Smell something fishy at the FDA?

Change.org

Tell the FDA you have the right to know when your food is genetically modified.

Sign the Petition

The first genetically engineered (GE) meat approved for human consumption might soon be on its way to a supermarket near you – a fast-growing salmon developed by a company called AquaBounty Technologies.

But it gets fishier. If AquaBounty’s GE salmon is approved for sale, the FDA might decide to put it right next to normal salmon in the meat case, without any special labeling. Consumers would be none the wiser.

We deserve to know if the meat on our plate is genetically engineered or not. Companies and FDA officials shouldn’t keep us in the dark about the foods we eat or feed to our families.

Tell the FDA you want labels on genetically engineered foods so you can make an informed choice.

No labeling is a dangerous precedent to set for genetically modified foods. Recent drug recalls have shown us that just because the FDA approves something doesn’t mean it’s safe in the long term. Any adverse effects of genetically modified meat on people might not show up until it’s already been consumed by a large number of Americans. And by then it’s too late. Without labeling, it will be even harder to recognize and track problems that might be caused by GE foods.

AquaBounty Technologies’ own scientists are telling the FDA that its GE salmon is perfectly safe. But there’s no way they can prove these claims, and we can’t dump unlabeled GE salmon into the food supply on the word of the company that stands to make a profit.

The FDA is being heavily lobbied by AquaBounty Technologies about its forthcoming decision, and now needs to hear from concerned consumers like you about whether GE salmon should be labeled or not.

Tell the FDA to require labeling of genetically engineered salmon so that consumers can decide for themselves whether to buy and eat it.

It’s up to the FDA to keep our food supply safe, and it’s up to us to let the FDA know where consumers stand on GE foods.

Thanks for taking action

Emergency: Save the Senate …video of Angle

Republicans are now within reach of taking over the Senate. It’s likely to come down to just three races that are tied and where MoveOn members can make the difference. This is a true emergency—please make a contribution immediately, before tonight’s fundraising deadline.

There’s no point in sugarcoating this: If the election were held today, Republicans and their corporate benefactors would gain control of the House—and quite possibly the Senate.

That’s the nightmare scenario. It would spell an end to any hope of progress in the next two years—and quite possibly to Obama’s presidency.

But there are three key races that Republicans would have to win to take the Senate, and all are tied. Meaning, they’re close enough for us to tip the balance. We need to help these Democratic candidates raise enough money to get their message out—despite all the corporate ads targeting them—and run serious get-out-the-vote efforts.

This is a true emergency: We must stop the Republicans from taking over the Senate. There’s a critical fundraising deadline at midnight tonight. Please, make the most generous contribution you can afford, immediately:

https://pol.moveon.org/give/savethesenate.html?aa=5&id=24154-17809870-5a3ALlx&t=3

Here are the three progressive candidates in tight races who need our help right now:

We’re adding Alexi Giannoulias in Illinois to our Progressive Heroes list today because he’s locked in a tight race for President Obama’s old Senate seat, and because he’s running a populist campaign focused on taking on the corporate special interests and cleaning up Washington, D.C. This is the closest race in the country: Every poll in this race for the past two months has been tied.

Sen. Patty Murray

is the highest-ranking Democratic woman in the Senate. She supported the public option and the fight for clean energy jobs, and has worked with other pro-choice Democratic women senators to eliminate egregious gender disparities in insurance coverage. Her Republican challenger significantly out-raised her in the last three months, and Murray needs our help to win.

And Sen. Harry Reid in Nevada is facing Sharron Angle, the tea party fanatic who wants to “phase out” Social Security and Medicare, withdraw from the United Nations, and abolish the Department of Education.1 The latest polls show her tied—or even slightly ahead, and just yesterday her campaign announced that they’ve raised a record-breaking $14 million in the past three months.2

Can you chip in to these candidates’ campaigns and help stop the takeover?

Thanks for all you do.

The YouTube Symphony Orchestra returns!

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 03:12 PM PDT

(Cross-posted from the YouTube Blog)
The world’s first online collaborative orchestra is back, and this time a new round of performers will be playing their part onstage at the iconic Sydney Opera House.
It seems like just yesterday that Carnegie Hall was abuzz with a sold-out performance that made headlines around the globe. Ninety-six musicians arrived in New York City, from over 30 countries, to perform together after uploading an audition video and then being chosen by the YouTube community to be a part of the exciting event. We are thrilled to invite you to audition for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011.
In addition to the new locale, this “second act” includes another new element: “Mothership,” a musical work from composer Mason Bates. Right now, it’s still missing something: an improvisation provided by you. Take a listen to it here and start planning your contribution.

This time there are two ways to audition, for the classical audition perform the pieces listed on the channel according to instrument. For the opportunity to contribute your own creation, choose the solo improviser—it doesn’t matter if you play trumpet, viola or didgeridoo. If you proceed to the final stages, you will join musicians from around the world in a week-long music summit with Grammy-award-winning conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, who returns to guide the orchestra.

The YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011 is a collaboration with partners the Sydney Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker and many other leading institutions of the classical music world. This event is being made possible by Hyundai.

Be the next Gone Google ad

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 11:08 AM PDT

A little over a year ago, we began the “Go Google” campaign with just a single billboard in four U.S. cities. In the past year, we’ve grown from two to three million businesses and more than 30 million users on Google Apps; through the campaign, thousands have shared their Gone Google stories via tweets, photos and submissions to our community map. We’ve heard from companies across the country and around the world; from large enterprises such as Konica Minolta and leading global food retailer Ahold, to small businesses like Bowery Lane Bicycles in New York and Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss in Oregon, we’re excited to hear how Google Apps has helped your business increase productivity, reduce costs and innovate.

As we kick off the next wave of our global campaign this week in airports and train stations in 11 major cities in nine countries around the globe, we want to use this opportunity to invite the millions of companies and schools using Google Apps to tell us why your organization would like to be featured in our next global Gone Google ad campaign. For this contest, we’ll pick up to five companies/schools in each of the following regions: the Americas, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and Asia Pacific. The winners will be featured in an upcoming outdoor ad campaign in each region early next year.

To participate, tell us your organization’s Gone Google story, and create a “sample ad” using our template:

We encourage you to be creative and have fun with your ad! (You may want to check out some of our previous ads for some inspiration.) Once you create your ad, be sure to publish and share it with us. (Bonus points for tweeting it with the #gonegoogle hashtag.) For complete rules and details, visit our contest site. We can’t wait to see your ads, and look forwarding to putting your organization’s name in lights!

And if you are still thinking about going Google, we encourage you to check out the Go Google cloud calculator to learn more about the benefits of switching to Google Apps.

Palin for Congress? a message from Paul Begala

Only 20 Days Left Until The Election

Make no mistake about it, Sarah Palin is basically running for Congress this year.

Her name might not appear on any ballot but Palin-endorsed Republican clones are running and many of them are in too-close-to-call races, which makes things a little too close for comfort!

The latest outrage is that the US Chamber of Commerce — a multimillion-dollar corporate lobbying machine — broadcast the HOME PHONE NUMBER of one of our Democratic candidates. The candidate’s daughters couldn’t use the phone anymore because of what her spokesperson called, “harassment and abuse.”

How’s that for family values?

Meanwhile, Ms. Palin is raising money and motivating her base. She probably thinks she can see a Republican majority from her front porch.

You can turn Ms. Palin’s vision into a Wasilla mirage. The DCCC’s October Rapid Response Fund ads are already making a difference and their impressive get out the voter efforts have mobilized thousands of volunteers. But my friends at the DCCC need your urgent support to hit their goal of $500,000 before Friday’s deadline to wire urgently-needed money to Democratic campaigns.

Contribute $5, $10 or more to the October Rapid Response Fund before Friday’s midnight deadline. Your generous support is urgently needed to help Democrats defeat Sarah Palin-backed candidates in make-or-break districts.

This is no longer your father’s Republican Party. I’ve been through a lot of elections, but I have never seen a group of Republican candidates as far-right as this group of Palin’s recruits.

The DCCC is just $242,226 away from their Rapid Response goal for this Friday’s Midnight Deadline. They have Rapid Response ads ready to go up in every battleground district where a Palin protege is running so Democrats can hit back hard against their Palin-esque tall tales.

Contribute $5, $10 or more to the October Rapid Response Fund before Friday’s midnight deadline. Your generous support is urgently needed to help Democrats defeat Sarah Palin-backed candidates in make-or-break districts.

Every dollar you give can be the difference between victory for one of these Palin Republicans or their defeat.

Mayor to Angle: Come to Dearborn (via Anderson Cooper 360)

Martina Stewart AC360° Digital Producer Editor’s Note: Watch Anderson’s interview with Dearborn Mayor John O’Reilly. (CNN) – Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle will soon receive a personal invitation to visit Dearborn, Michigan – and a bit of the history lesson in the process.
