We joined forces with allies from across the country to deliver more than 2.1 million statements of support for the EPA‘s historic limits on carbon pollution. As Assistant Administrator Gina McCarthy told us, “You say 2 million casually, but that’s a lot of people.”

2.1 million is the greatest number of comments ever received for an environmental regulation in history. 2.1 million comments filled more than 50 boxes on the steps of the EPA. To give you some perspective, 2.1 million people couldn’t fit in all of the sports stadiums in the United States.

But you and I both know we need to keep the pressure on the fossil fuel industry and the well-funded interests that deny the reality of climate change.

I’m writing this from my home state, Colorado — where right now, there are nearly unimaginable forest fires we can see right out the window. A winter with little snow, record-high temperatures and a prolonged drought have combined to fuel some of the largest fires in the state’s history.

Here’s what’s even more alarming: Scientists say that as climate change accelerates, we can expect the risk of destructive fires to increase here in the West and all over the world.

That’s why we can’t just talk about climate change. We need to call on our leaders to take action — and we can’t wait any longer.

Here We Go Again—Another Fossil Fuel Industry Attack on Science

 

The House of Representatives will soon vote on yet another fossil fuel industry-backed bill, attacking clean air and public health. It is critical that we stand up for strong standards based on independent science, not false economic claims from big polluters.
The Gasoline Regulations Act (H.R. 4771) is an all-out attack on our clean air and public health. The bill would force the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to give undo weight to the industry’s economic claims when setting what should be, first and foremost, science-based standards that protect our health and environment.
The legislation delays standards that would save lives and save money by reducing sulfur in gasoline.
The bill also attacks standards that would limit ozone and other harmful air pollutants from power plants and global warming emissions from oil refineries. Some members of Congress may even attempt to amend the bill to prevent the EPA from moving forward with their historic draft standard to limit global warming pollution from new power plants.
Fossil fuel lobbyists and their allies in Congress are attacking the EPA with false claims about the impact that these proposed standards might have on gas prices. But we know that this bill will have no effect on fuel prices, but would have a lasting, negative impact on public health.
Congress needs to hear from Americans like you who support the EPA’s efforts to protect our health from dirty energy and dirty fuels.

Sign the petition to end fossil fuel subsidies

From June 20-22, the eyes of the world will be on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. World leaders, drawn by the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (aka “Rio+20”), will decide how to deal with a broad range of issues that affect the environment. Earth Day Network will be there to make sure your voices are heard.

Rio+20 offers a chance to jumpstart the green economy and chart a course to a sustainable future. But this will be next to impossible if fossil fuel subsidies continue hampering the progress of clean energy technology.
