I want to be the first to welcome you to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign! Our children are our future and taking care of them is the most important thing you and I can do. By asking your state governor to support summer meals programs on Care2, you’ve joined thousands of fellow Americans who are making our nation’s kids a priority — and connecting them with the healthy meals they need to grow, thrive and be happy.
As the national spokesperson for the No Kid Hungry campaign, you’ll be hearing from me throughout the year and also from my friend Billy Shore, founder of Share Our Strength.
All the best, Jeff Bridges
National Spokesperson, No Kid Hungry
ACTION ALERT To Support Healthy Food, Share This Video Now!
You may have heard that the House passed a controversial version of the Farm Bill last month that excludes the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps). It remains to be seen whether this bill can be reconciled with the Senate’s version passed earlier this year, but we are continuing to work to promote critical programs for healthy food and sustainable agriculture in the Farm Bill.
These programs stand a chance today because of YOU. Thank you for sending emails and making phone calls to improve the farm bill. To show my appreciation, I wanted to share with you a special sneak peek of our brand new video.
The video is a part of new analysis from UCS which presents even stronger evidence that shifting Farm Bill funding to fruits and vegetables—instead of ingredients used for processed foods—is vital for our health.
In fact, this video—which I’m emailing now only to our most active supporters—shows how our current food and farm policies like those in the Farm Bill are actually killing us. We now only have 54 days left until the current Farm Bill expires—it is more important than ever to spread the word and change our nation’s policies to support healthy food. Tell your friends about our video today!
When Svetlana Arizanovska found out she was pregnant, she was very excited. A mother of three daughters, Svetlana worked two jobs to support her family. By day, she worked for a medical supply company. At night, she worked at Wal-Mart.
At Wal-Mart, Svetlana often lifted heavy merchandise to stock the store’s shelves. Due to her pregnancy, her doctor told her not to lift more than 20 pounds — but Wal-Mart refused to comply. In fact, Wal-Mart has a policy saying pregnant employees are not eligible for reassignments to another position, even though reassignments are available when employees need them because of a disability. One day, while she was lifting heavy merchandise for Wal-Mart, Svetlana started bleeding. She told her boss, but he ignored her. The next morning, Svetlana went to the emergency room and realized her worst fears were true — she had miscarried.
No one should have to choose between her pregnancy, her health, and her job. But that’s exactly what happens to many women like Svetlana. Please help us fight for women facing challenges in the workplace and beyond. We need to raise $10,000 by midnight on Thursday. Click here to chip in $10 or more to help us reach our goal.
Employers typically accommodate workers with limitations due to a temporary disability and often accommodate workers with injuries — but when pregnant women need a temporary change in their job, many bosses refuse to make even the smallest adjustments. They may not know they’re breaking the law when they deny women like Svetlana the ability to work without compromising their health or the health of their pregnancies.
Too many pregnant women have been faced with a choice no one should have to make: Keep working and risk the health of their pregnancy — or lose their job. It’s time for employers to stop breaking the law by using pregnancy as an excuse to push women out of work. It’s up to us to take a stand against policies that punish women. Your donation will help us fight back. We depend on your support for our work on behalf of women and families.
Thank you, as always, for everything you do.
Sincerely,
Emily J. Martin Vice President and General CounselNational Women’s Law Center
P.S. We depend on your support to help us fight for women and their families. Please help us reach our $10,000 goal before midnight on Thursday.
United Healthcare: Cover Brantlee’s hearing aid and care
My son Brantlee failed his initial newborn hearing screen in April. Tricare/United Healthcare referred us off post to an audiologist. While at that appointment, we found out my son has unilateral sensionueral hearing loss with is moderate sloping. It was recommended that we give him a hearing aid so he has a fair shot at speech and quality of life. So that is what we did! United Healthcare said they would cover this. We recieved the aid on 5/8/13 and on 6/26/13 we rieceved a letter from United saying it was denied. On 7/8/13 we recieved an almost $3000 bill from his provider for the hearing aid. When I called UHC, they stated, this was not covered because the provider was inactive…yet they referred us to her! One representative even had the nerve to say “your son isn’t deaf enough.” Now though we are back to where we originally were that the provider is inactive all though they sent us there and we have our slip showing they sent us there and would cover these codes, they refuse to pay.
