Download the DNC 2012 App!

In a continued effort to make the 2012 Democratic National Convention the most open and accessible convention in history, in partnership with the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) and with the generous support of AT&T, the Charlotte in 2012 Host Committee is excited to present the most technologically advanced way to be a part of a Convention through the release of the official convention mobile app for smartphones and tablets.

Called “DNC 2012,” the mobile app is part of both the Charlotte in 2012 Host Committee and the DNCC’s broad digital media efforts to make it possible for people to participate in this historic event both in person and virtually. At the touch of a finger, users can watch the convention via live-stream footage as well as navigate through Charlotte and convention venues via an interactive map. The app is available now for iOS and Android devices.

Making a legacy of possibility real

Catalyzed by the historic 2012 Democratic National Convention, the Charlotte community has undertaken significant efforts to show rather than just tell the world how we come together and problem solve. As a result, for more than a year, we have been working hard to create an enduring legacy of across four key areas: reducing childhood obesity, lifting the ambitions of young people by engaging them in putting the convention together, making our city more sustainable than any other convention city and promoting inclusive business practices. By the time the convention happens, we want you to see what we’ve done, not what we promise to do. Volunteers, partner organizations and supporters are working hard every day and showing that we make it possible to shape our future here in Charlotte and North Carolina. Learn more >>>

Learn more about Charlotte!

As people from all over the country funnel into Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention, it’s important we introduce them to our city. We decided to do this in two fun, yet informative ways:

Exploring Charlotte: Our Exploring Charlotte Series is a set of blog posts written by our outstanding high school student interns detailing the city they live in and letting readers know what to experience and where to eat and shop while in town. The blog posts also detail the history of each neighborhood, so you can not only see what the neighbors have to offer, but also how these communities are part of the American fabric as we gather to celebrate during the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Read more about Historic South End, NoDa, Trade & Tryon and Plaza-Midwood.

Hey Intern: The “Hey Intern” series is a set of blog posts/videos designed with a simple format: directing our interns to give our visitors a peek at what the Queen City has to offer. So far, they’ve been on the Carolina Thread Trail, The Green, NASCAR Hall of Fame and Discovery Place. They even made a cat video! We plan to feature several more places before and during the convention!

a message from Zach Silk

We really appreciate your support.

It has helped us lay a very, VERY solid foundation for the rest of this race to defend marriage equality, and approve R74 this fall — but November is still 82 days away.  And this will be a dogfight, for sure.

As we stare down Labor Day, the official start of the campaign season, it seemed the right time to update you on where we are and where we’re headed.

Watch this video now!

We’re ready for this fight, thanks to you. And we’re going to need to really buckle down in the final phase of this race to make sure that we’re ready, no matter what they throw at us.

Stopped and Frisked : NYC Councilman on NYPD

In May of 2010 New York City Councilman Jumaane Williams spoke out against the NYPD‘s”Stop and Frisk” policy and highlighted the prejudices of the system.

“If you have more melanin in your skin you are more likely to be stopped…we should be allowed to walk freely.” Councilman Williams

At this year’s Labor Day Parade in Brooklyn Jumaane Williams was inappropriately profiled and detained by the NYPD. Councilman Williams has written a special guest blog for us here at The Black Institute about the situation.

Read it and tell us what you think about how we can move forward towards change!

Happy Labor Day …Gregg Ross, Democracy for America

Happy Labor Day!

As we celebrate today, it’s important to keep in mind that Republicans are still waging an all-out war on working families across America.

Last month we won two big victories against anti-union Republican Senators in Wisconsin – and we are continuing to fight the Republican anti-union agenda state by state.

Show your solidarity with workers across the country. Sign up to get a free “Unions = Jobs” bumper sticker today.

Thanks for everything you do.

Fw: I ❤ Taxi Drivers. Who Do You ❤? AFL – CIO

Labor Day’s coming. Who do you ♥?
Is it the nurse who cared for you? Maybe the members of your own union or a relative’s union—steelworkers or teachers or pilots? Or, as we approach the 10th anniversary of September 11, is it the many first responders who rushed into burning buildings to save lives?Which workers do you heart? Let us—and the world—know.
Dear Carmen,On my very first business trip, I left my wallet in a New York taxi—with more than $200 in it. This was right after college, so that was a TON of money for me. And I thought it was gone for good. But then, he brought my wallet back. The taxi driver didn’t just call me. He braved rush hour traffic to bring back my wallet and didn’t charge me a dime.

I ♥ that taxi driver—and workers like him who go the extra mile for other people every day. And I just let the world know.

Who do you “heart”?

Tell us which workers you heart. Then, you can update your Facebook status through Labor Day and tweet about it (but you don’t have to use Facebook or Twitter to participate in our campaign).

Maybe it’s Wisconsin workers. They braved the bitter cold day after day, week after week, to fight for workers’ rights.

Maybe it’s coal miners. They risk their lungs and their lives every day to provide the power that keeps our country going.

Maybe it’s the plumber who got your wedding ring out of the drain. What a huge relief that must have been. I’ve heard in some places sanitation workers have even gotten wedding rings out of the sewer. Amazing!

How about the firefighter who got your kitten out of a tree—or saved your neighbor’s house?

Click here to take action. It takes about 15 seconds to let us know who you heart this Labor Day.

It’s been a tough year for America’s workers, and working men and women need some love.
So why not heart a worker or two or three? If enough of us let our friends and family know how important hardworking women and men are in our daily lives—and encourage our friends to do the same—we can really make this campaign take off and remind people what Labor Day is about: honoring work and workers.

In Solidarity,

Manny Herrmann
Online Mobilization Coordinator, AFL-CIO

P.S. Please take action and tell us who you heart on Labor Day. Then forward our message to your friends and family so they can take action, too.

P.P.S. See a weird symbol in this message, like a box? It’s supposed to be a heart symbol, but for a very small percentage of users, it appears as something else.
