1872 – Charlotte E. Ray became the African-American woman lawyer.



In 1872, Ray graduated from Howard University School of Law, completing a three-year program. She is believed to have specialized in corporate law . Her graduation made her the first woman to graduate from Howard’s law school and the first Black woman to earn a law degree in the U.S.
