Watch ABC News’ Reporting Unravel

Media Matters for America
When ABC News hyped its false report that the administration’s Benghazi emails showed evidence of a political cover-up, it kicked off a media frenzy. Suddenly, after eight months of dismissing conservatives’ claims that Benghazi was a secret scandal, the networks were now featuring it as headline news.
After the report aired, the Benghazi “cover-up” led the Sunday shows not only on Fox News, but also on ABC, NBC, and CBS. On the May 10 edition of Fox News’ Special Report, Chris Wallace crowed, “The Benghazi story finally hit the mainstream media with a vengeance today…[because] of ABC.”
Click here to watch a short video of the unraveling of ABC’s false Benghazi story.

When the actual Benghazi emails were released, ABC News’ so-called “exclusive” was thoroughly debunked. However, according to ABC’s own poll from May 21, the false reporting stuck: a majority of Americans now think that the Obama administration is trying to cover up the facts about Benghazi.
ABC News has yet to address or correct its false report on the air. Coincidence? Doubtful.
Where are the corrections? Sign our letter to ABC News executives asking ABC to live up to its reputation and correct its false report:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently collecting public comments on the fate of Alaska‘s Bristol Bay. Plenty of rich, powerful companies would love to get their hands on the bay and its plentiful natural resources. Those of us who care about the environment and wildlife have to speak up to save the bay!
Click here to automatically tell the EPA that you strongly oppose the destruction of Bristol Bay.
The Pebble Mine would destroy Bristol Bay. It would turn irreplaceable wild Alaska lands into an open pit mine that covers an area 50 percent larger than Manhattan, with dams the height of Hoover Dam, and the potential to hold more than 7 billion tons of waste.Instantly add your name to the petition urging the EPA to protect one of America’s last great wild places.

Tell Target to Stop Supporting Slavery in Uzbekistan

Dear Activist,Target often offers prices that seem too good to be true – so how do they keep their prices so low?It turns out some of Target’s products might be so cheap because they are made with slave-picked cotton from Uzbekistan and/or purchased from Daewoo International, a company that accounts for approximately 20% of all cotton processed in Uzbekistan.

Tell Target to sign the Daewoo Protocol to fight modern slavery in Uzbekistan.

Thanks for all you do!

Walk Free: The Movement to End Modern SlaveryDear Activist,We know – a great deal can be hard to resist. And Target often offers prices that seem too good to be true. It makes you think – how do they keep their prices so low? We’ve recently learned that some of Target’s products might be so cheap because they are made with slave-picked cotton from Uzbekistan and/or purchased from Daewoo International, a company that accounts for approximately 20% of all cotton processed in Uzbekistan. Every year, during the harvest season, over a million children and adults – including teachers, nurses and doctors – are ripped out of their homes, schools and jobs, and forced to work in the cotton fields of Uzbekistan to meet daily picking quotas. While Target has signed the pledge to not buy slave-picked Uzbek cotton, they are still doing business with Daewoo, a company that clearly profits from the exploitation of children and adults in Uzbekistan. If Target is truly serious about keeping slavery out of its stores, Target needs to stop doing business with Daewoo and agree to implement the Daewoo Protocol – a series of steps companies need to take to eliminate slave-picked cotton from their supply chains. Call on Target to eliminate the threat of slave-picked cotton in their stores by joining the Daewoo Protocol. We expect more from Target, a company that takes pride in holding the highest ethical standards for itself and for its business partners. So we called and asked Target to join the Daewoo Protocol which is supported by retailers declining to do business with Daewoo until it takes serious steps to stop sourcing slave-picked Uzbek cotton.

Target said they didn’t need to sign the Daewoo Protocol because they have a “No Uzbek Cotton” policy. But such a policy only works if you’re willing to enforce it.

Tell Target to sign the Daewoo Protocol and stop supporting modern slavery in Uzbekistan. After you take action, please take a moment to spread the word by forwarding this email to 3 of your friends. Thank you, Debra, Nick, Jacqui, Jessica, Hayley, Jess, Mich, Amy and the Walk Free Team

Walk Free is a movement of people everywhere, fighting to end one of the world’s greatest evils: Modern slavery.

Justice for Everybody

West Wing Week: “Justice for Everybody”

This week, the President continued his Jobs & Opportunity tour — highlighting bold new efforts in education and manufacturing in Baltimore. He gave the commencement address at Morehouse College, and hosted an array of guests here at the White House — including the President of Myanmar, eight immigration reform advocates and DREAMers, and Gershwin Prize winner Carol King and friends. And that was all before Thursday, when President Obama delivered a major counter-terrorism speech at the National Defense University.

10 Crazy Things the Right Did

By  ThinkProgress War Room   It’s been another week of the insane, inane, and outright offensive. Here’s your top ten:

  1. Pennsylvania governor can’t find any Latinos to work for him. Gov. Tom Corbett (R-PA) told a Spanish-language newspaper this week that he didn’t have any Latinos working for him. There are approximately 18,000 Latinos just in the Harrisburg, PA area alone.
  2. Pennsylvania governor remembers single Latino who works for him. A day after saying he didn’t have any Latinos working for him, Corbett suddenly remembered a single Latino appointee working in his administration.
  3. Conservatives freak out over Boy Scouts decision to admit gays. Here’s the ten best conservative freak-outs over the group’s decision to admit gay scouts while maintaining a ban on gay leaders.
  4. Tea Party congressman mansplains his anti-abortion views. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), speaking at a hearing about an unconstitutional ban on abortion after 20 weeks that House Republicans are championing, told a witness that she should’ve been forced to wait and give birth rather than have an abortion even though her fetus had no brain function.
  5. Top Republican called Obama’s national security speech “a victory for terrorists.” The comments were made by Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee. Chambliss defeated a decorated, triple amputee veteran in 2002 by running an ad juxtaposing his opponent with images of Osama bin Laden.
  6. Texas GOP continued its obsession with limiting women’s rights. The Texas GOP introduced another 24 anti-abortion bills this year, but thankfully none of them advanced.
  7. This man could be the next Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. Virginia Republicans nominated an extremely anti-gay, anti-abortion minister who has a long history of making insensitive and inflammatory comments. Here’s his 20 craziest tweets.
  8. RNC chair melts down. In an effort to attack the president, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus threw out attacks so over the top that the Morning Joe crew called him out.
  9. GOP senator says implementing Obamacare is just like an illegal coverup. Because of her efforts to implement Obamcare, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) likened Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to convicted criminal Oliver North.
  10. GOP senator defends Apple’s efforts to avoid billions of dollars in U.S. taxes. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), in a move reminiscent of Rep. Joe Barton’s infamous apology to BP in the wake of its disastrous oil spill, apologized to top Apple officials for being called in front of the Senate to explain how they use complex structures and gimmicks to avoid paying U.S. taxes.
