Tell the EPA: Keep Diesel Out of Our Drinking Water

Fracking Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” is a dangerous drilling technique threatening water, air, wildlife and public health all over the United States. It’s done by blasting millions of gallons of a chemical-water-sand mixture deep into the Earth to break up rock formations to harvest oil and gas.

In 2005, in a law known as the “Halliburton loophole,” Congress exempted from the Safe Drinking Water Act all fracking chemicals except one: diesel fuel. The Environmental Protection Agency has just asked for public comment on how it should regulate the use of diesel fuel in fracking.

Evidence is mounting throughout the country that fracking chemicals are making their way into aquifers and drinking water, and diesel contains the toxic substances benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. Risking more chemical contamination of our drinking water is a no-go.

Take action to tell the EPA to ban fracking with diesel without delay.

Earth: mobilized. Keep going!

Your donations help power the movement.

Approximately one billion people in 192  countries took action for Earth Day 2012! From Cairo to Beijing, Melbourne  to Rome, Rio to St. Louis, communities everywhere stood united to Mobilize the  Earth™. The accomplishments are too numerous to name and pouring in every day.

Earth Day Network and its partners worked  together on events across Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and other countries  throughout the Middle East. Our office in Kolkata coordinated nearly 700 events in India alone. There  were massive rallies in New York, Montreal and Seoul, to name a few. The rally  in Washington, D.C., by the steps of the Capitol, was watched all over the  globe as it was streamed live on the web.

More than a day of  service, Earth Day 2012 has been weeks of mobilization that are growing and  galvanizing the environmental movement, making our leaders take notice, and  holding them accountable.

Through Earth Day Network’s Campaign for Communities,  the number of elected officials participating in Earth Day events around the  world was one of the highest we have ever seen. This Earth Day renewed the  work that local governments are doing not only to clean up their communities  and spread environmental awareness but to actually reduce global warming  pollution in the face of national and international inaction.

Thousands of  students from 291 universities in 6 continents, 49 countries, and 36 U.S.  states came together for MobilizeU. Tens of thousands of students have been activated through  MobilizeU, and more than 5.5 million students have been impacted as their  universities were mobilized.

In the U.S., our work led the White House to host its first  summit on environmental education, announce the creation of a special taskforce  on environmental education, and issue an official Earth Day proclamation on the  benefits of green schools. Moreover, the Department of Education announced the  first round of winners in the Green Ribbon Schools program – a monumental  accomplishment that has been years in the making for the entire movement.

And, after only two years…

We reached A Billion Acts of Green®!

A Billion Acts of Green is a global referendum on the  environment, and your pledges have made it the largest environmental service  campaign in the world. It shows the breadth of support for strong, coordinated  action to deal with our most pressing environmental challenges. And we’re going  to take this achievement to world leaders and demand just that.

But, the campaign isn’t over…

Continue to add your  commitments to A Billion Acts of Green as we make our way to the NEXT  billion!

April 22, 2012 – Join us to Mobilize the Earth

At the recent United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 17) in Durban, South Africa, world leaders punted once again. Instead of taking meaningful action on climate change today, they put off creation of a global emission treaty until 2020 — a commitment few believe will be honored without massive public intervention. Anticipating this failure, Earth Day Network and our global partners, including Tck Tck Tck, met in Durban to develop a plan for global action in advance of the next major meeting of world leaders at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June.

Our plan calls for using Earth Day as a springboard to pressure world leaders. We will organize a global coalition of environmental, faith based, and human rights groups that together with nascent movement building organizations will take action on Earth Day, April 22nd 2012 and Mobilize the Earth™. Together we will demand immediate action to reverse the damage of climate change and other environmental tragedies. Stay tuned for details to come shortly on how you too can Mobilize the Earth™!

Other News:

Mayors and local elected officials from around the world did make history by joining together to sign the Durban Adaptation Charter for Local Governments, requiring cities to increase their mitigation and adaptation efforts immediately. (Read more about the Charter at the Earth Day Network blog)

On December 5th, Earth Day Network, in partnership with National Religious Coalition of Creation Care (NRCCC), hosted an event in Durban where Ela Ghandi and other prominent women faith leaders spoke about the importance of women’s voices in the environmental movement and the need for simple solutions to address carbon emissions. Together, Earth Day Network and NRCCC will continue to encourage faith communities to implement sustainable initiatives in their everyday lives and places of worship.
