurdle to enacting the toughest financial reforms since the Great Depression — and delivering another historic accomplishment for the American people.
These votes in the House and Senate will come down to the wire. Lobbyists for the big banks will be knocking down the doors on Capitol Hill this week, so we’re going all-in over the next few days to fight back — and that starts with a massive public display of support for the bill.
Many in Congress are fighting hard alongside President Obama for Wall Street reform — they need to hear our support. Others are standing with the special interests — and it’s even more important that they hear from us too.
Reform doesn’t just help create a more stable economy, it greatly improves the daily lives of all American families. Here are five of the most important benefits of the bill:
1) Reform forces credit card and mortgage companies to play by the rules. No more hidden fees or pages of fine print.
2) Families who are hoping to buy a home or pay for college are put on a level playing field with lenders. Reform ensures they’ll get the information they need presented clearly and concisely so they can make good decisions. The same goes for small businesses and community banks who play fair and deserve to see their businesses grow.
3) The legislation cracks down on predatory lenders looking to mislead people into taking on irresponsible debt.
4) Wall Street reform establishes an independent agency — the Consumer Financial Protection Agency — whose sole job is to protect consumers and enforce the new consumer financial protections, which would be the strongest ever enacted.
5) Finally, American taxpayers will never again be asked to bail out the big banks that are “too big to fail.” Let’s be absolutely clear about this, no matter what our opponents in Congress say.
But these changes will only happen if the President can sign it into law. We need to get the bill to him.
Stand with the President in support of this crucial reform:

It’s been a little more than a week since Tea Party protesters hurled racial and homophobic slurs and spat at members of Congress. I don’t want to repeat the language they used. Their despicable statements were widely reported in the media, and be assured this was no isolated or fringe event.
What the Tea Party protesters said was beyond defensible. But that’s not even the worst of it. The Tea Party movement is inciting violent acts targeting Democrats who voted to support the health care reform bill.
Democrats and Republicans alike must immediately address this atmosphere of violence targeting our elected officials. You would think this would be uncontroversial in the wake of protesters shouting the “N word” in the halls of Congress. But shockingly the Republican National Committee has refused to endorse a bi-partisan “civility” statement that would send a message to the protesters.
Join me in demanding that Republican leaders stop turning a blind eye to violence and hate before it gets out of control and someone gets hurt. Click the link below to add your name.

Although the media’s attention on Haiti is starting to wane, the country is still amidst crisis.

Call on Treasury Secretary Geithner to help cancel Haiti’s $1 billion debt.
The incredible outpouring of concern, aid and assistance coming from all over the world continues to offer hope, but for many of us the question lingers: “What else can I do?”
One important way to help Haitians build a better tomorrow is to convince global creditors to cancel Haiti’s crushing $1 billion international debt. Doing so will help make sure that every possible future dollar goes towards rebuilding a stronger Haiti, not to servicing old debts.
Thankfully, the United States has already forgiven Haiti’s past debts and now only gives assistance in the form of grants. We need Haiti’s other creditors – the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and countries like Taiwan and Venezuela – to follow our lead and do the same.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has the power to help make that happen.
Please tell Secretary Geithner to work to secure the cancellation of Haiti’s $1 billion debt and ensure emergency assistance is provided in the forms of grants, not debt-incurring loans. Even before the earthquake hit, Haiti – the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere – faced tremendous challenges. But there was also hope. Recent years have brought a more stable government and tenuous gains in the fight against poverty.
