For years, communities of the Xingu along with millions of Brazilian and international supporters have opposed the ongoing, destructive Belo Monte mega dam project. Despite the massive devastation it has already caused – forests have been bulldozed and thousands of people forcibly displaced – the region has not yet been flooded.
The people of the Xingu have not given up the fight to save their rainforest home. This week, with the encouragement of the international community, the Brazilian environmental agency IBAMA rejected Belo Monte’s final operational license. This announcement effectively stopped the flooding of Altamira and further displacement of thousands – for now. But it’s critical that we continue to advocate for support of IBAMA’s decision, as well as to pressure the Brazilian government uphold this decision.
IBAMA’s rejection of the Belo Monte license is a victory for justice and the environment. Help ensure that this win is not short-lived – act today!
Unfortunately, Brazil’s current corruption and scandal reach to the highest levels of government. International solidarity for the people of the Xingu and support for IBAMA’s recent decision has never been more critical. Please take action today and let IBAMA know that you applaud their decision and that you will stand with them and against government corruption.
