This could be our chance to stop a stolen election — ten Electors from both parties are calling for a security briefing about Russia’s interference in the vote.

And they have eight days to get it before they are forced to cast their ballots for President.

The CIA says there is Russian interference, Obama has called for a full intelligence review and Trump is denying everything. Knowing the facts is the least the Electoral College deserves!

When everyone voted we didn’t know that Russia had likely interfered in the election to get Trump in power. And when many states were decided by tens of thousands of votes it’s likely this information would have changed the outcome!

But there’s still so much we don’t know because it’s incomplete or classified and maybe that’s the right call. Electors, though, hold our entire future in their hands and need the clearance to get information, even if it’s secret from all of us. That’s their job — to protect against gross injustices, corruption, and terrible outcomes from a popular vote.

We can’t know if there’s a case for the Electoral College to change their vote. But we can make sure those individuals hold the basic information they need to make an informed decision. Let’s support their right to know and give the Electors a huge national wind at their back:

Click here to get the Electors the information they need!

This is a no-brainer: tell the people who will ultimately choose our next President the whole truth! And we can win it in time — it’s already a bipartisan call, now we can make it a national one.

The incredible law that can still stop Trump

Hillary won more votes than Trump, and still lost. But the genius popular vote plan could still stop Trump from becoming president — but we have to act fast. Click to sign this urgent petition with just one click and share with everyone you know:

More Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump! That’s right, Clinton won the popular vote, but the electoral college system will silence the people’s voice. But there’s an incredible Hail Mary plan that could still stop Trump — if we act really fast!

The Popular Vote Plan is genius. It’s legislation that would guarantee the candidate who receives the most popular votes is elected, and it only needs the support of enough states to equal 270 electoral votes to pass. 10 states are on board, and 4 have pending legislation, so it’s already 3/4 of the way there!

The electoral college meets in a few weeks to decide our next president — and if we can create enormous national pressure on the few holdout states to adopt the plan before it’s too late, we can still stop Trump from becoming the next president. Let’s make this massive! Click below to sign this urgent petition with just one click and share with everyone you know:

To state lawmakers in Oregon, Connecticut, New Mexico and across America:
As citizens deeply concerned that the presidential candidate with the support of the majority of American voters will not become president, we urge you to pass the National Popular Vote bill immediately before the electoral college meets on December 19. The voice of most Americans should not be silenced. It’s time to make sure that every vote, in every state, matters in every presidential election.

The electoral college system is a disaster for our democracy. It forces presidential candidates to focus all their energy on a small fraction of their voters — leading to crazy policies like the enormous agricultural subsidies designed to appease farmers in the electorally-important state of Iowa — and it leaves 75% of voters without a voice in who runs our country.

To officially get rid of the electoral college would require a constitutional amendment. But what’s so brilliant about the Popular Vote Plan is that it doesn’t need a change to the constitution, it just needs the consensus of enough states. Here’s how it would work: states pass legislation saying they will give all their electoral college votes to the winner of the national popular vote, and, when there are enough states to represent 270 electoral votes, the legislation becomes binding.

In 2004, Bush became president in the exact same way Trump is set to. Right after the election, there was huge outrage over the electoral college — but then our attention moved on. This time, we must seize the moment and do everything we can to stop Trump from becoming president.

Democracy is at the core of Avaazers’ DNA. We come together around the idea that the world we want is a dream shared by most people everywhere — not just the vision of the few. This is a chance to take a step towards that vision despite the darkness of the last few days, and to put our country on the path to a better future.

With hope,

So,i guess we were warned but … The GOP’s Plan to Rig the Electoral College & Steal the White House 1/2013

By ThinkProgress War Room

Republican politicians have a big problem. Their massively unpopular policies and offensive rhetoric about minorities, women, and LGBT people have alienated vast swaths of the electorate, making it increasingly difficult for them to win national elections. And these problems are only getting worse as the country’s attitudes evolves and its demographics change. In fact, the Republican candidate has lost the popular vote in 5 of the last 6 presidential elections. The Republicans’ Solution: Re-Write the Rules to Game the System and Rig Elections Instead of addressing their fundamental problems, Republican politicians have instead devoted themselves to re-writing the rules and rigging the game:

  • Make it Harder to Vote: Republican politicians are engaged in a systematic campaign to change voting laws and election procedures in order make it harder for young people, minorities, and others likely to vote Democratic to vote.
  • Gerrymander: Because of partisan gerrymandering after the 2010 Census, Republicans have a structural advantage when it comes to the House of Representatives. Even though more than a million more people voted for Democrats for the House in 2012, Republicans still managed to hold on to the House with a 15-seat majority.
  • Rig the Game: Now Republican-controlled swing states are trying to rig the Electoral College in order to steal the White House.

How It Works

  • Red States Stay the Same: Truly red states keep the current winner-take-all system, thus delivering all of their electoral votes to the Republican candidate.
  • Swing States Get Divided Up: Swing states currently controlled by Republicans (VA, OH, WI, MI, PA, NC, and FL) will award their electoral votes by Congressional District. Through gerrymandering, Republicans have managed to pack Democrats into a small number of districts, giving the GOP a large advantage in the aggregate number of House seats they hold in these states.
  • Bonus Votes for Republicans: In some versions of this plan, the two remaining electoral votes in each state that are not associated with a House district would still be awarded to the winner of the state’s popular vote. Virginia, however, has an even more pernicious plan; its plan would award the other two votes to the winner of a majority of the state’s congressional districts. If other swing states adopted this plan, it could shift an extra dozen or more electoral votes to the Republican candidate — a number equivalent to the electoral votes of Virginia or the votes of Iowa and Nevada combined.

The Result — President Romney

The GOP plan to rig the Electoral College means that even if a Democrat wins the popular vote in a state by a comfortable margin, the Republican candidate could still walk away with as many two-thirds or even three-quarters of the state’s Electoral College votes.
If Republican-controlled swing states had put this plan into effect before the 2012 election, Mitt Romney would likely be the president today thanks to the shift in electoral votes in key states. If all of these states chose the Virginia model that gives Republicans two bonus electoral votes per state, then Mitt Romney would definitely have been the one to be sworn in this past Monday.

This Threat Is Real & Is Happening Now

This GOP plan to rig the Electoral College and steal the White House is not simply theoretical in nature. It’s a real threat to our democracy. Republicans — including two GOP governors — are actually considering this plan in several of these states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Republicans in the Virginia Senate are trying to pass just such a plan right now. For more information on this scheme, please see the full report released today by the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

BOTTOM LINE: Instead of trying to win fair and square by persuading voters that their values and ideas are the best for America, Republicans are now instead trying to re-write the rules in order to rig the system in their favor and steal the White House.

Election Security Is a Matter of National Security

Recently, Verified Voting Founder and Board member David Dill published an opinion piece in Scientific American.  Dr. Dill’s thoughts on the intersection of voting security and national security are insightful and well reasoned.  As a supporter of our election integrity work, we thought you would be interested in reading this important piece.  Dr. Dill’s column appears below.  I think you will find it interesting and hope you will share it with others.

Election Security Is a Matter of National Security

It is not good enough to say, “We can’t prove fraud.” In every election we need evidence that vote counts are accurate.

State-sponsored cyber-attacks seemingly intended to influence the 2016 Presidential election have raised a question: Is the vulnerability of computerized voting systems to hacking a critical threat to our national security? Can an adversary use methods of cyber-warfare to select our commander-in-chief?

A dedicated group of technically sophisticated individuals could steal an election by hacking voting machines key counties in just a few states. Indeed, University of Michigan computer science professor J. Alex Halderman says that he and his students could have changed the result of the presidential election. Halderman et al. have hacked a lot of voting machines, and there are videos to prove it. I believe him.

Halderman isn’t going to steal an election, but a foreign power might be tempted to do so. The military expenditures of a medium-size country dwarf the cost of a multi-pronged attack, which could include using the internet, bribing employees of election offices and voting machine vendors, or just buying voting machine companies. It is likely that such an attack would not be detected, given our current election security practices.

What would alert us to such an attack? What should we do about it? If there is reason to suspect an election result (perhaps because it’s an upset victory that defies the vast majority of pre-election polls), common sense says we should double-check the results of the election as best we can. But this is hard to do in America. Recount laws vary with each state. In states where it is possible to get a recount, it often has to be requested by one of the candidates, often at considerable expense.

In the recent election, it is fortunate that Green Party Presidential candidate Jill Stein, citing potential security breaches, recently requested a recount of the 2016 presidential vote in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and plans to do so in Michigan. Donald Trump unexpectedly won these three states by very narrow margins, and their recount laws are favorably compared with some of the other swing states.

With the limited information we have so far, there is no convincing evidence in the reported results that the election was stolen electronically. However, there is heightened public concern because of alleged Russian hacking of campaign emails and voter registration systems. Also, Mr. Trump and his advisors broadcast repeated claims that the election would be rigged by means including fraudulent voting machines.

Now that the election is over, we must defend our voting system more effectively. It is clearly vulnerable to attack not only by foreign powers, but by criminal groups, campaigns, and motivated amateurs. If elections lose their credibility, democracy can quickly disintegrate. After every election, it is not good enough to say, “We can’t prove fraud.” In every election, we need evidence that vote counts are accurate.

The good news is that we know how to solve this problem. We need to audit computers by manually examining randomly selected paper ballots and comparing the results to machine results. Audits require a voter-verified paper ballot, which the voter inspects to confirm that his or her selections have been correctly and indelibly recorded. Since 2003, an active community of academics, lawyers, election officials and activists has urged states to adopt paper ballots and robust audit procedures. This campaign has had significant, but slow, success. As of now, about three quarters of U.S. voters vote on paper ballots. Twenty-six states do some type of manual audit, but none of their procedures are adequate. Auditing methods have recently been devised that are much more efficient than those used in any state. It is important that audits be performed on every contest in every election, so that citizens do not have to request manual recounts to feel confident about election results. With high-quality audits, it is very unlikely that election fraud will go undetected whether perpetrated by another country or a political party. There is no reason we can’t implement these measures before the 2020 elections. As a nation, we need to recognize the urgency of the task, to overcome the political and organizational obstacles that have impeded progress. Otherwise, we risk losing our country to hackers armed with keyboards, without a shot being fired.
