Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to make this country a better place to live for everyone by building a beloved community. The MLK Day of Service is an opportunity to transform those teachings into actions that meet the tangible needs of those who need it the most.
For the 2018 MLK Day Weekend of Service, we’re asking OFA volunteers to host community outreach events across the country. As part of OFA’s vision to create a more accessible, participatory, and fair democracy, volunteers will be using these events as an opportunity to bring their communities closer together — particularly those disproportionately affected by voter suppression and disenfranchisement.
In addition to giving back to the community through service projects, OFA believes that voter registration outreach efforts align particularly well with the MLK Day of Service purpose — to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, and address social problems. We encourage OFA volunteers to get out in their community and promote awareness around voter registration by using the my.ofa.us/register tool. Be sure to check out our 2018 MLK Day Weekend of Service Host Guide for best practices and resources on hosting your event. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbors, empower folks to use their voices, and strengthen civic participation in our democracy.
