Two simple words, but they convey a world of meaning. Without your work, your time and your support, we would not be celebrating.

We’ve been through a lot together this year. Just think about it: since the beginning of 2012, we’ve seen attack after attack on women’s reproductive health, including attempts to roll back insurance coverage for birth control and other preventive health services we won under the new health care law. Our This Is Personal campaign is just one way we’re pushing back — and so far have prevailed!

Speaking of the health care law, the House of Representatives voted more than thirty times to gut the Affordable Care Act. Together, we stopped them in their tracks. The Center also helped defend the ACA in the courts, filing a friend of the court brief in the Supreme Court on behalf of sixty organizations. And of course, the Court upheld the law’s main provisions.

Meanwhile, members of Congress attempted to hollow out the programs so many women and families count on. They tried to cut taxes yet again for the most fortunate among us. Together we stopped them for now, but our struggles are far from over, and we’re calling on you again to make your voice heard during the budget debates in the year-end “lame duck” session of Congress.

And, just this month we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Center, and this summer we cheered the women athletes at the Olympics, which were dubbed the “Title IX Olympics” during what was also Title IX’s 40th anniversary year.

So much to celebrate and so much still to do. Thank you for everything you’ve done, and for everything we know you WILL do in the months to come. We’re truly grateful. For now, get some rest and enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends!

Sincerely,

More celebs help tribes’ push for sacred SD land …Get INVOLVED!

By KRISTI EATON

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — More celebrities are backing an online campaign to raise money so that Native American tribes in South Dakota can purchase land they consider sacred.

An online campaign to raise money so Native American tribes in South Dakota can purchase land they consider sacred has gained steam with a growing list of celebrities backing the effort. P Diddy and Bette Midler have tweeted their support for the effort to purchase nearly 2,000 acres in the Black Hills of South Dakota. P Diddy and Bette Midler are the latest big names to throw their support behind a fundraising effort to buy nearly 2,000 acres of pristine prairie grass in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Three days after the campaign began, P Diddy tweeted: “Help save the Sioux Nation! Click here,” and linked to the website. Midler also lent her voice, tweeting: “Incredible story re the Sioux Sacred Grounds. Donate what you can.”

More than $18,000 had been raised as of Sunday afternoon — $6,000 flowed in immediately after P Diddy’s tweet. The campaign will last through Nov. 30, when the tribes of the Great Sioux Nation must have $9 million in order to purchase the land.

The tribes have raised $7 million so far for the 1,942 acres, which they call Pe’ Sla (pay shlaw), or “old baldy.” There are Sioux tribes in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska and Canada.

The property is important to their creation story, and tribal members have long held ceremonies there. When the land was put up for sale, tribal members worried it would be developed because of its proximity to Mount Rushmore.

Landowners Leonard and Margaret Reynolds canceled a public auction of the property earlier this year after tribal members expressed outrage. The Reynolds then accepted the tribes’ bid to purchase the land for $9 million if they have the money by Nov. 30.

The couple has repeatedly said they will not speak publicly about the land sale.

P Diddy and Midler join actor Ezra Miller and hip-hop producer Sol Guy showing their support for the cause.

Miller, who appears in the recently released movie “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” and Sol Guy flew to South Dakota last month to film a nine-minute documentary-style video about the land that is being used as part of the online campaign.

Miller said the three days he spent in South Dakota learning about the land and the Lakota tribes was life-altering.

“From the moment I arrived to the moment I departed, I was struck repeatedly by an unshakable sensation that this land truly carried something unspeakably important,” Miller said in an email interview with The Associated Press. “There is a motion and a beauty out there in those hills that words cannot do justice.”

He said the fact that the Lakota tribes have done Sundance ceremonies on the land for thousands of years is a “magical reality,” and that America has erased too much of the land’s true history.

Sol Guy, whose TV show “4Real” airing on MTV Canada and the National Geographic Channel has taken celebrities such as Cameron Diaz to Peru and Joaquin Phoenix to the Amazon, said he has been busy sharing the information with his various networks to get the word out and is confident the tribes will be successful in raising all the money.

“My first hope is not to demand people to give money,” Sol Guy said. “If they can afford it, great. But I think what’s more important is that people take it in and learn the history and spread the word and have the conversations about it.”

Chase Iron Eyes, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who started the online campaign and appeared in the video, said he wants the celebrity endorsements to help raise money, but more than anything, he hopes it will widen the network of people who are thinking about the land and what it means for the tribes.

New Resources: Tax Credits Outreach Materials

Spread the Word

Help us make sure families around the country know about valuable state and federal tax credits.

National Women's Law Center

Here’s a sad fact: Each year millions of American families forgo valuable income when they fail to claim tax credits for which they are eligible.

That means that millions of dollars of tax credits go unclaimed every year. Tax credits — including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC) — provide an indispensable financial boost to vulnerable women and families struggling to make ends meet. But women and their families have to know about these tax benefits in order to claim them.

This is why we need your help to spread the word about tax credits. And this is why we are so delighted to debut our new and improved Tax Credits Outreach Resources. We’ve made it easier than ever for advocates to spread the word about these credits.

Our new resources include:

  • State-specific outreach fliers in English and Spanish
  • Our Toolkit for Advocates, with sample:
    • Newsletter
    • LTE
    • PSA script
    • Press release
    • Social Media tools
    • List of what to bring to free tax preparation sites
  • Fact sheets on tax credits for families and tax information for domestic violence advocates
  • A link to sign up to become an NWLC Community Partner

If you work or volunteer with families that are likely eligible for tax credits and/or in a program that supports children and families, you can help get the word out! Simply hanging fliers in classrooms, hallways, and offices, sending them home with young children, or talking about tax credits at parent meetings could make a difference for the families you work with. Be sure to let us know how you’re spreading the word about tax credits, or if there’s anything we can do to help, by emailing Amy Qualliotine at aqualliotine@nwlc.org.

Thanks for all that you do to help families learn about tax credits!
