7 Terrible State Bills

Recently, we discussed some of the terrible bills floating around out there in state legislatures. Here’s another look at some of the worst proposals, including a couple that were signed into law this week:

NORTH DAKOTA: The state’s Republican governor signed a trifecta of terrible anti-abortion bills, which are likely to have the effect of banning abortion in the state. One bill unconstitutionally bans abortion after just six weeks, which is before many women even know they’re pregnant. An even more insidious bill takes up the anti-abortion movement’s favorite new tactic: drastic overregulation of abortion clinics to all but guarantee that they will have to close. These so-called TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) laws are also moving in North Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, and Virginia.
KANSAS: A new bill will allow the state to quarantine HIV positive individuals, something Kansas actually banned back in 1988.
INDIANA: An anti-abortion bill was going to mandate forced ultrasounds before a woman is provided with the abortion pill. Lawmakers explain that they are dropping the controversial provision in order to focus on their real goal: regulating abortion clinics out of existence.
VIRGINIA: Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) signed a bill that will mandate that Virginians present photo identification when they vote, which will disproportionately impact young people, minorities, and the elderly.
KENTUCKY: The legislature passed a so-called “religious freedom” bill that allows individuals to ignore laws based on the vague notion of “sincerely held religious beliefs,” opening the door to discrimination against LGBT people, among other problems. Gov. Steve Beshear (D) vetoed the bill, but unfortunately his veto was overridden yesterday.
PENNSYLVANIA: Top Republicans in the state have yet to abandon a GOP plan to rig steal the White House by rigging the distribution of the state’s Electoral College votes. Republicans in Virginia, Florida, Wisconsin, and other states dropped the idea, but Pennsylvania Republicans are keeping it on the table.
ARKANSAS: In addition to its race to the bottom on abortion, Arkansas is considering some highly regressive tax changes. As part of an effort meant to stimulate growth, an Arkansas legislative committee passed two tax cuts that will largely benefit the rich and then rejected one that would benefit the working poor. A recent study found that state-level tax cuts don’t promote job growth.

Another week, another set of terrible proposals moving out in state legislatures.

The Gift Shop at Buffalo Trace Distillery today voluntarily recalled all non-expired products listed below due to mislabeling and undeclared allergens. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat, soy, anchovy, and/or milk, run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

— Medprep Consulting Inc. Announces Voluntary Nationwide Recall Of All Lots Of All Compounded Products Due To Potential Mold Contamination -2

Tinton Falls, NJ., Med Prep Consulting, Inc. is voluntarily recalling all lots of all products compounded at its facility. The level of recall is to the user, that is, regional hospital pharmacies and related departments, and physicians office practices. The recall resulted from the pharmacy being notified by a Connecticut hospital, that it observed visible particulate contaminants in 50 ml bags of MAGNESIUM SULFATE 2GM IN DEXTROSE 5 Percent IN WATER, 50ML FOR INJECTION intravenous solution confirmed to be mold.

— New Chapter, Inc. Issues Voluntary Recall Undeclared soy identified in one lot of Probiotic Elderberry dietary supplement

New Chapter, Inc. is voluntarily recalling a limited number of packages of its 90 count Probiotic Elderberry dietary supplement because it may contain an undeclared allergen – soy. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

— Clinical Specialties Compounding Pharmacy Announces Voluntary Nationwide Recall of All lots of Sterile Products Repackaged and Distributed by Clinical Specialties Compounding Due to Lack of Sterility Assurance

Clinical Specialties is voluntarily recalling All Lots of All Sterile products repackaged and distributed by the pharmacy due to lack of sterility assurance. The recall of all sterile products is conducted in follow-up to concerns regarding practices at the site which cannot assure the sterility of the products. The expanded recall follows the firms initial recall of Avastin due to reports of five patients who have been diagnosed with serious eye infections associated with the use of the product.

— Daesang Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Peanuts in Mixed Soy Bean Paste (Sesame and Garlic)

March 19, 2013 – Daesang America Inc. One University Plaza, Suite 603, Hackensack, NJ 07601 is recalling its 500gram (17.64 Ounce) packages of Sesame and Garlic flavored Mixed Soy Bean Paste because they may contain undeclared peanuts. People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

— La Preferida, Inc. Issues A Voluntary Recall Of La Preferida Whole Pinto Beans 29 OZ. (Water & Salt)

La Preferida, Inc. is voluntarily recalling 4,734 cases (56,808 cans) of La Preferida Whole Pinto Beans 29 oz. (Water & Salt). Can Code: PINTO LP, BEST BY 01/03/2015, “Time” 3003. The manufacturer’s preliminary inspection indicates 420 cans may not have been fully processed, which could result in product contamination by spoilage organisms or by pathogens, which could lead to illness if consumed.

Birth Control and Bosses Don’t Mix : NWLC

	Support Birth Control without Co-pays



	Tell HHS you support a workable plan to make birth control coverage without co-pays available to women, regardless of where they work.

Something is wrong with this picture: you, your boss, your birth control.
The reality is birth control and bosses don’t mix. This isn’t a question, at least for you and me. But there are actually people who think that bosses should be able to make their employees’ personal medical decisions — over 50 bosses have even gone to court over it.
The health care law guarantees that women can get birth control covered with no co-pays or deductibles. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released a proposed rule whose goal is making sure this is a reality regardless of where a woman works, and the agency is asking people to comment on it.
Bosses who oppose this will be speaking out. We need you to speak out even louder in support of birth control without co-pays for women, regardless of where they work.

Send in your comments today and tell HHS you support a workable plan to make birth control coverage without co-pays available to women, no matter where they work.
When studies show that 99% of sexually active women use contraception, and that Catholic women use contraceptives at nearly the same rate as the general population, it’s shocking that some employers are trying to block access to birth control. Women must have access to no-cost, comprehensive birth control coverage without extra burdens or barriers, as promised in the health care law. So it’s up to us to ensure that the Administration’s plan gives women the ability to get seamless coverage of affordable birth control, no matter who their boss is.
Tell HHS that bosses shouldn’t stand in the way of a woman getting seamless access to birth control.

What Is the Sequester?

In just a matter of days, harmful automatic cuts — known as the sequester — take effect, threatening hundreds of thousands of jobs, and cutting vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and our men and women in uniform.

President Obama put forward a plan to avoid these cuts and reduce the deficit by cutting spending and closing tax loopholes. Now it’s up to Congress to act.
