Take our quiz: What century are they from? a message from Marissa Graciosa

History is repeating itself

Can you tell the difference?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! They say today everyone is a little bit Irish.

It wasn’t always like that, though. When the Irish first came to America they were met with persecution, ignorance and fear. They were denied jobs, accused of lawlessness and of destroying the United States. Immigration became a rallying point for the Know-Nothings, a political party dedicated to punishing immigrants.

Flash forward to today. Hispanic immigrants are facing the same accusations and the same injustices. History is repeating itself, right in front of us. In fact, it’s getting impossible to tell the difference between rhetoric from the historical Know-Nothings and today’s Republican Party.

Take the quiz: Can you tell the difference?   http://act.reformimmigrationforamerica.org/go/1190?akid=652.164689.coTnOf&t=6

See if you can tell the difference between the historical Know-Nothings and today’s modern ones. Then, take action and tell some of the House’s most extreme right wing restrictionist voices not to keep repeating history. We need constructive solutions, not repackaged racism and xenophobia.

Thank you,

Marissa Graciosa

warpy Wednesday &some News

Winter continues even though that groundhog said we would have an early spring. i guess that depends on what part of the U.S. you are in. It is windy, cold and  snowing here so let the bad driving commence.  Today is a good day to take a deep breath through the nose reach up to the sky and slowly release your breath slowly through your mouth and lower your arms …repeat as needed. It is also a day to mourn, definitely a moment to see what is going on in America right now and a time to fight.

Next week Congress will be back in session hopefully willing to act on behalf of all Americans and not just for their own agendas, good luck with that right. It is time for the Democratic Party to unite in solidarity on the floor of Congress for “We the People, challenge Republicans and call their bluffs to vote against their fellow Americans which they have been succeeding at until the recent uprisings in various states by Working Families. It is obvious Republican constituents fall into a few categories, some are complicit supporters of exclusion and discrimination, a few are too busy looking at that shiny thing the Republican Tea Party is waving while others are oblivious to reality. The reality being that life as we all know it as Americans is about to change with the worst impact being on women, kids and minorities with some belonging to public or private unions while all are apart of working families.  The fight to keep democracy intact is on and those of us that are on the side of families must not give up. In Solidarity

the Democratic Party is definitely trying to get Americans back on track and the Republicans who want more of the Bush era which if you were paying attention allowed Corporations to bet against us with all the Profits being hoarded by them and our 401K being stripped, stolen and or lost completely.

The question is will Republican constituents continue to prefer the status quo or see the opportunity to move into the 21st Century

You’re invited: Tony & Janina’s American Wedding

Be a part of their story

Have you heard the story about Tony & Janina? Their family was torn apart by our broken immigration system and their heartbreaking story has been captured by a powerful documentary film.

Tony & Janina’s story is just one of thousands that happen every day. More and more states are attempting to copycat Arizona’s racial profiling laws, while the House of Representatives has grown increasingly restrictionist and lawmakers attempt to take citizenship away from newborn babies.

We need to stand up and fight back, locally and nationally.

But where do we start? With you. In your homes and communities, with your friends and families, at your churches and schools. We want you to hold a screening of a special version of “Tony & Janina’s American Wedding” and invite your community. We’ll provide you with a special copy of the film, discussion questions and everything you’ll need to get your community involved.

Sign up to host a screening party in your neighborhood >> http://ri4a.org/

It’s simple. Just sign up to host, set the date and time of your party, and then start inviting your friends. We’ll provide you with everything you need to get the discussion underway – you just provide the space.

We need everyone in the fight. Host a party, share Tony & Janina’s story and get your friends and family involved!
