When you didn’t read the bill … and it cost your state $3billion

The GOP voted to strip millions of their health care yesterday, and some in the media covered it like a sporting event. Several Republicans aren’t even sure of what they voted for — like Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY), who didn’t realize the bill would cost his state $3 billion.

Investigate Trump’s ties to Russia

Trump is undermining U.S. democracy

TrumpPutin

Demand Congress to start an independent commission to investigate Trump’s, Pence’s and all senior aides’ ties to Russia.

 TAKE ACTION!

Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael Flynn just resigned after he was caught in a lie about communication with Russia.1

But here’s the scary, yet unsurprising, part: Trump’s administration knew Flynn lied about Russia an entire MONTH ago. And leaks from Trump aides say the only reason Trump pushed him out was because of news stories about the incident.2 Things were so bad, that Flynn was under threat of being BLACKMAILED by the Russian government.3 Trump is putting our country’s safety and democracy at risk. Now isn’t the time to let him and his fascist administration’s lies go unchecked.

It’s past time for Congress to investigate Trump’s administration–and they need to do it NOW before it’s too late.

Tell Congress: Start an independent commission to investigate Trump’s ties to Russia.

This is first and foremost about democracy. While Trump is lying about millions of voter fraud cases, the real threat to our democracy is  Putin’s involvement in our election and Russia’s illicit ties to Trump and his administration. But even more threatening is Congress’ refusal to do anything about it. Black people have fought to make our democracy real and we won’t stand for any threats, foreign or domestic, to our ability to participate in free and fair elections.

There’s too much evidence pointing to a cover-up of what could be acts of treason by Trump’s administration. Let alone the terrifying reality that Trump and the Russian government might have rigged the 2016 presidential election.  During the 2016 presidential campaign, phone records indicate that members from Trump’s campaign team had repeated contact with senior Russian officials a year before the election.4 Even Trump said at a campaign rally that “he hoped Russian intelligence services had stolen Hillary Clinton’s emails and would make them public.”5 More disturbing, a report released publicly in January by U.S. intelligence agencies revealed that the Russian government intervened in the presidential election.6 And now Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who campaigned aggressively for Trump, is refusing to remove himself from any role that would involve an investigation.7 But Congress has a unique opportunity to once and for all stand up to Trump and his illegitimate presidency.

Demand Congress investigate Trump and restore the integrity of democracy back into the hands of the people.

We certainly cannot rely on Senate Republicans to do any investigation. A transparent, fair and honest investigation should be:

  • run by an independent commission that can formulate a much broader and deeper investigation than the Senate Republicans on the Intelligence Committee.
  • contain public hearings that require testimony from President Trump, Vice President Pence, Attorney General Sessions and other top aides in the Trump administration.
  • and should force the administration to release all relevant tapes, documents, and records.

What the Trump Administration is doing is more than an insult — it’s an injustice. For every battle to dismantle Jim Crow and abolish “separate but equal” laws, to make sure a person has the right to vote, to earn a fair wage, to gain access to quality education, to hold police and prosecutors accountability, to live and love freely, Black people have been on the frontlines. Too many people will suffer from Trump’s attack on our democracy — we can’t let that happen.

Congress can no longer pretend there’s a real leader in the White House. This has gone on long enough.

Indigenous territories are being subject to violence and the rights of indigenous communities threatened

“Where are we going to live? If our homes are destroyed, what future awaits our upcoming generations?”
– Ronald Suárez, Shipibo indigenous activist

Ronald Suárez Maynas, president of the Shipibo Conibo Xetebo Council, outlined the serious threats facing the Peruvian Amazon during the 16th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

The indigenous communications expert from the Shipibo people demanded that the Peruvian government guarantee and expedite processes of communal land titling, put the brakes on natural resource extraction, and suspend all mega-projects that pose a threat to uncontacted indigenous communities, especially projects tainted by corruption.

Suárez explained before the Permanent Forum how indigenous territories are being subject to violence and the rights of indigenous communities threatened. He demanded that governments, in particular the Peruvian government, recognize the self-determination of his indigenous people.

ACA repeal by the numbers sherrodbrown.com

900,000 — the number of Ohioans who are at risk of losing coverage under the newly-passed House Republican healthcare plan.

200,000 — the number of Ohioans currently receiving care for opioid addictions who could lose coverage.

150 — the number of people we need to take action today. And it starts with you carmen.

The ACA repeal plan comes to the Senate next. We have to show that we’re going to fight to keep it from reaching President Trump’s desk.

Do you have or know anyone who has one of these?

These are just some of the pre-existing conditions insurance companies could discriminate against. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates roughly 28 percent of non-elderly Ohioans had pre-existing conditions covered under the Affordable Care Act in 2015.

That’s over 1.9 MILLION people in Ohio alone who stand to see their premiums soar because of conditions for which they desperately need care.

Republicans think passing their ACA repeal is a win — but the truth is, it’s a huge loss for all Americans. Let’s make sure we have the resources to continue fighting this plan as it goes along.

If you are not “in the fight” to defeat the GOP, now is the time. Join us.

Yesterday, most Americans were sickened by the GOP passage of the utterly heartless American Health Care Act, or TrumpCare, on a 217-213 vote in the House.

But don’t try seeing your doctor to care for your queasiness, since this bill:

  • Takes health care coverage away from 24 million Americans
  • Raises premiums as much as seven times over current costs
  • Allows insurance companies to limit payments for catastrophic illnesses, meaning Americans who have employer-based health plans would pay WAY more out of pocket if they got sick
  • Guts $880 billion from Medicaid, hurting older Americans, kids with special needs, and working families
  • Defunds Planned Parenthood

Got a preexisting condition?  Sorry, you are now out of luck.  And here’s a partial list of those conditions under TrumpCare:

AIDS/HIV, acid reflux, acne, ADD, addiction, Alzheimer’s/dementia, anemia, aneurysm, angioplasty, anorexia, anxiety, arrhythmia, arthritis, asthma, atrial fibrillation, autism, bariatric surgery, basal cell carcinoma, bipolar disorder, blood clot, breast cancer, bulimia, bypass surgery, celiac disease, cerebral aneurysm, cerebral embolism, cerebral palsy, cerebral thrombosis, cervical cancer, colon cancer, colon polyps, congestive heart failure, COPD, Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, DMD, depression, diabetes, disabilities, Down syndrome, eating disorder, enlarged prostate, epilepsy, glaucoma, gout, heart disease, heart murmur, heartburn, hemophilia, hepatitis C, herpes, high cholesterol, hypertension, hysterectomy, kidney disease, kidney stones, kidney transplant, leukemia, lung cancer, lupus, lymphoma, mental health issues, migraines, MS, muscular dystrophy, narcolepsy, nasal polyps, obesity, OCD, organ transplant, osteoporosis, pacemaker, panic disorder, paralysis, paraplegia, Parkinson’s disease, pregnancy, restless leg syndrome, schizophrenia, seasonal affective disorder, seizures, sickle cell disease, skin cancer, sleep apnea, sleep disorders, stent, stroke, thyroid issues, tooth disease, tuberculosis, and ulcers.

Just to name a few. And chances are, you or someone you know has dealt with something (or multiple things) on this list.

Quite simply, this vote is a betrayal of the 3 million Washingtonians who have pre-existing conditions and are counting on quality health care to literally keep them alive.

In Washington State, GOP members of Congress Dave Reichert, Jamie Herrera Beutler, Dan Newhouse, and especially Cathy McMorris Rodgers must be defeated in 2018.

But that takes hard work and resources NOW, in 2017, to:

  • Gather the precise data we need to target voter turnout to win — this is a long and detail oriented effort
  • Educate voters on the REAL positions of their GOP members of Congress — this means multiple conversations with real people, not TV ads or flyers
  • Build the volunteer infrastructure needed to make sure people vote — to do this we need to hire staff to help organize and support the thousands of volunteers we need

In 2017 we have three SIGNIFICANT State Senate races that will have HUGE impacts on our ability in Washington State to protect heath care for Washingtonians and ultimately block the impacts of TrumpCare if it passes. These races are:

#1 – Manka Dhingra in the 45th LD

The Republicans have vowed to raise $5 million for the Republican in this race, a record setting amount. The GOP candidate, Jinyoung Englund, is a hardcore conservative who opposes the ACA and was a staffer for Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Jeb Bush, and even Paul Ryan. We must win this seat and Manka is the perfect candidate to do it, but the Republicans are all-in and we need to match them.

#2 – Michelle Rylands in the 31st LD

This race in rural South King County is in the middle of Reichert’s congressional district and competing (and winning!) here is essential to building the infrastructure to beat Reichert in 2018. The GOP incumbent, Phil Fortunato, is an anti-Obamacare extremist who’s entirely unfit for office, while Michelle Rylands is a PTA leader and union member who will fight hard to make sure people have the health care they need.

#3 – Karen Hardy in the 7th LD

This is our chance to campaign in the heart of McMorris Rodgers’ district. We build our party in Eastern Washington by campaigning hard in these rural areas, where many people do have major health care needs and will see major impacts if TrumpCare passes into law. Karen is a long-time activist for health care and she’s the right person to lead the charge against the Republican Shelly Short – another former McMorris Rodgers staffer.

We’ve recruited 3 great women to run in the special elections this year — now they need your time and support.

The Resistance is our year-round fundraising program to raise dedicated dollars for the field organizing efforts we need to win in these districts and more. If you sign up to make a small monthly contribution, we can make the sustained and year-round investments in organizing and party building it’ll take to win across the state. All of the money raised by monthly contributions through the Resistance will be invested directly into field organizing efforts.

The fight to stop TrumpCare – and retake Congress by beating Reichert, Herrera Beutler, Newhouse, and McMorris Rodgers – will be a long one, and it’s far from over. Your sustained support is CRITICAL to being able to organize and win in these districts across the state. Click here to join us!
