Before you hit the beach, parade or barbeque today, take a minute to watch this inspiring video celebrating the military veterans who are rebuilding the World Trade Center. They received training through the Helmets to Hardhats program, which led to good careers for them as union members in the building and construction trades.

.The brave veterans featured in this video speak to the values of a strong work ethic, ingenuity and working together as a team—values shared by both the military and unions. These vets are why I am so optimistic about the future of this country. Though we have hard work ahead, I believe we can invest and rebuild our country through the sacrifice and spirit of working families, union and nonunion, all across this nation.

Working people built this country and it is working people who will make it strong again.

We need to take the lead and show our politicians and business leaders that they can do the right thing to create and keep good jobs here in the United Statesby ending the policies that ship production, jobs and innovation overseas.

Made in America is alive as long as we have the strength, pride and will to make it happen, as the veterans in this video show through their work every day. The labor movement is committed to these values because they bring us together and will make America strong again.

Get in the spirit of the holiday, please watch and share this video by clicking here

Thank you for all you do for working families every day—and have a safe and happy July 4.In Solidarity,Richard L. Trumka
President, AFL-CIOP.S. The Senate is expected in the coming weeks to take up the Bring Jobs Home Act, a bill that would eliminate the tax deduction for companies that move jobs overseas and get the ball rolling on much-needed reforms to keep and create U.S. jobs. Please call 1-888-659-9401 to leave a message for your senators that you want them to support this bill when it comes up for a vote.

Thank them for their service … Ron Pierce, Democrats.org

“Welcome home.”

That was President Obama’s message to troops at Fort Bragg in December, marking the end of the war in Iraq.

Today is the nine-year anniversary of the start of that war.

More than 1.5 million men and women served there over the past nine years. Some troops are still stationed overseas, in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

I’d like to ask you to take a moment today to reflect on the sacrifices our troops and their families have made — and the sacrifices some are still making — and invite you to leave a message to thank them for their service:

President Obama recently announced one of the largest increases in funding for veteranshealth care in decades, so they can return to the care they need.

He’s also working to make sure veterans get the jobs they deserve, taking executive actions and signing legislation that provides help for them to re-enter the workforce.

It’s an important part of his promise — not just to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end, but to honor our commitment to our service members.

And it all comes down to one simple principle: Because they got our backs, we’ll get theirs.

Please take a moment to honor our troops’ service on this anniversary, and if you’d like, send a message to thank them:

I’d like to share a video with you. It features Mike McCarry, a 59-year-old veteran who juggles two jobs to make ends meet.

Mike talks about the veterans portion of President Obama’s jobs plan — the piece that Congress passed earlier this month thanks in part to your work, and that the President signed into law today.

But the fight for American jobs continues, and many in Congress — including almost every single Republican — still refuse to do the right thing for teachers, cops, firefighters, and middle-class families like they did for our vets.

Watch the video, then pass it along to your friends to keep the pressure on Congress:

Fighting for Veterans jobs

It can be easy to get discouraged when members of Congress put party before people and block legislation that would help American families.

But you didn’t let up in the fight for our veterans’ future. The bill that went to the President’s desk for his signature today — which provides tax credits for small businesses that hire unemployed veterans — is proof that Congress can still come together and act when Americans demand it.

Here’s what’s next: After Thanksgiving, the Senate will vote on extending President Obama’s payroll tax cut, which puts $1,500 in the pockets of the typical middle-class family.

It’s the provision that Mitt Romney called a “little band-aid.” But $1,500 wouldn’t be a band-aid for me or Mike McCarry — and probably not for you either.

Our job right now is to make sure Congress does the right thing again.

Share this video with friends and family and encourage them to keep the pressure on:
