Drone medal outranks Purple Heart?

votevets.org
Have you heard about the Pentagon‘s new Distinguished Warfare Medal?It ranks above the Purple Heart and is awarded to drone operators and cyberwar practitioners for “extraordinary achievement” in a post 9/11military operation.

A number of VoteVets members have expressed their opinions about the distinction, but we want to hear from you, as well.

Do you think the medal should rank above the Purple Heart? Let us know here:

Here’s a few of the comments we received on our Facebook page:

Christopher C. No problem with the medal itself. Serious problem with its hierarchy ranking: It should not be above medals awarded for combat actions. I am seriously surprised that anyone would think it is reasonable to giving it that level of precedence.

Ethan C. I think their service should be recognized with some kind of award but combat valor medals recognize real life and death situations on the actual battlefield. Combat awards should be given the highest placement.

Let us know what you think and we’ll be sure to share your thoughts with Senator Hagel after he’s confirmed as our next Secretary of Defense.

There’s been a lot of conversation about the new medal in the traditional media and online. I look forward to hearing your thoughts, as well.

Faces of Diabetes …

We can stop Diabetes.

How does it feel knowing what a difference you made for the many Faces of Diabetes in 2012?

Thanks for your support!I bet it feels something like this…

Your support helped us reach our $1 million end of year fundraising goal. And thanks to your generosity, the American Diabetes Association accomplished more than we ever thought possible for the many Faces of Diabetes in 2012. Here are just a few of the amazing achievements made possible with your help:

  • In Georgia, Washington and Florida, bills have been signed into law to make sure schools are safe for children with diabetes;
  • We began research on how to manage diabetes during pregnancy to prevent the future onset of diabetes in children;
  • Started insulin gene therapy research for type 1 diabetes;
  • Fought for new protections under the Affordable Care Act, including access to free preventative care and prohibiting discrimination against children and teens because of diabetes;
  • More than 60,000 people attended our free American Diabetes Association EXPO® events to receive life-saving diabetes and health information and advice.

Thank you for everything you’ve helped us accomplish in 2012. And for the many millions of people you’re going to help this year.

Happy New Year,
Larry Hausner

Protect All the Critical Habitat Necessary for the Jaguar’s Recovery

Center for Biological Diversity

JaguarJaguars are returning to the Southwest, part of their native range since time immemorial. While we celebrate the homecoming of these beautiful animals, their future is far from secure: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to designate only a portion of their potential habitat as protected “critical habitat.”

We must protect the canyons and forests where jaguars can thrive from being destroyed by devastating mines, sprawling subdivisions and the draining of rivers and streams. Endangered animals with protected critical habitat are more than twice as likely to be recovering as those without.

Please take action now to tell the Service to protect all of the habitat the jaguars need to recover in the Southwest and give them a real welcome home.
