#PayUp: It’s time to reboot the gig economy

Target: Lawmakers, companies, customers, and investors

Gig jobs can be good jobs. But that won’t happen until the companies Pay Up.

We want to protect the flexibility & convenience of working as independent contractors in the gig economy — while also making sure companies don’t use it as an excuse for dramatically low pay, tip theft, and black-box pay algorithms.

We’re coming together around three demands for new laws to secure basic rights for gig workers…

1) Pay floor of $15/hr + expenses, for every hour with an active job
There are a lot of specific issues with the ways specific apps pay — but most of them come down to a bottom line: how much we’re getting paid for our time. After expenses.

We’re calling for outside accountability: laws that say every job being offered by every gig economy company must meet the basic requirement of paying enough to make the time — and gas, and car maintenance, and other expenses — that we spend on it worth the while.

Our proposal: requiring gig companies to meet a minimum pay floor equivalent to at least a $15/hr for every hour on an active job, plus the cost of expenses, for time we spend actively working.

Being classified as independent contractors shouldn’t give companies an excuse to pay us less than the minimum wage.

There are lots of details to be worked out about how this would look on each app, but the key idea is that companies should be paying us a rate at least equivalent to $15 for every hour on an active job + expenses for our work. That should be a bottom line they can’t go below.

2) Tips on top
A tip is a tip. It’s extra. It’s on top. When a customer adds a tip, they’re doing it because they want to give a little extra to the people doing the work.
Nobody wants to be tipping a corporation worth billions of dollars.
So let’s make that real. We need a clear and sharp legal definition that tips are on top of pay. Tips are a supplement to pay, not a substitute. That’s pretty basic.

3) Transparency
Workers deserve to know what they’re being paid and why. Just like employees get a pay stub, gig workers deserve a detailed breakdown that shows the basic details of the work we’re doing: how long it took, how many miles, what we’re paid, and what “units of work” were involved — items shopped, etc.
This is a basic way to ensure real transparency for gig workers. No more black-box algorithms. We need a clear & consistent explanation of what we’re getting paid and why.
As workers in the gig economy, it’s time for our voices to finally be heard. Instacart shoppers led the way by creating a powerful national conversation about pay in the gig economy. Now, let’s use that momentum and go big.

Lawmakers across the country are listening. So let’s tell them: here’s what we need. It’s time for companies in the gig economy to #PayUp.

Thank you for being a part of it!

Three major milestones ~ Food & Water Watch

Food & Water Watch

Food & Water Watch organizing is working, and we’re beating Big Oil and Gas.

Just last week we had three big victories in California, Pennsylvania and New Mexico:

California: Mayor Garcetti in Los Angeles made an announcement to stop the re-building of three L.A. gas-fired power plants in a push to move the city closer to 100% renewable energy.¹
Pennsylvania: Governor Tom Wolf announced that his administration will stop issuing construction permits for Energy Transfer pipelines, including the dangerous Mariner East pipeline project.²
• New Mexico: After Food & Water Watch delivered over 27,000 signatures in opposition, the Bureau of Land Management called for a delay on the sale of 1,500 acres of land near Chaco Canyon for oil and gas development.³

for  more information go to …

This is because of the pressure we’ve been putting on Garcetti, Wolf and other elected officials — the petitions, the calls and the demonstrations!

Onward together,

Wenonah Hauter
Executive Director

THE TOP 5 PRE-Existing LIARS.

THE TOP 5 PRE-Existing condition – LIARS
We all know that the ultimate Republican dream is to end the ACA. So, why do Republicans think Americans will fall for their lies now?
Meet the top five pre-ex liars of the 2018 midterms:
President Trump continued the GOP’s midterm strategy of lies with a tweet claiming that Republicans will protect people with pre-existing conditions far better than their Democratic opponents. What?
Rep. Martha McSally (R, AZ-02), Arizona Senate candidate, claims she led the fight to “force insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions.” Fact check: McSally voted twice to repeal the ACA and rip away those protections, at one point telling her GOP colleagues to get this “f***ing thing” done.
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R, CA-48) expounds on his commitment to protect pre-existing conditions. Meanwhile, he voted 9 times to fully repeal the ACA and overturn pre-existing conditions protections.
Missouri AG and GOP Senate Candidate, Josh Hawley, is going full-on pre-ex hero is his ads. FACT CHECK: Hawley is currently a plaintiff in a lawsuit that would repeal Obamacare and strip away pre-ex protections.
Republican incumbent Governor Scott Walker (WI) claims that he’s committed to protecting people with pre-existing conditions as governor. Funny, considering he’s currently suing to rip protections away from Wisconsinites.

Removing these dams could save rivers

President Obama said: Crack Down on Deadbeat Dams

  By DamNation Film

Communities in nearly every state are choosing to remove high-cost, low-value dams to restore rivers, recover fish stocks, revitalize waterfronts, improve quality of life and render watersheds more resilient to climate change.

Join us in calling on President Obama to crack down on deadbeat dams, beginning with four especially harmful, federally operated dams on the lower Snake River in southeastern Washington: Ice Harbor Dam, Lower Monumental Dam, Little Goose Dam and Lower Granite Dam.

Snake River salmon and steelhead once thrived, with up to 30 million wild fish entering the mouth of the Columbia River every year. Now, every Snake River salmon stock is on the endangered species list or extinct.

Obsolete dams impose a high cost on river communities and ecosystems, our economy and tribal cultures. We have found better ways to do the work of dams, and we have a historic opportunity to restore wild salmon to over 6,000 miles of river habitat. Now is the time for action on the Snake.
