I can’t help but wonder what their constituents will say.

I just got back from the floor of the Senate, where Republicans yet again decided to put their own political interests ahead of the rights of women by blocking the Paycheck Fairness Act.

President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act nearly 40 ago, but loopholes still remain that have allowed women in America to be paid an average of 78 cents for every dollar men make doing the same job.

It’s an injustice. It’s unthinkable that there are elected leaders who think pay equity isn’t an issue and voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act today.

Join me in speaking out and voice your support for equal pay for equal work with the Paycheck Fairness Act.

When wage discrimination exists, working families are hit the worst with many dependent on a mother’s income. If we continue to do nothing, over the course of a lifetime, women in America will earn an average $434,000 less than their male counterparts.

That’s an average of about $10,000 per year, or about the same amount of money costs to feed a family of four for the year.

Sign our petition and share why you believe women deserve equal pay for equal work.

While conservative Republicans in the Senate have blocked the bill again (as they have for more than 10 years), our fight is not over. I am deeply committed to working with my colleagues on finally eliminating the wage gap between men and women.

Paycheck fairness impacts everyone. That’s why I ask you to continue to speak out and give voice to the Paycheck Fairness Act by sharing your story about why we need equal pay for equal work.

For me, I look at my three kids – Michael, Jack and Maggie – three equally incredible and bright children. I don’t want Maggie and girls like her across the country to grow up in a world where they’ll earn less if they choose the same career track as their brothers.

With paycheck fairness, we can make sure when all our daughters enter the workforce, they’ll receive the equal pay they deserve. We won’t let today’s vote stop our progress.

Help Senator Mikulski(D-MD) get the Paycheck Fairness Act passed

“Ladies, put your lipstick on, square your shoulders, and get ready to do battle. This calls for a revolution!”

That’s what Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) said on the floor of the Senate during the successful fight to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. And now she needs our help for the next battle over equal pay — passing the Paycheck Fairness Act.

In the coming weeks, we expect a Senate vote on this vital legislation so we need you to contact your Senators today

Please tell your Senators to show their support for equal pay by co-sponsoring the Paycheck Fairness Act.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would deter wage discrimination by updating the nearly 50-year-old Equal Pay Act and barring retaliation against workers who disclose their own wages to coworkers.

No law prohibits employers from penalizing and even firing employees just for TALKING about their salaries. By leaving workers in the dark, workers are prevented from ever learning they are experiencing pay discrimination in their workplace.

Please take two minutes to tell your Senators to co-sponsor the Paycheck Fairness Act and support equal pay.

Your Senators need to hear from you now! The last time the Senate voted on the Paycheck Fairness Act, in 2010, it fell just a few votes short of moving forward. Women and their families can’t afford for that to happen again.

Last month, Wisconsin repealed its Equal Pay Enforcement Act. In the run-up to that vote, a state legislator said: “You could argue that money is more important for men. I think a guy in their first job, maybe because they expect to be a breadwinner someday, may be a little more money-conscious.” Oh, really? Women aren’t breadwinners? And it’s okay to discriminate because women are expecting to be taken care of? So much so that Wisconsin doesn’t need a strong fair pay law? Sorry, pal; Wisconsin DOES need better fair pay laws — in fact, women across the nation need stronger fair pay laws. We need the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 797). In the next few weeks, we expect a vote on this important bill. The vote could come at any moment, so we need you to contact your Senators today. Tell your senators to support fair pay: Cosponsor and support the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 797)! The Paycheck Fairness Act would deter wage discrimination by closing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and barring retaliation against workers who disclose their own wages to coworkers. Truth to Power … just the facts from Stephanie

I think the first item in this week’s tipsheet — The Life of Julia — lays out the impact this election will have on millions of American women more clearly than anything this campaign has done so far.
It’s a great tool for the Truth Team and our goal of making sure everyone gets the facts they need. So let’s get to it:
#1 The Life of Julia The Life of Julia is an interactive online tool that looks at how President Obama’s policies help one woman over her lifetime compared to Mitt Romney‘s plans. Whether it’s allowing young people to stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26, expanding access to Pell Grants, or passing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that allows women to stand up for their right to equal pay for equal work, President Obama has fought to help women of all ages. Under a Romney administration, Julia’s story would look a lot different: Romney would reverse many of President Obama’s accomplishments to pay for tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires. Take a lookat how the policies the President has put in place would affect a woman at each stage of her life, then share it with others:

#2 Romney: Too extreme for women Romney’s right-wing positions — like promising to “get rid of” Planned Parenthood, refusing to say whether he would have signed or vetoed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and his over-the-top praise for controversial public figures like Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell — make it clear just how out of touch he is when it comes to women’s issues. We put together a videohighlighting some of Romney’s most extreme stances. Check it out, and make sure others see it, too:

#3 Romney: “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth” On Tuesday, our nation marked the first anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death. Romney and his allies spent the day claiming that anyone would have made the same call President Obama did. Of course, with the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy for Romney to boast that he would’ve ordered the bin Laden mission. But his own past statements on the issue simply don’t back him up. We chronicled some of these statements— take a look and let others know how Romney felt about things in 2007:

#4 Standing up to the Koch brothers In case you missed my email earlier this week, I recorded a video responding to the Koch brothers’ latest dishonest attempt to smear the President’s energy record. We’re going to call this sort of BS when we see it. If you haven’t already, please pass the videoalong and help set the record straight:
