Stop early dismissals in Seattle schools


There’s a new petition taking off on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it:

Frequent early school dismissals are a terrible hardship on families.  Parents under financial stress, working parents, multi-child families, single parents, and many other caregivers have no good childcare and/or transportation options to manage early school dismissals.  We urge you to find a family-friendly way to provide teachers with the planning time they need.

Hi, everyone —

This is the start of a national debate. Across the country, we’re having a serious discussion about how we can build a fair and effective immigration system that lives up to our heritage as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants.

And we need your help to make sure that genuine, personal perspectives are part of the conversation. The truth is, that if we go back far enough, nearly every American story begins somewhere else — so often with ancestors setting out in search of a different life, carving out a future for their children in this place that all of us now call home.

We want to make sure that idea isn’t far from the minds of policymakers here in Washington as we work to reach an agreement to reform immigration.

To kick things off, one of the President’s senior advisors sat down to share his story with you.

Watch David Simas tell his American story, then tell us yours.

When Americans from all over the country — each with different backgrounds, each from different circumstances — all speak out with the same voice, it’s powerful in a way that’s hard to ignore. We’ve seen it again and again, in debate after debate.

And this is the kind of issue where putting a face on the push for reform takes an abstract concept and makes it real. So share your American stories with us, and we’ll put them to use.

We’ll publish them on the White House website. We’ll share them on Facebook and Twitter. We’ll do everything we can to make sure they’re part of the debate around immigration reform.

Protect Seattle from dangerous coal exports!

We all love Seattle’s waterfront because of its great restaurants, entertainment, art and culture — but mostly for views of our beautiful Puget Sound. It is part of why we choose to live here.

But imagine up to 18 coal trains, each a mile and a half long, rumbling through the waterfront daily — disrupting this vital economic tourist engine, polluting our water with toxic coal dust and making already-congested traffic worse.

That is what we will face if coal companies’ proposed 50-million-ton coal export terminal in Whatcom County gets built.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Join Mayor McGinn and Seattle waterfront businesses at a Seattle Waterfront Business Appreciation event and protect Seattle’s waterfront from dirty coal exports!

Congress has got a real nasty habit

Right now, way too many lawmakers in Washington flat-out refuse to face the facts when it comes to climate change.

We’re never going to make real progress on this issue unless members of Congress get serious. Instead, some of them have made a habit of publicly mocking it.

We thought it was time to call them out for denying what’s basic science.

Denying climate change keeps us from finding a solution. Watch this.

The science matters in this.

That’s the message way too many people in Washington need to hear right now.

In 2011, there were 240 members of Congress who voted to say that climate change is a hoax.

Most of them are still around today, and they’re getting away with it — some of them are actually proud of it. They think the whole debate is pretty funny.

If we want to make progress on climate change, we need everyone in Congress on board for a solution. It’s our job to show them there’s a price to pay for being a climate denier.
