| From the day President Obama took office, Democrats have worked to rebuild our country’s economy, put into place the basic financial reforms needed to empower and protect consumers, and lay down a new foundation for growth.
Republicans made a different choice: They locked arms with the special interests and voted to protect the insurance companies, credit card lenders, and bankers on Wall Street. The GOP embraced a singular goal: opposition to the President’s agenda. Now Republicans are scheming to win back Congress. With a majority, they’ll do everything they can to reverse the progress Democrats have made. They’ll turn back the clock on behalf of their special interest friends, their big donors, and the extreme right-wing elements that have taken over their party. But we have a plan to beat the GOP. Since May, we’ve been focused on an unprecedented push to elect Democrats who will fight alongside President Obama. With the help of supporters like you, we’ve launched the strongest, most sophisticated effort this party has ever put together for an election like this. They’re working to elect conservatives like Alaska Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller who argue that unemployment benefits are “not constitutionally authorized” and that we should end Social Security. They’re fighting for people like Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul who believe that civil rights should be up for debate in this country because they think that businesses should have the right to discriminate based on race, gender, disability, or any other factor. In politics, Labor Day is traditionally marked as the start of election season. That means today is the first working day of the fall campaign.
This is when your grassroots contributions have the greatest possible impact. The Republicans are pooling their resources for another wave of attack ads — and we must have the resources to counter this onslaught.
My strategists at the DCCC are preparing to launch their first major round of television advertising. We know the Republicans will be running in 9 more districts by Sunday.
The truth is we know when we have the resources to get our message out and turn out the vote — Democrats win. That’s why I need your urgent help to raise $500,000 for our Emergency Rapid Response fund before Friday’s media buy deadline.

Americans Vs Republicans
Prior to a vote on the small business jobs bill, Senator Olympia Snowe, who eventually voted no, described her frustration with the countless delays this legislation has encountered, by her Republican colleagues nonetheless…. (more info)
Senate Democrats today discussed The Clean Energy Jobs and Oil Spill Accountability Act that was introduced earlier this week. Democrats are trying to pass this legislation to create jobs, lower consumers’ energy costs, protect the environment, and hold BP accountable for the Gulf Coast oil spill. Senate Republicans want taxpayers to foot the bill for BP’s disaster and let BP use endless legal battles to run out the clock on those whose livelihoods they destroyed. The Republican plan also does nothing to create jobs or reduce our nation’s dependence on oil. … (more info)
Senator Jeff Sessions today attempted to claim that President Obama’s judicial nominees have moved at a considerably faster pace than President George W. Bush‘s did. False.

A new way to hold Republicans accountable

| With Congress’s August recess now under way, Republican members of Congress are starting to show up at Tea Party events and campaign rallies all over the country.
We saw last year during the fight for health reform that this is a time when the extremists run rampant. Remember “death panels?” This year, Republicans are looking to have it both ways, trying to appeal to independent voters while making promises to the Tea Party crowd to pursue an extreme right-wing agenda if they regain control of Congress. We don’t — but I sure wish we did. That’s where the “Accountability Project” comes in. It’s a platform for citizens to document Republican candidates and their public statements at local events, as well as their campaign tactics. The Accountability Project allows you to submit videos, recordings, and other items for publication online, so that candidates see that there’s a cost to their dishonest statements — and so that everyday citizens can see what their Republican candidates for office are saying. The American people deserve an honest debate — and far too often, candidates try to make misleading attacks and false claims under the radar. This project seeks to shine a light on those practices, and you have a crucial role to play in making it happen.
