a sport not many focus on … Golf & Women of Colour – reminder – Black History

Wethepeople

So, I’m flipping through my newest 2015 Essence from back to front because of the horoscope section and as I’m looking I see a section called “trending topics” reporting that the USTA just appointed former tennis player Katrina Adams, President, CEO and chairman of the board and the first African American to fill the role. So, more things have changed in the World of Sports in which women of colour historically have not dominated.  While flipping through my 2014 issue of Essence with various fashions it was became obvious that this is not just about fashion, though the title gave me that impression and had to share given the history. In fact, it is about a Woman named Renee Powell and some young Women who were introduced to her and who have chosen her as their mentor. Now, the surprise to most would be that these brightly fashionable women are people of colour and that the article is about golf or as they say, “One of America’s favourite pastimes.”  In fact my family lived just a few blocks away from a golf course and while golf wasn’t my choice the history of golf was well known in our house, including a couple of good along with the bad and the really ugly stories of racism. It is a sad day to know that the practice is still alive and well, though tiger woods did shatter the glass ceiling some. The art of discrimination is subtle these days, while the stories of’ the good ‘olé boys club were worse, golf is a work in progress. The article tells us about the ups and downs of Powell’s life and daily experiences as a young girl to becoming one of four African-American women qualifying for golf’s top pro-circuit … The LPGA Tour that included Althea Gibson, LaRee Pearl Sugg, Shasta Avery Hardt and Renee Powell. Their legacy on the links is gone into in depth. They list the youngest pro at 17, four others including the niece of tiger woods who also has a great story, but what is even more exciting is that after Powell retired she now owns her own golf club, is the golf pro. She also teaches and mentors a new generation of girls/women of colour who love the game and are willing to take it as far as they can. Golfing is not cheap, so, if you have an opportunity to donate to your area’s youth sports club or make time to teach train and expose kids of colour to golf … do it!

Oh and the article on Golf is in Essence and was written by Connie Aitcheson

and … it’s in  “Trending Topics”  the February issue of Essence

time to make the dream come alive …

 Martin Luther King Jr.

“People are dying for the right to speak freely, for a better life, human rights in all its forms”

No one speaks to life’s struggles better than

 – MLK jr.

“Human Progress is neither automatic nor inevitable even a superficial look at history reveals that no social advance rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals without persistent effort, time itself becomes an ally of the insurgent and primitive forces of irrational emotionalism and social destruction.

“This is no time for apathy or complacency … This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”

Sustainable Living and Wildlife

One day while I was minding my own business, I received an email from the fish and wildlife department. I had signed up to get them but not out of malice or some secret plan to track their actions, but I gotta say reading it gave me chills sadness and great disappointment… and that was my first reaction then it made me remember the elk kill that happened in December 2011; for a little background. I was reading local online news when I saw an article about an elk kill that was going to happen that following Monday. It went on to say that there was a golf course built in the area and after two years the course was suffering from damage so a request for containment was obviously put in and approved. This story just gets worse as the silly and ugly of it all becomes known and the obnoxious takes over; I read for more information. The article says about 30 Elk were noted encroaching, creating a mess for the owners and that a schedule of Elk Kills were made …I am becoming more upset and decided it is time to call. The contact person was great, but he said that there were only about three Elk. The dept. had arranged with the Owners of the golf course, but between you and me, it did not sound kosher because the kill had not been announced, the community did not know and the tribes in that area seemed to be left out as well. I am not against sport fishing or hunting but this is not the definition of it… it seems more like legalized poaching, which is wrong on so many levels. My dad hunted and fished but in the good way. Anyway, I decided to put the original article and my reaction out into the airwaves to see what would happen.  Apparently, the story was already getting a negative response with plenty of phone calls to the department. Thank goodness the community heard about it and demanded the kill be stopped. The area’s tribe stated they did not know about the kill and stated that some of the land where the kills would take place were on sacred land, which made me relax because unless or until a mutual agreement is made the Elk just might be safe. If they needed the meat, far be it from me to obstruct as long as the tribes and that area’s food banks are filled for the local communities. I cannot say that was on their minds though as one of the employee’s stated online, if they had just kept it quiet, the commotion would be less… there is more but I will spare you…

Now, in a different part of the Pacific NW, not only are they hiring to help with the elk kill they have a wait list of volunteers and “paid helpers” to “round” up the elk which is sickening.  Why? Because not too long ago the number of Elk was reduced to almost zero and five years later WA state decides to thin out the Elk again. btw wtf is taking the most sought out meat home? Again, another …hmmm did they talk to that area’s tribes?

My inquiry is below

Hello:

I just had to respond to an email, which I guess I subscribed to on a regular basis. First, I want to state that I have nothing against hunting, but I really do not understand why these elk kills are put on if the elk are truly not harming anyone. If someone could explain to the public who decides the kills are needed and why and how many and what could be done other than an every 5yr plan or so. I have to ask because the available habitat seems to be shrinking. At one point, the number of elk was very low with humans building roads and or homes on wildlife land.  I assure you that I am not the only Washingtonian that misunderstands, and some object to the kills. I am no expert but who is invading whom. I received an email looking for volunteers, who included the following: “The department’s management plan calls for reducing the herd size to bring the number of animals into balance with available habitat,” Jonker said.  For me, as a Washington resident exposed to hunting and fishing all my life; this just seems like a legalized poach and bringing the number in balance with the available habitat is only as big as the space taken up by the next golf course or family center or housing development. I do not understand who gets the meat, hopefully it will go to ALL the Tribes in that area … who, should be the only “hunters” by the way or the areas food banks but the whole “Volunteers” are needed to facilitate access for elk hunts “sounds the opposite of what hunting is all about.

Their response:

Thank you for contacting the Department of Fish and Wildlife. I am forwarding your e-mail to our Wildlife Management Program, so they can address your concerns.

If you have, any questions please feel free to contact us at360-902-2464 or email us atlicensing@dfw.wa.gov.

Like I said, I have nothing against hunting and fishing but what we have here is nothing close and poaching wildlife that already is dealing with humans that have decided to not just spread out but develop land at whatever cost to the Wildlife, just is opposite of Washington State should be about. They have been trying to bring back other predators and given how much development has been created… NOW, puts not only residents at risk but kids and animals on what feels like a monthly basis! There are Black and Brown bears, bob cats and such folks are told to beware of don’t do this that and the other … uh, live side by side? They want and want food…right? It’s up to the department to instruct and fine those who don’t exercise proper sanitation and or maybe don’t know how to clean their area, so wildlife stay in the habitat, which btw is surrounded by homes, schools and off-road trails… sigh

Washingtonians also have issues with Whales beaching themselves, not only are they dying of unknown illnesses, but pods of tagged Females are also having trouble keeping their calves alive. It could even be how they are being handled and honestly the possibility of sonars being the only thing,” those in the know” seem to be pointing toward as more and more die is weird. I may not know anything about the Puget Sound’s Whales, but I do feel that our Navy should cease and desist with all the sonar or at least tell the public what the sonars are being used against.  IMHO, Sonars are just the beginning or the problem, there are Cruise Ships, Trollers, Boaters and Whale Watching Boats that are not only getting too close, but testing has also found Fuel and Garbage harming and or killing the Marinelife.

Organized kills of Marinelife and Wildlife should concern us all. Why?  Because there is no announcement no explanation and this leaves some of us wondering what new development is about to shrink the habitat even more and who knows what the consequences will be but given what we’ve seen it can’t be good.

The War On Women …

The era of trump ended, but it appears as if inappropriate behavior on so many levels has not only continued but has found folks inciting, perpetrating, and or engaging in intimidation; it also seems to be spreading all over the World.  There are folks assaulting women, and beating POC, some are participating in hate crimes, while others are not only tossing out threats, but they don’t seem to act like these things are against the law. Now, there are reports of folks more willing to commit murder in the name of MAGA   … why?

In 2016, we saw conservative activists and Republican Governors assaulting not only a woman’s right to choose but making it incredibly difficult for Women to get to a clinic by quietly closing them one after the other.  Now, it’s not only election season but the end of 2024 is near, and the highest court in the land seems to have jumped the shark and is, as several dictionaries describe it, being an exaggeration of what seems like the original purpose of SCOTUS

Thing is, the US court system seems to have decided Women and Men don’t need clinics like Planned Parenthood, which also provide other services …like mammograms, cancer screenings, and referrals. When it comes to abortions, the idea that someone least we talk about a former POTUS would state that women should receive some sort of punishment, gets a …wtf?

Question:  do you think anyone in the era of trump researched unsafe abortions at all, or maybe it’s more like, did they care? Or found out that Abortion is Reproductive Healthcare. FYI – Abortions are NOT just for eliminating an unwanted pregnancy, and include little girls that need to keep their childhood intact in some way! They should have the right and freedom to be kids aka Minors!

In a nation created by and of immigrants, but apparently doesn’t include immigrants. The guy who held power as POTUS for one term seems to lean toward white nationalism, was and still might be a birther, and his War On Women flag was confirmed when he gave employers control over a woman’s body… that’s my take.  It’s bad enough that clinics are being systematically closed by those leaning right, but now women in need of any type of reproductive procedure must travel several miles for it! If they have the money and can travel. The loss of these clinics and the impact on regular women who rarely get news coverage; continue to be quietly eliminated along with killing the reputations of doctors.

Unfortunately, Doctors in the business of helping women by providing general health care as well as safe reproductive products/ procedures have suffered over thirty years of intimidation, with threats of violence! We were in the crosshairs of a republican trifecta with a continued odd take on family values!  Women need to recognize and rise up against the strange family values that are pushing women, forcing them to fight for or struggle with health issues that affluent women probably do not!

We must remind folks of what facilities like Planned Parenthood do… They help Women and Men!

Why is it so difficult for a conservative Justice to believe and accept that women at the age of 17 and older who request a reproductive procedure understand that it is a right, not a privilege? Little girls, with or without their parents, need reproductive rights! While it seems like providing a place where safe affordable health care is given is the right thing to do, oddly enough it still needs to be reiterated to republicans…so let us say it over and over.  Women exercising their right to choose at this moment is constitutional! It’s about Freedom and CHOICE!   We have to agree that one would assume that Republicans, pledging to be Constitutionalists would back away from actions that clearly conflict with laws on the books, least we talk about the idea that freedom and choice sound like at least two beliefs conservatives seem to push whenever possible but of course it’s only when it suits their ideology … going out of their way to disrespect a woman’s intelligence and or the relationship with their doctor’s by legislating against it, is shameful.

What Woman wants to go through an era with trump in control again, let alone subject this BS to any other Woman or a little girl?

Step away from the lightener – reminder summer so brightener

 just another ongoing rant

So, the heat is turnt all the way up over the country, and this is about the time when some folks start to do stuff to themselves… right? What seems to be a great vehicle for both comedy and exposure of an awful practice that non-white men and women do is back in the news ~~ skin whitening. What made me sad among the obvious is how comical it is but, Comedian and risk-taker, Nick Cannon created a new character named, “Connor Smallnut.”  I have to admit, seeing him in White Face was concerning as I heard myself gasp! Why? We don’t like folks in “blackface,” and felt this cannot be good, but it actually exposes what seems to be a growing practice in the US … skin whitening, specifically by non-whites.

Here we are in 2022, come on people, and those pictures above are from 2/11/2018!  I saw a picture of Sammy Sosa in a cowboy outfit …no problem but looking at the photo, and I am totally open to any corrections, his skin is still being bleached and though I am not an expert it doesn’t look like the skin is holding up …

My problem, as stated again and again, years ago is that the industry often promotes lighter, brighter, whiter as being better and more likely to get you more work.

In October 2013, disturbing news regarding skin whitening popped up, and now, I find myself having to update my post from 5/28. I get a lot of digital news and while going through it, out pops an article … not the first, this was an attempt to voice a personal experience, knowledge of Skin Whitening products, how widespread it is, and who may be using it to improve their careers. I admit… Not only that, but I wondered what Century are we in and will common sense prevail.  I welcome all those willing to shine a light on this terrible practice and maybe a jab or two at those promoting this awful practice. However, I did find that folks continue to pull MJ into the skin whitening practice, and I would like to say and clear up something ~~  MJ did have vitiligo … the end.

In 2009, reports were that Asians spent an estimated $18 billion a year to appear pale. Today, this Billion-dollar business is … in my opinion taking advantage of women of all races, and their personal insecurities in an industry that has created among other things bobble heads, eating disorders, height/weight anxiety, liquid diets, long hair syndrome and many more creative ways that make folks unsuredoubtfulhesitantself-conscious, making them reactive not proactive. Apparently, otherwise, reasonably smart folks believe lighter brighter, and whiter is more likely to increase your status as well. I will say it again, it is sad and very disturbing

I have to ask why, after reading that in the year 2013, well-known entertainers are using Skin Whitening products to cross over for more acceptance or work.  It would be easy to say … FYI, you’re still who you were before bleaching your skin, but the practice begs the question … are you getting more work, more hits on your site and more folks are hitting on you … what?

Because …

No matter how light you go, your personality is only as good as your authenticity …
