R74

$3 million.

That’s how much money the opponents of the freedom to marry are raising to repeal marriage equality in Washington, and fight it in other states. And the National Organization for Marriage, or NOM, has quite a history of using that money to scare and mislead voters about what the freedom to marry means.

And, believe me — NOM is just beginning to drown Washington with campaign cash. Just last night, we learned that they’d transferred ANOTHER $400,000 into Washington.

Please click here to contribute $3 to fight these ads now — if we wait until they’re on the air in Washington, it’ll be too late.

After I emailed you about NOM’s campaign to — and I quote — “protect marriage from Barack Obama and his wealthy homosexual lobbyists”, some of our supporters suggested that I tell you exactly what these $3 million dollars in anonymous donations are going to buy.

In 2008, NOM ran an ad called “Princess” which featured a young girl telling her mom “what she learned in school today” — which was that “A prince can marry a prince, and I can marry a princess!” You know the argument by now: that somehow, allowing all loving couples to marry will upend our schools and threaten religious freedom.  It was a lie then and it’s a lie now.

Donate now!

These are the kind of false attacks that we KNOW are coming.

We know, because the same organization, it’s same shadowy anonymous donors, and the same spin doctors that put together this ad are bankrolling — and leading — our opposition in Washington.

It worked in California — but we can stop them in Washington, if you click here to contribute $3 right now.

Sorry to pollute your inbox with this, but you deserve to know.

General Mills Gets Huge Outpouring of Support for Marriage Equality Stance – HRC.org

Nearly 80k Thank General Mills for Marriage Equality Support

General Mills made headlines last month when the company announced its opposition to the discriminatory ballot measure in Minnesota that would ban committed, loving same-sex couples from marrying.

The National Organization for Marriage was, of course, not pleased – and promptly launched an ill-conceived campaign calling on consumers to boycott the iconic company for pushing a “radical social agenda.” Since the campaign’s inception, about 20,000 people have signed on.

HRC later launched an action thanking General Mills for supporting marriage equality – that action has nearly 80,000 supporters to date; four times the number of NOM supporters. Join those thanking General Mills and sign your name now.

Please, add your name to our petition. We’re sending a powerful message to General Mills that consumers back companies that support marriage equality. Just last week, Fortune 500 company Thomson Reuter also voiced its support for equality and came out against the amendment.

HRC is a proud supporter of the coalition, Minnesotans United for All Families, working to defeat the amendment banning same-sex marriage in the state.  HRC has set up a special fund – HRC Minnesota Family Freedom PAC – to direct 100 percent of your contribution to defeat the anti-marriage constitutional amendment in Minnesota.

By now, you’ve probably seen the reports that our opponents are disorganized, and not collecting many signatures or much money to overturn marriage equality in Washington State. Don’t believe the hype – not even for one second.

They only need 120,577 valid signatures to place Referendum 74 on the November ballot, and we expect them to easily succeed. In fact, the opposition – led by the National Organization for Marriage – has pledged $1,000,000 to ensure this happens.

Below are two things you can do this month to help protect marriage in Washington State.

Pledge to Approve Referendum 74

Take the Pledge to Approve Referendum 74
and protect marriage equality in Washington State this November 6. As we continue to ramp up our operations in the state, we’re going to need all hands on deck to ensure that our efforts are successful. Your pledge will help HRC and Washington United for Marriage identify hundreds of thousands of supporters needed to win.

Volunteer to Approve Referendum 74

To defend marriage equality in Washington State, we need you to volunteer with our efforts to Approve R-74. While the election may not be until November 6th, the hard work of identifying supporters has begun and must continue to grow over the next seven months. We need to identify 1.5 million voters to cast their ballots in our favor – and we need your help to do it.

Shocking moment at GOP debate — fight back!

When audience members booed an openly gay soldier at last month’s GOP presidential debate, my heart dropped to my feet.

It was offensive enough that the audience would jeer one of our service members. But that none of the presidential hopefuls on stage stood up for this brave young man? Unconscionable.

And they say they want to be Commander-in-Chief.

These candidates lend a megaphone to a shared platform of hateful attacks on equality. We see them every day from leaders of the religious right all the way down to a New Jersey schoolteacher’s ugly Facebook tirade earlier this month. But there’s no slur too small for us to call out – and no lie too large for us to tear down.

And that’s where you come in, Carmen. You and I and all straight allies can stand up to these right-wing attacks and create a safer world for the LGBT community. Help us fight back by becoming a first-time HRC member before MIDNIGHT TOMORROW.

With less than 48 hours left to our deadline, we’re still 142 new members short of our goal – and we need your support now. Don’t wait any longer – please join today.

There’s a groundswell of support for equality lighting up our country, but dangerous, hateful talking points are still far too commonplace. GOP contenders are pledging to reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and fight for a constitutional ban on marriage equality.

Every statement from the National Organization for Marriage and every speech by the head of the American Family Association drips in anti-LGBT anger – from calling equality supporters “anti-marriage goons”  to labeling homosexuality a “threat to public health.”

Hurtful, bigoted words like these get beamed into living rooms across the country and plastered across Facebook.

School administrators, teachers, and students take them as license to discriminate and to bully. Athletes take them as a sign that it’s okay to use anti-gay slurs. And Republican leaders in the House of Representatives use them as reasoning behind their multi-million dollar, taxpayer-funded court case in support of the Defense of Marriage Act. We can put an end to the hate, but not without your help. Will you fight back with us now?

We want you with us. Become an HRC member today to help defend our victories and build a world free of right-wing discrimination.

Time and time again, HRC has relied on a simple belief: equality is a right that should be afforded to all. It’s why you and I are part of this cause – and it’s what propels us through victories and setbacks. Thank you for everything you do to support this simple yet profound purpose.

For our future,

NOM Exposed: A Facebook Swarm -from Kevin Nix

A door just opened, one that allows all of us to further expose and challenge the homophobia of the National Organization for Marriage.

You may have heard about Louis Marinelli, NOM’s online strategist who recently resigned because he supports marriage equality. He took all of the organization’s 290,000 Facebook fans with him. They’ve just begun to rebuild a Facebook fan base from scratch.

Here’s where you come in. If everyone on this list – after holding your nose – friended NOM, pro-equality supporters would outnumber NOM’s current anti-equality supporters 6 to 1.

But you know what would really make an impact? Leave a comment on NOM’s Facebook posts. Let’s saturate their page with positive, fact-based pro-equality messages. Some suggestions:

-Marriage for gays and lesbians will do nothing to religious freedom. Houses of worship will continue to decide whether they want to recognize gay marriages, or not. We’re talking about committed gay and lesbian couples going down to city hall to get married.

-Gay couples want to make the public commitment of marriage – and be held accountable for that commitment .

-Credible polls show a majority of American Catholics actually support marriage for gay and lesbian couples. People in the pews do not necessarily agree with the Catholic hierarchy.

You can get more ideas for comments in our “Fact” section of NOMExposed.org. But – please – don’t leave personal, ad hominem attacks. Don’t let them drag you into the gutter. No tit for tat. That gets us nowhere. We need elevated, positive conversation.

One last thing. The fight for marriage in New York is heating up. While HRC and other LGBT groups just launched a new campaign in New York. NOM has too and is trying to mobilize its people. If you live in New York State, become a NY NOMWatcher. We need more eyes and ears on the ground and online.

As always, thanks for your interest and engagement.
