On September 20th, join the Black Institute in educating New Yorker’sabout Walmart’s lies and building support for our local Walmart FreeNYC Campaign at the “No More Lies” Forum.

Walmart’s urban strategy is to buy and bully its way into our cities with a massive million-dollar ad campaign making promises to communities and associates. Community members will be sharing the story of broken promises in cities across the country where Walmart is expanding and what organizing efforts are happening to protect workers and communities in our cities.

This forum is an opportunity for all of us – community, faith,labor, students, low wage workers, elected officials and every day NewYorkers to learn about Walmart’s broken promises in urban markets and to engage in the NYC local campaign. Click for More Info

Reporters talked to a few people waiting to get into the Mitt Romney fundraiser at the Koch estate in the Hamptons over the weekend.

Here’s what one of them had to say:

“A New York City donor a few cars back, who also would not give her name, said Romney needed to do a better job connecting. ‘I don’t think the common person is getting it,’ she said from the passenger seat of a Range Rover stamped with East Hampton beach permits. …

‘We’ve got the message,’ she added. ‘But my college kid, the baby sitters, the nails ladies — everybody who’s got the right to vote — they don’t understand what’s going on. I just think if you’re lower income — one, you’re not as educated, two, they don’t understand how it works, they don’t understand how the systems work, they don’t understand the impact.”‘

Whenever you hear about Romney’s fundraising advantage, I want you to remember this quote — because this is the kind of person making huge contributions to give him that advantage. If you do nothing, that’s who gets to win.

This isn’t just about the kind of people supporting Mitt Romney. This is also about who benefits from a Romney presidency: Millionaires and billionaires would get a $250,000 tax cut, from a plan costing $5 trillion, while Wall Street would be allowed to write its own rules.

That’s Romney’s plan — a return to Bush-era policies. It’s hard to forget how that ended.

Postponed – July Save Our African American Treasures Program in New York City

The museum regrets to announce the postponement of the July 2012 Save Our African American Treasures program scheduled at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York City.

Discussion is underway to establish a new date. Once the date has been confirmed, we will post it on our website at www.nmaahc.si.edu under Programs.

We look forward to bringing Save Our African American Treasures to New York City soon.

Dear friends across the US,

After being “stopped and frisked” by the NYPD more times than he can count, Avaaz member Tyquan started a petition calling on Mayor Bloomberg to end the racially charged policy. Stand with Tyquan and the over 200,000 people stopped this year alone – sign the petition now:

Tyquan, a recent high school graduate and Avaaz member from Brooklyn, has been stopped, handcuffed, and violently thrown to the ground by NYC police more times than he can count, often with no explanation. Now he’s started a petition asking Mayor Bloomberg to end the police “stop and frisk” policy that is fueling this harassment.
Crime is at a record low, but the practice of “stopping and frisking” primarily black and Latino New Yorkers has exploded by 600% in the last decade. NYC’s Public Advocate recently called for a halt to “stop and frisk” and now a Federal Judge has called the policy a broad abuse of fundamental constitutional rights, allowing a massive class action lawsuit against the city.
But the Mayor has dug in his heels, refusing to fold in spite of the legal ruling. Massive public opinion is the only thing that can end this police policy for good. Let’s stand with Tyquan and bring a national call for justice to Mayor Bloomberg’s front door:

Tyquan’s story is hardly unique, in fact, it’s standard operating procedure for the NYPD who have stopped and frisked over 200,000 people just like Tyquan this year alone. Worse, the stops are almost completely arbitrary. Officers cited vague sounding justifications for over half the stops made last year, including “furtive movements” and “inappropriate attire off season.” There’s also no evidence the policy is cutting down on crime – in over 90% of these stops the NYPD makes no arrests, or even issues a ticket. And white men accounted for only 4% of those stops last year.
If enough of us stand with Tyquan we can show Mayor Bloomberg that a growing national outcry demands better of him – and New York.
